Champions in Action helps address critical needs in local
communities by providing financial, media, promotional
and volunteer support, and executive mentoring to small,
lesser-known nonprofit organizations.
The program is in its 14th year and is activated in 5
markets (EPA, WPA, RI, MA & NH) in conjunction with
local media partners.
In 2016, Citizens awarded a total of $350,000 to 10
organizations in two categories:
• Workforce Development
• Strengthening Communities thru Collective Impact

Credo Week in Our Communities
During our annual Credo Week, the bank celebrates
our customers, colleagues, and communities. One way
we bring our Credo to life is through colleague
volunteerism:

More than 220,000 people will benefit from
services provided by the financial literacy
programs funded. During the month of April alone,
colleague volunteers taught 88 workshops,
reaching more than 4K consumers.
During Financial Literacy Month we announced our
annual Citizens Helping Citizens Manage Money
commitment. This year we:
In September, we leveraged Hunger Action Month to
highlight Citizens Helping Citizens Fight Hunger.
• Social Media campaign to raise awareness about
hunger and encouraged followers to join us in
fighting hunger in their communities
• State presidents authored Op-Eds on hunger that
ran in local papers across the footprint
• In MA, we announced $370K in contributions to
local organizations to combat hunger, highlighted
by a $200K contribution to the Greater Boston
Food Bank to fund 2 food delivery trucks
• Colleague volunteers across the footprint helped at
local food pantries and food banks
• Footprint-wide food drive in our facilities collected
15K non-perishable items for local food programs

Citizens Bank 5K Summer Fun Run
• Unique family-oriented road race and festival
featured live music, street performers and
children's activities

State President Lisa Maass announced Citizens’
funding of a new 26-foot refrigerated truck that
will help the Connecticut Food Bank bring food to
communities across its service areas, reaching an
average of 6 community partners daily with
deliveries of fresh, nutritious food.

Boston Medical Center Mayo Bowl
Citizens was presenting co-sponsor of the 7th annual
Mayo Bowl, hosted by former New England Patriots
Pro Bowl linebacker Jerod Mayo. The event
benefitted NFP bank client Boston Medical Center.
A dozen Middle Market & Professionals Banking
clients were treated to a fun and exclusive evening
of bowling on 1 of 3 Citizens teams, each featuring a
celebrity teammate, to compete for unique prizes.

at the Belle Isle Grand Prix

New York & New Hampshire
FoodLink (NY)
Cans of Nothing that double as a coin bank were
purchased for $5.00 from retailers across New
Hampshire, generously filled and returned with
donations. The “Nothing” empty can symbolizes
what thousands of NH residents have to eat each
day.
• 4th year as underwriter of The Nothing
Campaign, an awareness campaign that raises
funds to alleviate hunger
• Each can replaces the “nothing” on
neighbors’ tables with 60 nourishing meals
• State president Joe Carelli announced results
- $85,000+ raised, provided 170,000 meals
to the one in 9 NH residents affected by
hunger

Barbara Cottam provided remarks to a crowd

40th annual summer concert. Citizens hosted a
pre-event Cocktail Party with VIP seating in an
exclusive area right in front of the stage.

colleagues attended
• Ten retail colleagues generated 150 leads
with new on-site iPads

Fifty colleague volunteers helped set up

Food Bank.
Striking Out Hunger – August
Citizens hosted a BBQ at the Pawtucket Red Sox
with 200+ customers and guests, including 60+
community partners. Marc Paulhus and Barbara
Cottam presented a check to the RI Community Food
Bank for $75,000 from the Striking Out Hunger
program. This is the 10th year of a partnership with
the PawSox that has raised $725,000 for the Food
Bank.
