On July 30, Lana Faber, who served as youth minister at the St. Cloud Children’s Home for 30 years, and Rick Rentz, a staff member for 38 years, presented the sisters with the crib scene that was a fi xture at the Children’s Home for decades. We assembled in the Gathering Space and listened to Lana tell a couple stories about the crèche’s signifi cance at the Children’s Home. Lana spoke fondly of Sister Mary Ida Bursch who gave strict instructions on the care and storage of the manger and fi gurines. “Each fi gure had to be carried individually. Sister Ida did not want anyone to carry down the storage boxes, fearing that they would fall on the stairs and many of the pieces could be broken,” Lana recalled. “Every year she’d arrange the crib scene during the fi rst week of Advent, and she was adamant that Baby Jesus would not be placed in the manger before Christmas Eve, which she did herself.”

2 COMMUNITY NEWS • AUGUST 28, 2019 FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA

One of my Home Care parishioners at St. Joseph Church in Waite Park is Estelle, a 92-year-old lady who is cared for in her home. Recently her son, Dennis Memken, gave a donation of $500 to our local community to purchase a new lawn mower. The family members remember our Franciscan Community as teachers at St. Joseph’s grade School in Waite Park. Dennis sent the following message with the donation check: “It just occurred to me that a $500 donation to the Franciscan Sisters is a good way to recognize that in the 1950’s, when I went to St. Joseph’s School in Waite Park, there were 500 students in the school. Only two classes of 35 students were taught by lay teachers. All the rest were taught by the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. This donation is just a little payback for all their dedication and faithful teaching here at St. Joseph’s School. We former students remember and give thanks to the Franciscan Sisters for their many years of presence and ministry here at our parish. As grade school students, you were the best sister teachers we knew!”

FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA COMMUNITY NEWS • AUGUST 28, 2019 3

Per a recommendation by the Liturgy Committee, Leadership has endorsed an ecumenical prayer time Wednesdays, 10:30-11 a.m. beginning September 4. This is an eff ort to provide a concrete, communal action to peacefully counter all the hatred, bad and confl icting news, frightening policies, on and on in our government, world, climate, etc. Sisters, associates, employees, guests, visitors, ALL are invited to come to the chapel to pray quietly for some or all of this time. Though there will be no formal service, a Peace Prayerbook will be available if anyone wishes an aid to prayer. Please feel free to invite interested persons to join in prayer every Wednesday from 10:30-11 a.m. (or at another time of their choosing) for the needs of the world, our nation, and all faith denominations:

• wherever justice and peace/climate and creation/resources and distribution of goods are endangered.

• wherever violence and racism are normalized.• wherever policies that seek to designate certain peoples as “other” rather than sister and

brother are cause for alarm and concern. It is our hope that the reality of being joined in prayer every Wednesday will not only be cause for hope, but will, to some degree, alleviate the feelings of isolation and futility (“What can one person do?”) many experience today.

All are invited to special Wednesday time of prayerSisters Maurita Bernet, Julien Dirkes, LaVonne Schackmann and Bea Britz, Judy Virnig and Joan Wingert, FSLF Liturgy Team

Anna Taylor, former Franciscan Community Volunteer and current Franciscan Associate, joined the resident community of Sisters Jan Kilian, Karen Niedzielski and Michelle L'Allier at Welcoming House this summer. She is living with us in intentional community as she discerns her next steps, and shares in the work of hospitality as we receive new volunteers and visitors to the house. Anna brings many gifts as she continues to work at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. She serves as a Eucharistic Minister at the Motherhouse about once a month and will participate in community activities as she is able. Join us in welcoming Anna!

A welcome addition to Welcoming House!Sisters Jan Kilian, Karen Niedzielski and Michelle L’Allier

4 COMMUNITY NEWS • AUGUST 28, 2019 FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA

How many people does it take to prepare for a new event? It took a variety of sisters and staff who helped prepare for and host seven young women, as well as Fathers Doug Liebsch and Scott Pogatchnik. Sponsored by the St. Cloud Diocesan Vocations Offi ce, young women 16 and older were invited to an overnight adventure of meeting fi ve religious communities, of which the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls were the fi rst stop. Three of the participants have been to Girls Camps at the Motherhouse or have taken lessons at the Francis Music Center; the other four were fi rst-time visitors. They enjoyed breakfast after their travel to Little Falls, and then went on a tour of the Motherhouse. Followed by time of prayer and closing conversation in the chapel, they continued their journey with information about Saints Francis and Clare, as well as the Franciscan Sisters. Thanks to all who were involved in the hospitality of receiving the group. Our visitors appreciated their time at the Motherhouse!

On Tuesday, August 13, the Music Center held a special event for interested string students and the larger community. Thanks to another successful grant written by Robyn Gray to the Five Wings Arts Council, we hosted a performing duo known as The OK Factor. Cellist Olivia Diercks and violinist Karla Colahan are classically trained but with a fresh, crossover style that blends several genres of music. They came to Little Falls for the day to play an outdoor morning concert at The Shoppes of Little Falls, then conducted an afternoon workshop with 17 St. Francis string students who signed up in advance. The day culminated in a 7 p.m. free concert for the community, held in Sacred Heart Chapel. It was delightful. Thanks to all who were involved in planning and hosting.
