When I was an undergraduate, I took full advantage of the campus infirmary on the few occasions I was ill. However, when one of my wisdom teeth decided it was

time to exit my mouth, I found out very quickly that the infirmary did not offer dental services. So, I located a dentist and discovered how it feels to have no insurance. Fortunately, my part-time job enabled me to pay the bill over the course of four months. Unfortunately, during that time I had less money for food and clothing...and forget about anything extra.

Today, I would offer that most of us cannot imagine struggling to maintain good dental and oral health. The fact remains that a significant number of families lack the resources to do just that. This is where Dentistry From The Heart steps in and assists willing practitioners in the planning and execution of local “events”, the purpose of which is to provide basic services to those in need without charge. Susan and I applaud both the vision of “DFTH” and the generosity of every dentist who has staged an event. It is our hope that you, the reader, might decide to direct some of your charitable giving to “DFTH”, as well as encourage your dentist to get involved.

Our advertisers share our enthusiasm for this worthy organization. They also represent the best their profession has to offer. Please patronize them and thank them for their support.

from the executive editor

The winter doldrums are especially evident this year. The ever-increasing snowfall and frigid cold have engendered many a dreary mood even in the most cheerful of souls. Nonetheless, bright spots abound. How it warmed

my heart to see neighbors helping neighbors shoveling out from under a foot of snow. The laughter of children building snowmen and sledding down hills prompted a smile as I considered the value of simple pleasures. While teachers (like me) bemoaned the loss of continuity and class time, students rejoiced with the news that schools would be closed yet again.

Still, the rare and coveted sunny day, accompanied by an above-freezing temperature, is a welcomed harbinger of impending spring. Even Valentine’s Day, though diminished by the weather in many areas, stands as a reminder that love reigns supreme.

This issue of Community Magazine highlights that love and community spirit by featuring Dentistry From The Heart, an organization providing free dental services to those unable to afford them. Most of us take our dental health for granted. Imagine the discomfort so many suffer due to lack of resources. Please consider giving of your time and/or treasure to this most worthy charity and know that our advertisers support it as well. Do not forget to thank them with your patronage.

A ccording to Frontline,

“more than 100 million Americans don’t go to the dentist because they can’t afford it. Instead, they end up broke, in severe pain and struggling to get by. Sometimes they even die.”

In addition, adults often sacrifice their own dental health for that of their children. The number of adults going without dental care grew significantly during the recent economic downturn. Although the economy is improving, dental care still remains a luxury item for some.

A registered non-profit organization, Dentistry From The Heart, offers a solution. Providing free dental services to those in need, the organization operates with a lean staff of two at their Tampa, Florida headquarters. Supported by a network of volunteer dental practices across the United States, Canada, and now internationally, for the many patients who benefit from the organization’s 200 plus events, Dentistry From The Heart does more than repair a smile—it inspires confidence.

How it started Founded in Tampa, Florida, in 2001 by Dr. Vincent Monticciolo, Dentistry From The Heart was his way of giving back to the community and providing aid to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. In the past eleven years, Dentistry From The Heart events have contributed more than $8 million in free dentistry and helped more than 76,000 patients across North America. From his original free dentistry event, Dentistry From The Heart is now represented in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia and Puerto Rico.

Millions of Americans can’t afford dental care

According to a report by the Institute of Medicine (OIM), millions of Americans are not getting the dental care they require. While, generally speaking, oral health has improved in the United States, that’s not the case for everyone. When it comes to dental care, seniors receiving Medicare, minorities and low-income families suffer the most. Why? They just can’t afford it. People who have dental coverage are much more likely to see a dentist. In fact, according to the report, those who do not have dental insurance are almost two-thirds less likely to have visited a dentist within the past year, compared to those with private coverage. According to the report, about 130 million Americans lack private dental coverage, including:

• 22%ofchildrenbetweentheagesof1 and 17

• 40%ofadultsbetween21and64• 70%ofseniorsaged65andolder How Dentistry From the Heart WorksAccording to Brian Carlsen, Director of Dentistry From The Heart, “This is a very unique charity in that we help those in need as well as the dentists that serve them.” This year, Dentistry From The Heart doubled in size, catching on almost by accident. Brian and one associate strive to remain dedicated to the cause rather than to bureaucracy. To make it work, each dental practice makes a small donation to the charity, which then provides legal, marketing, and administrative support to help the dentist host an event in their area.

“Helping to expand this charity has been the most gratifying experience of my entire life. I’m fiercely proud of what we do. Dentistry has the unique ability to eliminate terrible suffering in just moments. I actually studied dentistry, but had to stop because of an illness. Today, I help treat more patients that I could have imagined as a sole dental practitioner.”

You may have to wait in line if you or someone you know can’t afford dental

treatment, you are in luck. Dentistry From TheHearthelps25-30,000peopleeveryyear, in just about every state, except Hawaii. In 2013, the charity held 213 events, typically serving 100 people at every event.

But, you may have to wait in line. Arriving early for a Dentistry From The Heart event is recommended. At some events, potential patients have even been known to camp out According to the Bradford West Gwillimbury Times, “By 6 a.m. on May 27, patients were already lined up in the entrance to 76 Holland St. West, where Bradford Family Dentistry has its offices. They were there to participate in Dentistry From The Heart – an event that provides basic cleanings, fillings or extractions, free of charge. It was the first time that Dr. Jesse Chai and his team at Bradford Family Dentistry have participated in Dentistry From The Heart.”

Who’s eligible for treatment at Dentistry From The Heart?

Brian Carlsen, Director, is proud to say, “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. Even if you’re from Mars, if you are over 18 and need dental services, we won’t turn you away.” While Dentistry From The Heart members provide free dental care services for adults 18+, Give Kids a Smile, another national dental nonprofit, provides children 18 and under with free dental care during the month of February. Please visit their website at http://www.gkas.org if you would like more information.

Dentistry From The Heart event provides only free extractions, fillings and cleanings. Given t he influx of what can be hundreds of individuals on a given day, only these three procedures are possible.

These events are happening year round in 48statesandCanada.Theyareconstantlyadding new events to the online event calendar. One’s ability to attend is based upon your proximity to one of the events listed. Visit the events page at: www.

Dentistry From The Heart events are not able to provide for all manner of dental care services, such as dentures. However, they recommend that patients requiring additional treatment explore contact with regional free clinics in their area. Patients can usually get a list of these from their county offices. Another course of action is to contact dental schools in your state.

The benefits are exponentialIt’s obvious that Dentistry From The Heart benefits both the patients and provides visibility to dental practices. But, the benefits are exponential. Brian Carlsen notes, “I have to admit that I enjoy attending these events and seeing just how happy and grateful the patients are. I try to get a spot by the door, because you’ll often get free hugs!” On top of that, these events help to improve the morale of dental employees. The staff at participating dental offices often feels a profound sense of satisfaction in helping people who really need it. Many say they look forward to these events every year.

Hosting a Dentistry From The Heart event

Dentistry From the Heart invites dental practices in all parts of the United States and Canada to join something big! There are numerous reasons why any practice should host an event.

In addition to the obvious benefits such service provides those who do not have
