It seems amazing that we are at the end of another school year. It has flown past once again. As we say goodbye to Year 11 students, we are preparing to meet our new Year 7s, as they transition from their primary schools to the world of secondary education. We have also said a sad goodbye to two of our longest serving staff members, Angie and Lyn.

This issue of Community Links has a particular focus on our students both present and past. It is always great to hear how our former students are getting on in their studies and careers and we have great news on both fronts from our local colleges about the ongoing successes of our alumni.

Elsewhere, we have fantastic news to share about our Year 11 Football Team and a group of our students that have been honoured at the recent Mayor of Eastleigh Volunteer Awards. Our Year 9 students have been out and about with their German Exchange friends and also getting to grips with creating drama performances for a live audience. There are also the usual regular features from our feeder schools and neighbourhood police, as well as all the news and offers from our Community Sports and Fitness team.

With best wishes for an enjoyable, and hopefully sunny, summer.

We are always looking for extra-curriculum activities

to enhance learning in the college and a new initiative

this year has been started by Ms Pancott in the Modern

Foreign Languages Department. Taking place on a

Thursday break time, the Foreign Film Club started

in September. A large group (on average 15) have

been coming every week to watch a film in German

as they eat their lunch. All of them are eager for this

to continue into Year 8.

The students were all given the choice of films to

watch and they voted for each one. Given the length

of break, it’s taken a while to get through the films.

Those watched were: Nachts im Museum (A Night at

the Museum), Gregs Tagebuch (A Diary of a Wimpy

Kid), Die Eiskönigin (Frozen) and Evan Allmächtig

(Evan Almighty).

Foreign Film Club “I love foreign film club because I get to spend time with my friends whilst enjoying a new experience. I have never watched a film in a different language and I really love it. Sometimes I can pick up a few extra German words too!” - Millie

“I love foreign film club because it is nice to know that the German I am learning in lessons can be applied to the films we watch. Sometimes I can work out what they are saying just by recognising other words. I also love learning new words. I hope it continues next year!” - Emily

“I really like foreign film club because I really enjoy learning words which we don’t learn in lessons. It is really fun as you can actually understand the words. I hope it continues next year!” - Brandon

...continued from front cover

When the exchange was first announced, many students leapt at the opportunity to take part and were soon linked up with their German partners. The excitement for the exchange was reciprocated by the German students and everyone looked forward to meeting up.

The German students arrived on a typically drizzly British day! There was a rush of excitement as Wyvern students greeted their exchange partner with a hug or a handshake. The first evening was fantastic; an opportunity for everyone to really get to know each other.

On the first day, the German students embarked on a trip to London. Their whistle-stop tour included: visiting the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, going on a river boat across the city, and shopping at Camden market. They very much enjoyed the day and seeing the most historic parts of the city. The following day provided an opportunity for both sets of students to spend time together in an action-packed day at Marwell Activity Park. Activities included canoeing, kayaking and raft-building, as well as climbing, completing an obstacle course, and archery. Both German and English students loved the day, with activities that not only pushed people out of their comfort zones but that were also fun.

Over the weekend, many Wyvern students took their German partners to either Bournemouth or

Southsea to enjoy the sea air; something many of them have never experienced, making it an even more memorable trip. Others did activities such as rock climbing, zip-lining or bowling. For some, there was even the chance to experience football in another country at Southampton’s final game of the season.

Monday began with a visit to Wyvern for the German students. Wyvern students took their partner to two lessons before the visitors had a tour. Many German students felt involved in the lessons and complimented the amazing facilities of the College. In the afternoon, the German students had some free time in Salisbury to visit the cathedral and go shopping. As there are many stores exclusive to England, this was a great opportunity to buy something a bit different. On the final day, the German students travelled to Portsmouth, where they went shopping, visited Southsea beach, played in the amusement arcades and climbed the Spinnaker Tower.

It was then time to say goodbye. The final journey to school was filled with conversation about the fantastic memories created, but also inevitable sadness about them leaving England. However, this is not the last time that we will see them, as the second leg of the exchange where Wyvern students travel to Germany is only 3 weeks away!

At the end of May, friends and family were welcomed to the Drama Studio at Wyvern

College to see the Year 9 Showcase Performances. The

Drama students had been working hard to develop and

rehearse a range of scripts over several weeks as preparation for the C3 Performance Exam

that they will undertake in Year 11. This event provided an invaluable opportunity for them to experience what it is

like to perform in front of a live audience, as well as the chance

to show off all their hard work.

Each group had to choose one from a list of scripts and

then adapt and rehearse them. They needed to provide

all the technical aspects as well – lighting, staging, sound,

make up and costume. They certainly didn’t flinch from

selecting challenging and hard hitting pieces: ‘Josephine’

(a docudrama based on the events of 9/11), ‘Arbeit

Macht Frei’ (about the journey of Jewish prisoners to the concentration camps), the Disappeared (about those

that went missing in Argentina under the Junta), ‘The Tree’ (a fable with real relevance to the

environmental issues facing the present world) and ‘The

Government Inspector’ (a very funny political farce brought

right up to date to reflect current events). What was striking is

how many other curriculum subjects were touched on in

preparing for the performances – History, Geography, English,

Environmental Science.

It was a moving, funny and thoughtful evening, enjoyed

by both students and the audience. Well done to all those

who took part!

As stated in Wyvern’s prospectus, the College seeks to serve its community

through charity and public service. Many students give their time both in and outside College to support a vast array of causes,

clubs and community activity.

The College was delighted that five students were award winners at the recent Mayor of

Eastleigh Volunteer Awards and between them, they demonstrated the range of help

that the student body gives to others:Laurel – gold award winner who has been helping young children at the Poseidon Boxing Club for over three years. A promising boxer herself, she would like to go on and develop a career as a coach.

James – gold award winner who has given an amazing 229 hours of his time to various community organisations over the past year, including his church and the scouts.

Daniel – gold award runner up who has been volunteering at Fair Oak Junior School Code Club for three years and he is also a regular parkrun volunteer on Saturday mornings.

Isobel – gold award runner up who has given over 50 hours as Front of House at the Eastleigh Museum, originally as part of her Duke of Edinburgh course and then carrying on after its completion.

James – gold award runner up who has been volunteering at West End Youth Club, which he himself attended, for the past year helping with the activities for 8 and 9 year olds.

Congratulations to them all. They can be rightly proud of their awards, which recognise their willingness to give of their time to improve life for others.

Working alongside Wyvern’s fantastic teaching staff are many super support staff. Just before

half-term, the College said farewell to two of its longest serving

support staff: Angie Broomfield who had worked in the College

kitchen for over 20 years and Lyn Lyons who had been a cleaner for

14 years.

A big thank you to Angie and Lyn for their contribution to the College and best wishes for the future from all the college community – we will

11Year 8 Enjoy Supreme Court and Parliament Visit

At the end of April, 54 Year 8 students and accompanying staff made

an early start for the annual trip to the Supreme Court and Parliament

in London.

On arrival, the party was split in two with one group going for a

walking tour around Downing Street, Horse Guards’ Parade, and

Whitehall, whilst the other group was taken into one of the chambers

of the Supreme Court where students were told about the role of the

highest level of court in the United Kingdom. In this court, government

laws are overseen and individual appeal cases considered where

there is the potential for a change in our law. The two groups then

swapped over before taking lunch in St James’ Park.

After lunch it was onto the Houses of Parliament, where the group

divided again to take turns in experiencing a sitting in both the House

of Lords and the House of Commons. Afterwards the groups went

back to the Education Centre where they took part in workshops on

voting and campaign techniques. To round the visit off, Mims Davies,

local MP and Sports Minister, came along to meet and talk to the

students about life as an MP.

It was a really full and interesting day, with the coach getting back to

Wyvern at about 7pm. This is always a popular trip but the question

is – where will it be heading in a few years’ time when parliament

relocates during the Palace of Westminster renovations? Watch this

space!

Oxbridge BoundThere is very exciting news regarding former students Becky, Vedanshu and Kiera, who have all been successful in their Oxbridge applications. Becky and Ved have received conditional offers from the University of Cambridge to study Natural Sciences and Kiera a conditional offer from the University of Cambridge to study Geography. They are part of the group of 62 students from Peter Symonds College who have been successful in their Oxbridge applications this year.

Peter Symonds and Wyvern are rightfully proud of their success, as demand for these places gets ever more competitive. The quantity of offers amongst Peter Symonds’ students is exceptional but they are also very much aware that much of the credit should go to the students’ previous schools.

Whilst at Wyvern, all three of these students were taken on the Year 10 Oxford University Taster, organised by Careers Leader Katie Bruce – a visit designed to help raise aspirations amongst our students. This news proves that it was, indeed, an inspiring day.

Wyvern College is delighted to share the following story about former student Emily Sergeant, who studies Travel and Tourism Level 3 at Eastleigh College. Thanks to Eastleigh College for providing this article which was published in their May 2019 Newsletter:

Emily left Wyvern College in 2017 and she was determined to follow her dream and work as a cabin crew member. She had looked at other colleges and their offer, however with the course content being exactly what she wanted, some great feedback from friends and family, a timetable that suited her work life balance, and teachers that had inspired her at interview stage, she chose to study at Eastleigh College.

Emily shared that her day to day life at Eastleigh College has been varied and interesting learning various skills, from health and safety, cabin crew units, role playing in a mock aircraft classroom to practice interviews. Along with her group, she visited Barcelona for a week long adventure and learning task, which she says was a huge highlight.

On the Travel and Tourism Course, Emily says the teachers not only taught them about the various units of the course but also gave them encouragement and support to prepare for their next steps into employment. Her advice to anyone looking to join this course is to ensure you work hard to get your dream job. Before Eastleigh College although she knew she wanted to be cabin crew, she never dreamed she would secure her dream job at British Airways. She focused on what she was taught and used the skills learnt to build her confidence and prepare her for this role. Well done Emily from all staff and students at Eastleigh College.

Anyone interested in studying Travel and Tourism, or any of Eastleigh College’s other career-focused courses and apprenticeships can find out more on the college’s website - eastleigh.ac.uk.

Careers WeekThis year’s National Careers Week inspired students to think about the host of options available to them, with a range of visiting speakers and tutor time activities. During tutor time, students used a variety of resources to research career opportunities. Year 10 focused on CV writing and interview skills, in readiness for Employability Interviews in April. Visiting professionals included a vet and veterinary nurse from Animed Veterinary Hospital in Shedfield, who talked to Year 9 Science students, helping them to make the connection between their learning at school and the world of veterinary science and animal care. The English Department welcomed Ingrid Kelly, a BBC journalist on Inside Out and Panorama, alongside Theo Chikomba who has worked with Ingrid at Inside Out and on a few films, including Panorama special. He has also had a further six months’ experience working in a regional TV newsroom. Kirsten and Katie from the Mayflower Theatre visited the Drama Department to talk about careers within the theatre, and students came away with many inspirational ideas about options in this field. Off-site, Year 10 students attended the Higher Education Fair hosted by Barton Peveril.

Wyvern’s Careers Leader Katie Bruce, said ‘We’re extremely grateful to the visiting professionals who gave up their time to support Careers Week. In the current fast moving employment climate, it is important that students realise the opportunities available to them’.

Barton Peveril Higher Education & Futures FairsA group of 50 Year 10 students attended Barton Peveril’s Higher Education Fair, a fantastic opportunity to speak to representatives from over 80 universities and Higher Education providers. Another group attended the Futures Fair, where they met local employers from around the area to find out about the employment opportunities available, including higher and degree apprenticeships. Students came away from the fairs with a greater knowledge of their future options, and some even arranged to contact the businesses to organise work experience over the summer.

Spotlight on

Careers

Page 15: COMMUNiTY Links - Wyvern College, Eastleigh€¦ · Sat 14 Sep, Eastleigh Remembers, 11am-5pm, Leigh Road, Free A special FREE family event paying tribute to Eastleigh’s role in

Healthcare Science Trip A group of Wyvern students attended the Healthcare Science and Allied Health Professionals careers event at the University of Southampton Hospital, where students were able to investigate, discuss and gather information on the extensive number of careers available within the hospital environment.

Different Healthcare Science and Allied Health Professionals provided hands-on experiences of various roles in their departments. Healthcare Science professions play a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a huge number of medical conditions and Allied Healthcare professions provide treatment and rehabilitation for adults and children. This was an amazing opportunity for the students, who were lucky enough to be able to extract their own DNA, use Ultrasound machines to scan their bones, and even work in a resuscitation unit to experience the day to day roles of healthcare professionals.

Employability Interview DayWyvern held another successful Employability Interview Day for Year 10 students. This year 24 volunteers from a wide range of career backgrounds interviewed students on a one to one basis. The day had a real buzz and every student came away with a sense of achievement. The interviewers commented on how well the students came across and had these been real interviews, many students would have been offered a job there and then! Well done Year 10 and thank you again to the volunteers who gave up their day to take part.

University of Oxford Taster DayMrs Kehoe and Mrs Bruce had the pleasure of accompanying a group of Year 10 students to The University of Oxford Taster Day. The day started at St Anne’s College with a welcome talk, which introduced the students to higher education and Oxford University, including some information on student finance. They then transferred to Balliol College for a workshop on student life with current college students. Students were fortunate to have lunch in the beautiful Balliol College dining hall, followed by a tour of the college campus. To end the day, students returned to St Anne’s College for three academic taster lectures, providing an insight into university teaching and learning. Afterwards, students commented that they were more informed about their Post 16 and Post 18 options and felt more confident to apply to an Oxbridge or Russell Group University.

With the warmer summer weather here, everyone at Upham School has been involved with planting and gardening this term.

Class 1 have been busy potting up lots of vegetable plants around their outside area. Courgettes, beans, spinach and everyone’s favourite – strawberries, to name a few. This has created lots of physical challenges and they have applied some of the things they have found out from their weekly Forest School visit. These have been delivered by a parent who is completing his qualification and the children have been walking out of school to a local copse which is full of trees, birds and deer!

Classes 2 and 3 have both visited Hilliers Gardens this term. Both have been learning about plant growth and Class 2 found out about pollination whilst Class 3 explored the biodiversity of plants.

Children in Class 4 have helped plant up some new raised beds in school. The school is trying to create an area to attract even more bees – they are very lucky to have a large colony of solitary bees in school, and hope these bee-friendly plants will provide much needed food for them later in the season.

UPHAM CE(A) PRIMARY SCHOOL

Governors, staff, parents and children at Durley Primary School are all thrilled to have achieved an OUTSTANDING judgement in their recent Ofsted inspection.

The inspection report captured so many aspects of the village school, especially the ‘confident, welcoming and polite’ children whose ‘behaviour is exemplary’ with ‘excellent attitudes to learning ’. It is an incredible achievement for any school to receive this grading and everyone involved with the school is delighted that this provision has been recognised in all areas by Ofsted.

At Durley School, the commitment and care from all staff every day is phenomenal and we all feel proud to be part of such a positive school team that is ambitious for the pupils. Key features of the report include the ‘high quality curriculum’ offering ‘wide ranging opportunities for pupils’, the ‘pastoral environment’ and ‘fantastic ethos’ as well as the ‘inclusivity for every child’, which sits well alongside the ‘excellent teaching in English and maths’ and ‘consistently high expectations set by teachers’.

Governors were also recognized for being

tremendous in their ‘strong support and challenge’ and are proud of their contribution to the outstanding judgement of the leadership and management of the school.

The school is pleased to have their hard work recognized, however it is not seen as an end-point of the journey for Durley School, who have always been ambitious in their desire to provide the very best education for their children each and every day and will continue with the drive to give children a life-long love of learning.

In the style of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, during a week in June; On Monday we began Book Week by reading ‘The Word Collector’ by Peter Reynolds in assembly, a story about a boy who collected interesting words. All the children left with a word to read and find its meaning, the words included: symphony, guacamole, effervescent, brilliant, everlasting. Year R brought in a favourite book to share with a friend with adventure stories, fairy tales and non-fiction books to name a few. On Tuesday, some Year Two children visited the Apple Store in Southampton. The children learnt how to use the Clips app, creating their own presentation, incorporating and editing text, graphics, video and sound. Tuesday also saw Year One delve into the world of shadow puppetry with a performance from ‘1,2,3 Stories 3’. They also brought Oliver Jeffers book ‘The Great Paper Caper’ to life, holding their own paper aeroplane contest with Germany Class being the champions! On Wednesday the ‘Read Around the World’ initiative was launched, with children receiving their Reading Passports, having to read seven books from different countries on a worldwide theme. On Thursday children brought in unwanted books from home in exchange for tokens for the Book Swap. Some children from Year Two also took part in the Cluster Tennis Festival at Bishops Waltham Tennis Courts, led by Active Academy. They played against other local schools, putting into practice skills learnt within PE and demonstrating our School Values of Collaboration, Perseverance and Respect. On Friday Book Week came to an end with children and staff coming to school in pyjamas! There were even some parents who came in to read stories at the beginning and end of the day.

Since the last newsletter, Year 3 pupils have visited Hilliers Garden Centre, Year 4 have completed their swimming programme and visited The Sustainability Centre, Year 5 have been away to Stubbington Study Centre for their residential, and Year 6 have celebrated VE day as a culmination of the World War 2 topic.

The SATS are all over and Year 6 pupils are now looking forward to their residential trip to Fairthorne Manor. Everyone is also getting excited about, and practising hard for, the end of year production – ‘Alice in Wonderland Jr’.

There have been many sporting events taking place, with the highlight of these perhaps being the Boys’ Football Team representing the South West of England in the English Schools’ Football Association National Finals. They ended up as runners up – the second best team in England!

Shortly, the transition activities for September will begin and the children will spend some time in their new class with their new teacher. There will also be an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s new teacher at an Open Evening on Monday 1st July. One of the big changes for September will be the introduction of a new uniform for all new children to the school, with all children wearing it from September 2020.

The School Report

FAIR OAK JUNIOR SCHOOL

FAIR OAK INFANT SCHOOL There are no two weeks the same at Fair Oak Infant School, with so much going on it can be difficult to keep our Twitter account up to date!

On Saturday children reflected on their learning at home and on Sunday they looked forward to a new week of learning adventures.

Keep up with everything going on by following our Tweets on Twitter, @FairOakInfant… we’ve even had a like from Tim Cook, CEO of Apple!

Stoke Park Junior School pupils have been building towards a brighter future this term. After a successful Tesco Bags for Help appeal in local supermarkets and Express stores where customers were given a token to choose their favourite local cause, the school was awarded a grant to make a purchase towards learning resources. Investing in STEM activities, it was decided to purchase sets of Lego WeDo robots; a great resource and one that is often outside the financial reach of many schools because of the associated costs. Thirty-five boxes of WeDo arrived and children were introduced to the very exciting technology after the frantic unboxing – think Christmas morning in Denmark!

A rolling programme of introduction was carried out and children across the school were introduced to Milo, the WeDo robot that is the main build character. Teachers throughout the school panicked at the prospect of thousands of Lego pieces disappearing up vacuum cleaner pipes at the end of the day and building began. The children absolutely loved their lessons, the chance to ‘play’ in lessons was grasped with two hands and bricks began to take form. Cooling fans, spy robots and race cars were amongst the amazing creations that sprang to life. The children had the chance to put their coding skills to the test too, seeing how they could adapt their devices for different purposes. Could they turn the Spy Robot into a burglar alarm to stop their classmates stealing their water bottles? Could they add the sound so horrific that everyone pleaded with them to stop? Of course they could!

The School ReportSTOKE PARK INFANT SCHOOL

During an inspiring Science Week, children at Stoke Park Infants School had the opportunity to visit the London Science Museum.

Year 1 children got the chance to apply a range of STEM skills when exploring ‘The Garden’, which offered the pupils an exciting hands-on investigation of Science and Technology. During their session they investigated: different ways of moving water, floating and sinking, materials and forces on a simulated construction site, and how sound and light can travel. The classes were all resourceful and demonstrated many engineering and problem solving skills.

Year 2 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit the ‘Pattern Pod’. The children were enthusiastic as they applied their knowledge of coding, debugging and programming to solve a range of multi-sensory problems in the interactive workshop. Like miniature scientists the children had to explore and make predictions about events on earth.

Bringing Learning to Life at the London Science Museum

The children were also fascinated by the Museum’s incredible displays of scientific achievement. Many of the children were mesmerised and curious about how transport had changed over time and their imaginations even looked to the sky as they learnt about space exploration. It was a fantastic day and many happy and inspiring memories were made for both the children and the adults who were fortunate enough to attend this trip.

…and that’s why half of the population hasn’t made one. However, what is often misunderstood is that a Will does a whole lot more than just state who should receive your property and money. Let’s look at exactly what a will can do in more detail:

Appoint executors: These are the people that look after the administration of your estate and who carry out your wishes at your death. They have a lot of responsibility, thus you want a trusted family member, friend or professional to do this job.

State funeral wishes: You may have a family burial plot or want a dearly loved song sung at your funeral. These wishes can all be stated in your Will.

Appoint guardians: Through a Will you can appoint guardians to look after your children if they are under 18. You can also make financial arrangements in your Will for their benefit.

Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority No. 619547

Give gifts: If you have a ring which you promised your niece, or a picture which you always thought your granddaughter would love, then your Will is the place to make this gift. You can also give money to, say, a friend or a charity, or even give certain investments to certain individuals.

Protect loved ones: With the modern family unit meaning that remarriages are commonplace, a Will can help you protect children from previous marriages and ensure that they get a share of your estate. It’s important to note that marriage revokes a Will, making it completely void, so it’s important to make a new Will if you’re considering marriage or have recently got married.

Avoid unwanted beneficiaries: Without a Will your estate will pass by intestacy, meaning that it may not pass to those you wish it to. For example, if you die with no Will and have no spouse or children then your estate would automatically pass to your parents or siblings even if you’d have preferred it to go elsewhere. It is also very important to make a Will if you are not married to your partner because, by law, they would not be entitled to a share of your estate without one. Even if you are married, it is not necessarily the case that your entire estate will pass to your spouse.

Tax planning and asset management: A Will can help avoid higher than necessary tax bills, or manage your assets on your death to, for example, protect your loved ones and maximise their inheritance.

Avoid bad feeling: Most importantly, a Will can make it easier for your loved ones and friends to manage your affairs after your death. This can reduce the problems, arguments and bad feeling that sometimes result from the absence of a Will.

For an informal chat about making a Will, or reviewing a current Will, please contact us at Knight Polson. We offer an empathetic ear and give a friendly, confidential and supportive service which will guide you through every step to achieving a Will which meets your goals and puts your mind at ease.

WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?There are many excuses for not making a Will...

Everything will go to my husband anyway!

I’m too young!

Theft from motor vehicles

We have recently received a number of reports of theft from motor vehicles in Fair Oak and Horton Heath. We would like to give you the following advice to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim:

• Ensure your car is locked and the windows are closed (leaving it unlocked may invalidate your

insurance should an incident occur). • Upon locking your vehicle try your car door to ensure it is actually locked. • Park your car in an attended car park. • Look for public car parks approved by the Park Mark scheme. • When parking at home, use your garage. If you don't have a garage, park in a well-lit area. • Don't leave anything on display in your vehicle, take all your personal possessions with you

when you leave the vehicle. • Remove sat nav holders and visible sat nav ring marks from windscreens. • Leave the glove box open to show there's nothing inside. • Fit an alarm or immobiliser to your car. • You can register your property for free at www.immobilise.com • Do not store your car's documents in the car.

You can find lots more crime prevention advice on our website www.hampshire.police.uk

Summer Crime Prevention We would like to remind you to consider the following advice as the weather starts to warm up and the evenings become lighter:

• Keep ground floor or accessible windows locked in rooms you are not using • Don’t leave doors and patio doors open • If you are doing some DIY, do not leave ladders and tools out, lock them away • Lock side or rear gates which provide access to your garden • If you are in the back garden, do not leave the front door unlocked • Remember to shut car windows and sunrooves, even while parked on the driveway

Schools Parking

Parking in the roads around the Wyvern campus continues to be an issue and Eastleigh East Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently working with other agencies and the schools in order to tackle this. We are patrolling the relevant roads at the key times as often as possible and will be issuing fixed penalty tickets and/or advice to motorists. We would encourage you to use the “Park and Stride” schemes wherever possible, which are located at The Clock Inn, Sandy Lane and The Lapstone, Botley Road. We would also like to inform you of the following parking guidelines and remind you to be considerate of other road users, pedestrians and residents:

• Do not park within 10 metres of any junction. • Do not park on corners. • Do not block driveways or public access roads • Do not block the pavement. A wheelchair or buggy should be able to get past your vehicle on

the pavement.

A culmination of three years’ hard work and perseverance saw Wyvern’s Year 11 Boys’ Team emerge as the deserved winners of this year’s Hampshire County Football Cup Final.

The team started to come together in Year 9, getting through to the District Cup Final – ultimately losing out to Thornden. Year 10 saw them go one better and beat Thornden in a re-match to win at district and go on to reach round eight of the national competition. It demonstrated that this was a squad of real quality, prepared to work hard to improve. Over the past three years they have played over 40 fixtures in a range of locations and their talents were recognised regionally as well, with five players going on to represent the district and three the county.

So to Year 11 – and whilst not doing so well at the nationals this year, the boys progressed through the county tournament, beating Warblington, The Petersfield School, Costello in the quarter-finals, and the Isle of Wight’s Christ the King in the semi-final on the Pavilion Field.

Friday 10th May saw the final against Kings’ School kick off at 7pm at Winchester Football Club, watched by a crowd of over 200. The first half was a slightly anxious affair but Wyvern took the lead thanks to an unbelievable bicycle kick from Alfie. In the second half, the Wyvern team dominated play and a penalty mid-way through, from captain George, saw the lead double. And it remained 2-0 until the final whistle. It was a superb performance from the squad,

showing their talent and ability to keep calm, remain disciplined and stick to the principles of fair play. Man of the match was awarded to Dan, capping off a great night for the team. The support for Wyvern on the night was fantastic and the team would like to say thank you to everyone who came along to cheer them.

Well done to all the boys and coach Simon Watson, not just for bringing the cup to Wyvern but also showing how working hard, both physically and mentally, can bring fantastic rewards. They did themselves and the college proud!

Victory at the

County Cup Final!
