Chinese Hospital Grand OpeningOn Monday, April 18, 2016, Chinese Hospital celebrated the historic grand opening of its New Patient Tower.

Early that morning, before the public ceremonies began, the hospital was officially blessed by Buddhist and Catholic priests to ensure smooth operation for years to come. Then, the festivities were kicked-off with a special performance by Beach Blanket Babylon, a famous San Francisco group, followed by special remarks from the leaders of the hospital, Board of Trustees, Chinatown district’s Supervisor, and San Francisco’s Mayor Ed Lee. The ribbon- cutting ceremony was cheered-on with a Lion Dance performance that included firecrackers to ensure good luck for the hospital

The history of Chinese Hospital began in 1899 when the 15 Chinatown organizations opened the Tung Wah Dispensary on Sacramento Street. While a second dispensary was opened after the destructive 1906 earthquake and fire, the leaders realized the need for a modern hospital to care for the community. They would once again raise funds to open the original Chinese Hospital on April 18, 1925.

This year’s opening of the New Patient Tower marks a special historical milestone for the hospital— 91 years to the day. It replaces the original 1925 Chinese Hospital building. The New Patient Tower is a modern, state-of-the-art hospital with innovative features that is focused on healing. The New Patient Tower is a earthquake safe, 100,000 square feet, 8-story building. Nearly every service has been expanded with new services added. It includes 88 total patient beds, four surgical units and a new 23-bed Skilled Nursing Unit. The state-of-the- art diagnostic imaging department houses all new equipment including CT Scanner, Ultrasound and a MRI.

The New Patient Tower was carefully planned and designed to incorporate the newest technology while ensuring a thoughtful approach to healing. The design and artwork inside is Asian-themed with imageries of water, fish, flowers, and landscape to provide for a serene environment when patients and families stay and visit. The new Chinese Hospital is a total package that is designed and built with one thing in mind – to create the best healing environment for our community.

The entire staff and Board of Trustee of Chinese Hospital is pleased to welcome this amazing New Patient Tower which was built for the community’s benefit.

Here Comes the Sun – Sun Safety Tips Summer is here! It is time to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and outdoor activities. Some exposure to sunlight can be fun. Too much can be dangerous. It is vital for everyone to protect our skin since it protects our bodies and regulates our body temperature.

With longer daylight hours, we’re all pursuing outdoor activities to get physically fit and develop our overall well-being. However, if we don’t properly protect our skin, the immediate danger of overexposure from the sun is an aching and painful sunburn. If you look at sun burnt skin under a strong microscope, you would see that the cells and blood vessels have been damaged, depending on the overexposure of time spent under the sun’s rays. The long term effects of being exposed to the sun include more serious health problems such as skin cancer, premature skin aging, and eye damage.

So, do yourself a favor and follow these healthy safety tips:

1. Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going outside, and every few hours to protect yourself from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The FDA recommends using a sun protection factor (SPF) value of at least 15.

2. Wear protective long sleeve clothing, sunglasses, and a brim hat to expose less of your skin.

3. Remember that the sun’s rays are most harmful between the hours of 10am to 4:00pm, so please adjust your schedule to early mornings or evenings for outdoor exercises.

4. Drink lots of water to help replace fluid loss.

5. Wear wraparound sunglasses with 99 or higher UV block.

6. Protect yourself even on cloudy days.

7. Teach your children the dangers of the sun and provide safety tips.

Good luck protecting and preserving your beautiful skin!

What is Eczema?Eczema (say EK-zeh-ma) is a term for a group of medical skin conditions. The exact cause of eczema is unknown. Skin allergies may be involved in some forms of eczema.

Eczema is not contagious. It affects about 10 to 20% of infants. And 3% of adults and children in the United States have eczema. Most infants will outgrow this condition. Family members may have it. It is found in families with a history of allergies or asthma. Health care workers with skin problems on the hand may develop eczema.

The symptoms of eczema vary from person to person and may include:

• Itching, especially at night

• Red to brownish–gray patches

• Small raised bumps, which may leak fluid and crust over when scratched

• Thickened, cracked, dry, scaly skin

No cure has been found, but treatments and self-care measure can relieve itching. To decrease the symptoms of eczema:

• Avoid taking long hot baths or showers

• Don’t scratch that itch

• Reduce stress, avoid sweating

• Avoid wool in clothing, blankets and carpets

• Wear soft cotton clothes

• Use fragrance-free lotions and creams to keep the skin moist

• Use cold compresses to relieve itching or over the counter products such as hydrocortisone 1% cream

If you think you have eczema, talk to your doctor. You may be referred to a dermatologist or skin doctor. Follow your doctor’s directions. Be sure to take your medications as directed.

Acupuncture & FertilityFor many people, having a baby is one of life’s most important experiences. It is common for individuals and couples to experience questions, uncertainty, changes and challenges that affect their body, emotions and relationship.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used for centuries to support fertility, and includes several modalities like acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary and lifestyle counseling. These modalities are commonly combined to support the various stages of conception and pregnancy, as well as postpartum health for the mother and baby.

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used to treat many types of fertility disorders for both women and for men. While acupuncture and herbs will not work for all causes of infertility, individuals can benefit from acupuncture’s potential effect for reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and balancing the endocrine system.

Acupuncture can be used by women seeking to get pregnant naturally, as well as in conjunction with assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor-egg transfer, and cryopreservation. Acupuncture may also be used to help women with diagnosed elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss (RPL), unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, luteal phase defect, thin uterine lining, hyperprolactinemia (when not caused by a prolactinoma), and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with anovulatory cycles.

Although there is less research on the effects of acupuncture on male fertility, studies suggest that acupuncture may improve the overall quality and structural integrity of sperm, improve sperm motility and morphology, and increase the overall number of normal sperm in a group of men with infertility problems, including sperm-DNA-fragmentation.

What does treatment involve?

The specific modalities, frequency and duration of treatment are prescribed to match each individual’s or couple’s needs. In general, a healthy person (male or female) of childbearing age should prepare for three to four months of continuous treatment of one to two weekly visits in order to address any underlying conditions impairing fertility. The ability to conceive and carry a baby will vary between individuals and couples, but maintaining a regular frequency of treatments generally increases the chances of healthy fertilization.

Although most insurance plans do not cover acupuncture for infertility specifically, they do cover treatment for symptoms which may be related to infertility such as menstrual and stress-related pain.

If you are interested in determining whether acupuncture can help you, please talk to your doctor or call Chinese Hospital East West Health Services at 1-415-795-8100.

What Do Newborns Need?Baby crib, baby clothes, baby diapers...Many things are needed to care for newborns. Very important on the list is a baby doctor! A pediatrician can be found on your health plan’s provider directory. Once you find a pediatrician, be sure to make a prenatal appointment to meet the baby doctor. He or she will tell you about health issues important in nurturing a newborn before and after birth.

Every newborn has important tests to do after birth. The first is an oxygen test to make sure the baby’s heart is healthy. The next is a blood test to check for inherited conditions. The last is a special light to check the baby for jaundice or yellowing of the skin. Every day a newborn is weighed to make sure they are getting the mother’s milk they need. You can call the Chinese Community Health Resource Center (CCHRC) at 1-415-677-2473 to sign up for the “Preparing for the Baby Class” to learn more. CCHP members can join this class for free.

Eye Care for ChildrenMost children wear glasses to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Nearsightedness is caused by the eye being too long and distant objects appear blurry. Farsightedness is the opposite, where the eye is too short and closer objects are blurry. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, so vision is blurry and distorted at all distances.

Some children are born with severe refractive errors, and if left uncorrected, the vision brain cells don’t mature normally for the eye to develop as it should. This problem is called Amblyopia or lazy eye, which should be treated as soon as possible while the child’s vision system is still developing. Most often, uncorrected refractive errors can be easily treated with prescription glasses, except for those children with amblyopia that require additional patching and vision therapy.

As the eye continues to grow during childhood, children become more nearsighted. An effective way to control nearsightedness progression is Orthokeratology (Ortho-K), a technique where the cornea is reshaped using custom-made contact lenses. Your child needs to continue to wear lenses overnight to maintain the effect. Majority of children can achieve normal to near normal vision during the day after removing their contact lenses. Many research studies found it to be effective in slowing down nearsightedness progression and the elongation of eyeball length in children.

Healthy vision is essential to your child’s ability to learn and to play sports and other activities. Schedule a yearly exam for early detection of vision problems and take advantage of Ortho-K to control nearsightedness.

Prevention of Hepatitis BHepatitis means inflammation of the liver. One of the most common causes of hepatitis is due to the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and eventually cancer. The damaged liver will lose its ability to perform many important functions.

The HBV is spread through BIRTH (from mother to child), BLOOD and SEX. After being exposed to hepatitis B virus, you may or may not become infected. You may have symptoms and recover; or you may be symptom-free at first, but develop problems with your liver later on. In some cases, as with early childhood exposure, you may become chronically infected and should be seen by your physician at least once a year.

To best way to protect yourself from this serious disease is to be screened for hepatitis B with a simple blood test and get vaccinated. The vaccine will not cause hepatitis B infection. It is safe and effective and can protect you for life.

Are You Prediabetic? Sign Up for Chinese Hospital Diabetes Prevention Program!Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Prediabetes means that your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Without any changes, prediabetes is likely to become type 2 diabetes in 10 years or less. However, with healthy lifestyle changes, you can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half by losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight. That is about 8 to 11 pounds for a person weighing 160 pounds.

Through Chinese Hospital Diabetes Prevention Program, participants work in a group with a trained lifestyle coach to learn the skills needed to lose weight, become more physically active, and manage stress. Chinese Hospital Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It’s proven to prevent or delay onset of type 2 diabetes.

The local program will be offered in both English and Chinese at Chinese Hospital Outpatient Center Gellert Health Services, 386 Gellert Boulevard, Daly City. The program is FREE to CCHP members and Chinese Community Health Services patients, $220 for everyone else. (We do not accept other insurance). Chinese Hospital Diabetes Prevention Program groups meet once a week for 16 weeks, then once a month for 6 months.

If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes (a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125mg/dl; or A1c level between 5.7 and 6.4), or you are overweight and have a family history of diabetes, you are qualified for this program. To find more information about your eligibility or to register, please call 1-415-677-2458.
