Once again, 79 volunteers donated their time to provide 1,656 hours of free healthcare to those in our community with low

incomes and no health insurance. Many patients had gone for months or years without seeing a healthcare provider or taking their medications. This inability to access healthcare means that preventative screenings were not performed, setting the stage for more advanced disease(s). Through compassionate care, we are gratified to see health restored and hope regained.

The importance of the safety net provided by the Community Free Clinic once again cannot be overstated – lives are saved and catastrophic, expensive emergency care is avoided. The Community Free Clinic’s beacon of hope restores health and well-being to people who are ill, out of medical supplies, filled with despair, and suffering from all of the stresses that poverty imposes.

With the support of our benefactors we are able to break the cycle of ED visits, admissions to the hospital, discharge and then repeated occurrences of this sequence of events. By supporting our Free Clinic patients, donors and volunteers provide the intervention so necessary to prevent diseases from escalating and the diagnosis of new medical problems before they are out of control.

Thank you for this strong partnership dedicated to helping those who have no other advocate.

Sincerely,

Niki Kenny, RNCommunity Free Clinic Director

In the spring of 2010, The Community Free Clinic was notified that our building, located on the Lockwood-MacDonald

campus, was to be demolished to make room for the new John and Marnie Demmer Wellness Pavilion and Dialysis Center. This news, which came roughly 18 months sooner than we had anticipated, prompted an urgent search for a new home that would meet the many needs of a medical clinic. With strong support from Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, a site was chosen on the main Hospital campus in the area of the former Emergency Department.

On May 18, 2010, we arrived with a flurry of boxes, stretchers, and loads of other equipment - just as walls were coming down and others were going up. Although the construction crew was still completing projects, they welcomed us and good-naturedly put up with our planning, measuring (and re-measuring), unpacking, and general disruption of the site.

Three weeks later, we were ready to welcome patients and resume clinic services. Along with providing high quality care to those in need, our intent was to make the new Clinic as welcoming and trustworthy to our patients and volunteers as the former site. We are proud to learn that we have surpassed expectations as both patients and volunteers have expressed their approval with numerous compliments on our new “digs.” Most importantly, we met the challenge of finding a new site with minimum interruption of services and care.

The finishing touch was the commitment and generosity of one of our donors who took it upon herself to enhance the outside entrance with flowers and benches. When a patient says, “Is this for us?” with a big smile on her face, you know the welcome message has been received.

“I feel blessed to have free medical care. The people (staff) are very considerate, respectful, and care deeply

for patients. Without the Clinic, I could not afford medical treatment need and medications. Thank you all sincerely.”

– 46-year-old male patient

“Thank you very much for all the help you have given over the years. If it wasn’t for your help, my asthma probably would have killed me by

now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”– 51-year-old male patient
