Babysitting PreparednessGuidelines for safe infant and child care have changed over the years and this course will help ensure that participants’ knowledge and skills are up to date. Topics include feeding, diapering, safety in the home, prevention of SIDS, prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome, basic first aid skills, how to cope with a crying baby, pediatric CPR and how to start a babysitting business. The course is led by nationally certified instructors who have experience as emergency responders in both professional and community environments. This course is popular among teens, expecting parents and grandparents. For ages 12 to adult. Completion of the course results in a two–year certification from the American Safety and Health Institute. Note that this class is for babysitting certification only and is not a certification for day care professionals, lifeguards, camp counselors or those in the medical field.

Child Safety Seat CheckAt this event, parents and caregivers learn what type of safety seat or seatbelt fits a child’s needs and how to secure a child in it. Technicians will focus on proper installation, safety recommendations and current laws as well as check for recalls, make sure the seat is compatible with a vehicle and explain the limits of the car seat. Safety seat checks are done by appointment only.

Wilderness First Aid BasicsThis Wilderness First Aid Basics course will provide you with a foundational knowledge of common medical and traumatic problems that may occur in a wilderness setting. Evaluate the difference between non-urgent, urgent, and emergency situations. Identify and manage the most common wilderness injuries and illnesses. This basic level course is suitable for those who occasionally enjoy day hikes, snowshoeing, camping or other short-term outdoor activities. This class is also good for camp counselors who lead outdoor trips and activities. Course completion results in a two-year certification card from the Emergency Care & Safety Institute. This course does not include CPR.

Wilderness First AidThis hands–on course is designed for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, kayakers, hunters and individuals working in remote locations. It focuses on caring for people who become ill or injured far from medical care. Participants learn to create makeshift items to assist with immobilization, bleeding control and other medical necessities. Course completion results in certification in Wilderness First Aid by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. This course does not include CPR. This course meets BSA guidelines.

Pet First Aid, CPR and Disaster PreparednessThis course is designed for pet owners and pet caregivers. It covers common health– and safety–related issues for pets: first aid basics, CPR, choking maneuvers, when to seek professional care and disaster planning. Participants practice skills on lifelike pet mannequins. Course completion results in a two-year certification card from the Emergency Care and Safety Institute.

Sports First Aid and Injury PreventionDeveloped to help coaches, athletic trainers, athletes and parents of athletes manage the emergencies one may encounter while participating in sports. This course includes coverage of the phases of injury and the injury prevention model, prevention tips for injuries common to specific sports (such as sprains and concussions) and appropriate treatment for common injuries and illnesses. Topics include assessment, bleeding control, shock management, assessment illness and assessment injury. This course meets the New York State coaching requirements for first aid. Successful completion will result in a certification card from the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. Completion of this course will not result in a CPR AED certification card. This course can, however, be taken in conjunction with our American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR AED certification course.

American Heart Association Family and Friends® CPR AEDThis course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only™ CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child automated external defibrillator (AED) use, infant CPR with breaths, and relief of choking in an adult, child or infant. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment using the American Heart Association’s proven practice–while–watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. Family and Friends CPR is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a certification card. It’s ideal for schools, community groups, new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. This course is not suitable for those who need to earn a CPR certification card for their profession.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION COURSES

American Heart Association Heartsaver® Pediatric First Aid CPR AEDThis course is designed to meet the regulatory requirements for childcare workers in all 50 states. It is suitable for day care workers, camp counselors, students and other community professionals who work with children. It is also popular with parents and grandparents. It teaches how to respond to and manage illnesses and injuries for a child or infant in the first few minutes, until professional help arrives. It covers the four steps of first aid and first aid skills, including finding the problem, stopping bleeding, bandaging and using an epinephrine pen. Child CPR AED, infant CPR and a module in adult CPR AED and Asthma Care Training for Childcare Providers are also included in this program. Successful completion results in a certification card valid for two years. This course is not for healthcare providers. Please see pages 6-13 for courses designed for healthcare providers.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) InstructorThis course is designed to prepare American Heart Association (AHA) instructors to disseminate the science, skills and philosophy of resuscitation programs to participants enrolled in AHA courses. Current AHA BLS HCP certification is required. (It must be an AHA certification. No other type of CPR, such as ProCPR, SureFire CPR or CPR 1-2-3 will be accepted.) Prior teaching experience is beneficial. Participants who complete this course will be allowed to teach AHA BLS and Heartsaver® courses. This is a multi-part course consisting of online training that must be completed prior to the classroom-based training. Participants are also required to observe a class being taught and teach their own class while being monitored by training center faculty. Participants must successfully complete all steps within five months. Course completion results in a certification card valid for two years from the American Heart Association.

It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. Skills are taught in large group sessions and small group learning and testing stations where case–based scenarios are presented. American Heart Association ACLS Instructor ClassParticipants will develop proficiency in teaching, organizing, coordinating and and conducting an ACLS Provider Course. ACLS Instructors must have a firm working knowledge and understanding of the ACLS material. They are also expected to demonstrate in-depth detailed knowledge of current emergency cardiac care. Participants learn to design a provider course that meets the needs of a specific student population. Currently accepted principles of adult learning, the ability to sequence instruction, the use of interactive teaching strategies and evaluation of student learning and progress are essential facets of this course. After successful completion of this course, participants will be required to conduct an AHA ACLS class to receive their certificate. An AHA Training Center (TC) Faculty member will monitor the student teacher during the ACLS class. After a successful evaluation, course completion results in a two-year ACLS Instructor card.
