How to pay for…… Thunder Hawk Care CASH, CHECK, & MONEY ORDER PAYMENTS: Families are not required to use the automatic payment service, and are still welcome/expected to pay weekly or bi-weekly with Cash, Check, or Money Order. Because our program is a pre-pay program, payment must be made in advance of the service, not after the service has been provided. Because multiple people are able to enter payments in the main office, and we have several families with the same last name in our program, please write your child’s name in the memo section of your check so that we can ensure it gets entered in the right account. Please make checks payable to: LITTLE THUNDER HAWKS or JUNIOR THUNDER HAWKS. If you have a child in both programs (Junior Thunder Hawk Care & Little Thunder Hawk Care) you will still need to write 2 separate checks. At this time you cannot combine payments on one check. AUTO ACH/CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS: We are excited to offer the safety, convenience and ease of Tuition Express - a payment processing system that allows secure, on-time tuition and fee payments to be made from either your bank account or credit card bi-weekly! Enrollment forms are available in the Thunder Hawk Care Office at Sanford. ONE TIME/NON-RECURRING CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS: Families are eligible to make one-time (not recurring automatic) credit card payments in person at the Sanford office or by calling 320-269-6538 ext. 3101 (Trish) or ext. 3262 (Ashley). Credit card information for one-time transactions is not stored in our system so families will need to stop in or call with their card information each time they want to use this option.

Coordinator’s Corner

Hello Families, If you are new to Montevideo or are new parents we would love to meet your family and show you our ECFE and SWNS preschool classrooms, meet teachers and discuss programming by calling Sanford. A parent is a child’s first and most important teacher. ECFE is built on the concept of family as the cornerstone of the educational system. We are here to listen, answer questions, and help connect families and schools. Current research shows that preschool and early educational experiences help to lay a solid foundation for school success. It is wonderful to watch our district’s early learning services grow to have the ability to service Montevideo’s preschool population. There is additional funding to help serve income qualifying families. If you have a 3-5 year old child who is not registered for a preschool program or who has not gone through Early childhood screening, please do not hesitate to contact us to register. We have room in our M/W PM 3/4 year old class. Unfortunately, due to CO-VID we will not be able to have the annual Vehicle Fair or Incredible Years program this Fall, but hope you can enjoy the few classes we are able to offer. All programs are subject to change depending on CO-VID updates and changes within our school district.

Early Childhood Family Education

ECFE offers classes to help your family grow and learn together. We strengthen families by providing an informal place to meet, play and learn with other young children and parents. You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Our mission is to provide support and information to families and help all children prepare for school success. Some classes will have a separate parent education piece with child separation and others will be non-separating. This will be noted in the class descriptions. Classes will fill with 8-12 children; register early!

What do you do at an ECFE Class? ECFE classes are based on three parts:

1) GROWING TOGETHER

For you and your child, a chance for parent and child to engage in learning activities that are planned by a

licensed Early Childhood Educator for your child’s age group. Together, you can enjoy learning through art,

music, stories, and even play time!

2) GROWING INDEPENDENTLY For your child, a part of each class is for children to

have fun learning through play using art, science, movement, finger plays, games, and stories with the

Early Childhood Educator, the Para-Professional, and the other children. This will help them to develop a

healthy self-concept and a joy of learning.

3) GROWING CONFIDENTLY

For you, while children are with the Educator and Para, parents join other parents in a discussion time led by a licensed Parent Educator. Parents can choose to

discuss current family topics, share ideas and concerns, and learn from each other. Discussion time for infants and toddlers are in the same room as the parents. For

children two years and up, parents separate to the parent education room.

The Power of Showing Up: How Parental Presence Shapes Who Our Kids Become & How Their Brains Get Wired Enjoy great discussion centered around a current parenting book. Readers and non-readers are welcome! Available as virtual/online class. One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out– in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships– is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as bestselling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence. Join licensed Parent Educator, Kris Christopherson, for a lively and valuable discussion filled with ideas, tips, and takeaways to adapt for your family.

The Yes Brain Book Club – one-time book group discussion! Join other parents of ECFE families as we read The Yes Brain by Daniel J. Siegel, MD, and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD. Read on your own schedule and meet together for a time to discuss and explore the book with other parents and a licensed parent educator. The book, The Yes Brain, is a reader-friendly guide in helping with how to cultivate courage, curiosity, and resilience in your child. When kids work from a Yes Brain, they’re more willing to take chances and explore. They’re more curios, imaginative, and less worried about making mistakes. They’re better at relationships and more flexible and resilient when it comes to handling adversity and big feelings. Begin reading whenever it works for you! Offered as a vitual/online class! Think Small ParentPowered Texts is a free research based program for parents of children ages 0-5, proven to lead to learning gains, helping children get ready for kindergarten. Parents who signup for Think Small Parent Powered Texts receive three messages per week with fun facts about your child’s development, and easy to implement tips on how to encourage intentional learning in the everyday moments like snack time, going to the store, or getting ready for bed. Think Small ParentPowered Texts provides continuous support to parents throughout the year, doesn’t require a great deal of time, and covers all areas of development– motor, social-emotional, literacy, and math skills. All messages are based on your child’s birthdate. Guaranteeing as your child grows your messages will always be appropriate for your child’s devel-opment. Example 1 of an infant text might be a week about re-membering the importance of tummy time and to shake a colorful rattle above their head to encourage them to look up. A text for a 4 year old might state on the way to school, ask: if you could make your own planet, what would you put on it? Dinosaurs, unicorns, pizza? Talk about your planet too!

Turn everyday moments into learning opportunities for your child!

Family Play Group Parents and children explore classroom games, activities, circle time and open gym together. Infant siblings younger than a year old are welcome to attend at no charge. No parent separation, but parenting information and ideas will be shared. Educators: Kris C. & Melissa S.

Early Childhood Screening Early Childhood Screening (ECS) is required by the State of Minnesota before children start kindergarten.

Some important aspects of ECS include:

ECS is a quick, free check on your child’s health, growth, vision, hearing, speech, immunizations, overall

development and social/emotional progress.

Ideally, a child is screened between the ages of 3 and 4, to allow at least one year of free services, if

Driver’s Education-Page 16

Montevideo Driver’s Education

(The next 30 hour classroom won’t be offered until June of 2021. Look in the Feb-April brochure for more information on when you can sign up.)

Visit https://www.montevideoschools.org/comm_ed/drivers_education for more information. Scheduling your First Behind the Wheel (BTW):

After receiving your permit, sign up for your first Behind the Wheel by contacting Community Education office. The Montevideo Community Ed. office is located in Sanford Education Center- 412 S 13

th St.

Montevideo, MN 56265 at 320-269-5026.

Mark the appointment on your calendars so you/they don’t forget!

Practice with your child a few times before their first BTW with the instructor.

Instructors only schedule out about two weeks of BTW at a time, so you only schedule one at a time in 1 hour increments. Be prepared to give the student name, which classroom instructor/session they were enrolled in; phone number, and location of where to be picked up. This can be at your house if you live within city limits, or if you live in the country, the location to meet for your BTW will be in the High School parking lot by the gym doors.

Behind-the-Wheel instruction will be scheduled on an individual basis following successful completion of classroom instruction and passing of the written permit test. BTW consists of riding with the instructor in a dual-brake controlled vehicle. The six hours of driving and observation are required by the State of MN Dept. of Public Safety and will be scheduled in 1 hr increments. Other passengers may be in the vehicle during behind the wheel instruction. BTW appointments:

BRING YOUR PERMIT AND SHOW UP FOR YOUR BTW SCHEDULED TIME: Our instructors time is very important, therefore a $35 fee will be charged if you do not show up for your scheduled BTW time. If you do show up and do not have your permit with you, therefore won’t be able to drive, there will be a $35 fee charged before you can schedule your next BTW. There is a 48 Hr Cancellation policy during the business hours of 8 AM-4 PM for BTW. This means if your BTW is at 5 PM on a Thursday, you must call during 8 AM-4 PM on Tuesday to cancel or change that appointment without being charged the $35 fee. Please help hold your child responsible for these appointment times. Don’t let them back out last minute to go to a friends house or skip to do something else. If you don’t follow the 48 HR cancellation policy, you will be required to pay the $35 fee at the Comm. Ed office before we will schedule your next BTW session.

Student must physically show permit to Behind the Wheel instructor at each session. Don’t forget your permit for your BTW sessions or they will be cancelled and you will be charged a $35 fee!

Behind the Wheel can be completed any time after receiving a permit and before taking the driver’s license test. It is recommended that BTW be completed within 1 year of receiving their permit. We recommend scheduling lessons at least two weeks apart as students need to be practicing skills in between sessions.

6 hours BTW per student is required. Once each one hour BTW session is complete, you will call Comm. Ed to line up your next session, at least 2 weeks apart. The final BTW session should be lined up AFTER you have set up your road test Drivers License appt. Logged Driving Time:

50 hrs of logged driving time is needed if the parent did not attend the parent meeting or 40 hrs of logged driving time if a parent did attend the meeting (15 hrs of logged driving need to be at night)

Remember if you did attend the parent meeting (one was not offered in the Summer of 2020), you received a certificate of completion that will need to be saved and turned in when your child goes to take their driving test. A $10 fee will be charged to replace the parent certificate.

Please take this seriously. Your child's life and all other driver’s depend on it! Practice, practice, practice. Practice in all weather conditions to get them the most supervised experience.

Make sure you fill out the log completely including which skills were worked on. Upon successful completion of Behind the Wheel:

Student will receive a white card from the CE office. This card signifies course completion. DO NOT LOSE THE WHITE CARD. The white card should be put somewhere safe where it will be easy to find as it is required to take your driver’s license test. A $10 fee will be charged to replace the white card.

Student must be 16 years old and must hold their permit for 6 months before they can get their provisional license.
