REDPAINTTHE TOWN

Another successful Paint The Town Red came to a terrific close on July 1st with a great fireworks show. The day began at 11:00 am with the wonderful 8th annual Hazel McCallion Canada Day Parade in Port Credit. Luckily the rain held up for the entirety of the parade and cake cutting afterwards at La Villa Bakery. The guests were then given a free shower when the downpour began around 1:00 pm, although fun was not lost as kids, and yes we saw you too parents, splashing around in the newly made puddles. The Dunsire Kids zone was a hot spot with shows, face painting, lego building, kids karaoke and bouncy inflatables. The

Main Stage was set up from noon to 10:00 pm packed with great entertainers including dance routines, a 13-piece horn band called Sound and Furry, Mississauga Pops Orchestra, Pauly & the Goodfellas, Tom Barlow, Kelly Derrickson to only name a few. Memphis to Motown closed the event with a great performance just before the fantastic fireworks began. There really is nothing like Port Credit Canada Day fireworks. This celebration is one of a kind, in a one of a kind town, with one of a kind people. Don’t miss next year for Canada’s 150th birthday, it will be the biggest yet!

You want to sell your home and you know it needs to look its best so it can attract the highest offers, but you still have to live in it, right? I’ve done that and I remember how tough it was. With kids and pets, it was a constant struggle to have the house ready to show. Luckily the second time we sold, we were able to move in

with relatives for a couple of weeks while the house was being shown. Once we had a firm deal, we moved back in.

If you can’t move out temporarily, here are some tips to help you make the best of it.

D E - C L U T T E R .In the weeks leading up to listing the house for sale, sort things into what you will take with you and what you will either sell, donate or throw away. Don’t ever pay to move things you no longer want or need! Pack and store items that you can live without until you arrive in your new home, for example seasonal or excess décor items. This will do two things - help you keep the home tidy for showings and increase the impression of spaciousness.

C L E A N .Take the time to thoroughly clean the house down to the last fingerprint. Before you leave in advance of a showing, check sinks, toilets and mirrors and make sure they gleam like in a TV commercial.

S TA G E .Leave the house looking like something in a magazine. Remove personal photos and items so that potential buyers are able to see themselves in the home. Choose décor items that appeal to everyone. Turn on all the lights, play some soft background music and, in winter, turn on the gas fireplace. Make sure the house smells good as well.

S A F E G UA R D .To avoid having your privacy compromised by either unscrupulous or purely nosy people, put all personal documents away. Items of value, such as fine jewelry should be stored in a secure area and not just put away in a jewelry box or drawer.

P E T S .I am a pet person, but not everyone is. It is a good idea to have the pets away from the house, at least during showings, but preferably for the whole time the house is for sale to minimize possible odours, allergens and other things that might prevent a sale.

This is going to feel like a lot of work and stress, but once you sell your house and for a lot of money, you will understand that it was worthwhile.

MUST LOVE Dogs

ennifer grew up in Nova Scotia which is where her passion for animals started. Volunteering at a local veterinary clinic at the early age of

8 years old and being involved with dog training programs helped to further develop the love for her canine companions. After finishing a business program in college it only seemed natural to work towards opening a dog related business. And so it began with Jennifer working in the dog grooming industry for 14 years and grooming thousands of dogs over that period of time. With all of that experience under her belt she has now branched out and opened Bark & Brush Professional Dog Grooming.

Loving dogs is an absolute must in this industry! Every dog is treated with care and patience. No matter how big or small,

MISSISSAUGA

WATERFRONT FESTIVAL

My inspiration to create the Mississauga Waterfront Festival came from the need I saw in the community for an event that would wel-come everyone, regardless of income. I wanted the Festival to be an opportunity for families to have fun without limitations and where local service clubs could do their community work.

Page 17: Community Captured Magazine Mississauga South - JULY 2016

C O M M U N I T Y C A P T U R E D • 17

The very first Mississauga Waterfront Festival was held in 1996 to celebrate the reopening of the Part Credit Marina. That first Festival was a two day festival to celebrate the grand reopening after restoration of the Port Credit Marina we had a children’s village, with Pokaroo, Markus, Sandra Beach a very small carnival in the old soccer Pitch at the corner of Lakeshore and Hurontario. We held Dragon Boat Races, a Water Ski Show, Jet Ski Show, Pony Rides, Petting Zoo, and an Antique Trolley. Canadiana Art & Cuisine. Local merchants did give-aways and we held a Fashion Show.

While the Festival is now a three day interactive entertainment filled weekend, some things have not changed. The Festival still takes place in Port Credit. Admission is still free. And Former Mayor Hazel McCallion is still our honorary chair and one of our biggest supporters.

Hazel has supported the Festival from the beginning and her commitment speaks to the value the Festival brings to the community. Like me, she believes nothing is more important than giving children the chance to have fun and allowing parents to focus on having family time without worrying about costs.

This belief brought about the creation of the Sponsor a Child program since the inception. The Sponsor a Child program allows marginalized children and their families to attend the Mississauga Waterfront Festival, enjoy food, carnival rides and have a weekend of fun for free. Children need to laugh, make memories in their community and I am pleased that the Festival gives them the opportunity to do that.

The longevity of the Mississauga Waterfront Festival wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and creativity of the volunteer Board of Directors and office staff. A heartfelt thank you to our Full Circle Committee, for their efforts in raising funds to support out Sponsor A Child Program.

I would also like to acknowledge the assistance we receive from the City of Mississauga, the Province of Ontario and the Federal government - without their continued support we would not be the premier event we are today.

Finally, I am extremely grateful for our generous sponsors for helping make the event a reality.

Introduce your burgers to fresh flavour with spiced rubs that create a caramelized, mouthwatering patty. Use your fingers to ensure the rub reaches each crevice, crack and pore of your meat.

East meets grill. Take your backyard to new places. Swap your traditional spices for next-level Japanese, Malaysian, Thai and Korean flavours. If you're up for some experimentation, try this adventurous equation: SWEET + SOY + SPICE = YUM. Heat + tang + smoke. Fresh chilies paired with tangy vinegar and mustard make the ultimate trio. Keep your taste buds guessing bite for bite, with this grilled sandwich.

BREAD & HONEY ANYONE?

Since 1973, the Bread & Honey Festival has been held annually on the first weekend in June in the Villge of Streetsville and Memorial Park. Where’s the best location for fun festivities for the whole family? The answer of course is at the 44th Annual Streetsville Founders’ Bread & Honey Festival that was held the weekend of June 3-5th.

Saturday morning started with the highly enjoyed, village-wide Parade and ended on Sunday with an Old Fashioned Car Show.

There were many talented live perform-ers for children and adults, alike, a wide selection of carnival rides, games and hands-on educational demonstrations for the whole family, the Rotary Pancake Breakfast … and of course, FREE Bread and Honey.

ASKTHE WINE LADIES Q&A

Dear The Wine Ladies,With the summer now in full swing, and my

husbands one month holiday upon us he will

soon be resuming his duties as the “Barbecue

King” of the block. I’d like to stock up on some

wine, and am wondering what kinds of wine

might be good choices to go with barbecue fare,

particularly for his love of meat adorned with

his homemade spicy, slightly sweet and smoky

barbecue sauce! Grilled salmon too is a regular.

Thanks Wine Ladies.

- Barb

Dear Barb,Our advice would be to go for bold, youngish and fruity for meats adorned with your husbands barbecue sauce to start. Opting for wines with a little oomph, bolder in flavour, bright fruit and juicy, and with a bit of spice will allow them to stand up to both the sauce and the charred notes and smoky flavours that come from the grill. Zinfandels, for example make for a great pairing with their bold, fruity notes partnering especially well with barbecue sauce-adorned recipes, as do Syrahs, Shiraz from Australia and wines from the Rhone Valley. For other general meats on the grill, a few of our favourites these days representing suburb value are the Malbecs from Argentina, and Carmenere from Chile. Both full bodied, with rich flavours and texture and with sweet softer tannins they tend to satisfy many a palate and pair perfectly with a wide range of barbecue fare. For the occasions when simply prepared meat might be on the grill, like a juicy steak you could always go with the old traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic pairing.

To your other summer staple we are big fans of a good Pinot Noir to pair with salmon, salmon burgers or even beef burgers. As for whites, the blue sky is the limit, fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blancs are amazing with grilled veggies, herb seasoned poultry or fish, zesty and with their hint of grassy and herbaceous notes, delicious! We love an off-dry Riesling or Austria’s number one white grape Gruener Veltliner for spicy recipes, and last but not least when in doubt, “think pink”! Rosés, are all the rage these days, no longer the very sweet styles of yesteryear, a dry rose is the ultimate all around barbecue

wine. Dry, crisp, refreshing with notes of strawberries, raspberries, hints of citrus, even watermelon… rosés are able to play a dual role, with enough body to take on full flavours of foods off the grill substituting for lighter reds, and/or not too overpowering to pair with lighter fare in place of a full bodied white.

One additional word if we may, don’t be afraid to chill your reds down just a tad, we often serve them too warm, and with the summer heat, just a little chill will go a long way in getting the most enjoyment of the bottle.

CLARKSON S E C O N DA R Y S C H O O L

Exams are coming up fast at Clarkson S.S, but that did not stop the Clarkson Chargers from hosting a variety of events, from the legendary Cancer Drive to Multifest, banquets, concerts and so much more.

Although the event occurred in April, Clarkson Chargers just recently celebrated their total amount of money raised during Cancer drive. While the minimum we try to raise is $20,000, the real goal in our hearts is to surpass the year’s previous total. Last year’s total of $43,023 was a breakthrough number and, although we came very close to raising that amount this year, we still reached the remarkable total $40,020.16.

Another event that recently took place was Clarkson’s version of Carassauga, the annual Multifest organized by Mrs. Khan with the help of many other students. With many people dressed up in garments that recall different parts of their background, it was very easy to appreciate and celebrate a multicultural and diverse Canada as well as its smaller communities such as that of Clarkson. Anyone who went would say that it was a blast; from the hour-long fashion show, followed by the scrumptious food flavors, and ending with talented students performing on stage, it was pure enjoyment for all. The $3 tickets were definitely a deal.

Every year we are proud to say that we graduated many Clarkson Chargers. To celebrate these wonderful students Clarkson found, within its own school, some of the best musicians and singers to perform at the last concert of the year. Thursday, May 19th, the day of the concert, treated the audience to a “Disneyland celebration” and “on the sixteen” played. To simply say it was a moment to remember is an understatement.

The event that many Clarkson athletes and students from all grades were anxiously waiting for occurred Friday, June 10th at Clarkson itself. There, at the Athletic Banquet, students enjoyed a dinner before burning those calories off by busting some moves on the dance floor. The Athletic Banquet recognized our outstanding athletes, many of whom brought trophies, medal and banners to our proud school. Awards were also given to our most dedicated players and valuable players in every school sport. It was an event marked by many in their calendars, and they were not let down.
