Do you regularly lose energy as the day wears down – even forcing yourself to stay “with it” in mid-afternoon by grabbing an energy drink? Have you heard complaints about your snoring or wake up groggy and unrested? These are all symptoms of sleep apnea, a common disorder in which you experience a pause in breathing while you sleep. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that at least 40 million people of all ages in the U.S. have a chronic sleep disorder. So, why ask your dentist about what could be a medical condition? Without doubt, doctors are very concerned with your health and wellness. However, only trained and certified dentists can make state- of-the-art oral devices to help with sleep and energy. Dental Sleep Therapy Dr. Scott Bares, owner of Freeport Dental, is introducing dental sleep disorder therapy to Freeport and local communities. “Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can cause a person to stop breathing hundreds of times at night for just a few seconds and up to one minute,” Dr. Bares explained. “Left untreated, the stress caused by repeated lack of oxygen can lead to fatigue, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and complications with diabetes. Safety risks frequently include drowsy driving and workplace accidents.” Dr. Bares continued, “Unfortunately, sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed. Many patients may not know they have it because it’s only apparent at night. One of our primary goals is to raise awareness in the community of the health concerns caused by insufficient sleep and the importance of a clear, unobstructed airway.” The practice of dental sleep disorder therapy has been growing rapidly in recent years. We do this through consultation and the use of in-home sleep studies which are then read by a qualified physician. Depending on test results and the level of sleep apnea, a custom-fitted oral appliance may be prescribed to help keep the airway open and breathing at night,” said Dr. Bares. First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone for all of the heartfelt cards, emails, and well wishes upon the announcement of my new position here at the Chamber. I am looking forward to the future of the Chamber and continuing to provide innovative value added services and advocacy for our members. The Chamber has a lot of exciting things happening. We have been a part of the Collaborate Freeport branding effort which is currently underway. An unveiling of the branding effort has been scheduled for the public in October. We appreciate all of the input and feedback we received from surveys and interviews in May, June, and July. The Small Business Collaborative--which was derived from the City Centre proposal--is up and running. The collaborative partners include the City of Freeport, Freeport/Stephenson County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Freeport Downtown Development Foundation, Northwest Illinois Development Alliance, and the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce. I’m delighted that we hired Brian Borger as the SBC Director. Brian has been in his position since July 18 and has hit the ground running. Brian is meeting with potential new, as well as existing, businesses in order to assess needs and offer resources as well as assistance. Brian is also in the process of creating a small business “tool kit” in order to help streamline the process of starting a small business in Freeport and/or Stephenson County. Brian brings a wealth of knowledge with him and we are lucky to have him on board. If you would like to meet with Brian please contact the SBC at 815-233-6301.

The Chamber has endorsed the Committee to Change City Government’s initiative to pass a referendum on the ballot to change the City of Freeport to a managerial form of government. Petitions were circulated and subsequently certified, so please look for a lot more information on this initiative in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime you can “like” the Vote YES for Freeport Facebook page to learn more about this initiative as well as look at the Vote YES for Freeport section on our Monday emails. Consider inviting your friends to like the page as well. The Chamber has many educational opportunities coming in the next couple months. We have partnered with the All our Kids Network, United Way of Northwest Illinois, and Highland Community College to bring “The Raising of America” series to Freeport. This is a five part series that will begin August 30. We have also partnered with Highland Community College Business Institute to bring a high level, four part Customer Service Training seminar to our members that will begin in October. If you would like more information about either of these seminars please visit our website at www.freeportilchamber.com or call the Chamber at 815-233-1350. The Chamber’s Young Professional’s Network is up and running stronger than ever. We have a “Sip n Savor” cookout and wine tasting event scheduled from September 8th at Famous Fossil Winery. We also have a Trivia Night with Jitterbug events scheduled for November 4. If you are a young professional and would like to get involved and meet like-minded individuals, please sign up for our distribution list or join us for an event! I am looking forward to the rest of the year as well as future years with the Chamber. I am always open to conversations and constructive feedback. Please feel free to contact me at any time.

We’re on the ballot! Thursday morning at 10:30 a petition certification hearing was held in the Stephenson County Court of Judge Jeffries. At that time objections to the petitions could have been presented, but there were none. The court ruled that the petitions submitted were sufficient, and that the following proposition shall be submitted to the voters of the city of Freeport at the Nov. 8, 2016 general election: “Shall the City of Freeport Adopt the Managerial Form of Municipal Government?” Thanks to everyone involved in achieving this significant step in our journey to improve the future of Freeport! Before we attended the petition hearing, some committee members met with Roxanne Sosnowski, our legal counsel. Roxanne is with

the Rockford law firm of Barrick, Switzer, Long, Balsley & Van Evera. We have been very impressed with Roxanne’s support. She is very experienced in municipal law. We’re in good hands with Roxanne’s legal guidance. We have a great story to tell and we plan to tell it in many ways to many audiences! We met with the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 22 at Logan’s Bar & Grill. We are planning to meet with the Teachers Union and the Police Union. The Steering Team of the Committee to Change City Government (CCCG) will meet Thursday, August 25 at 7:30 a.m. at the Farm Bureau.

The logical audiences include service clubs, retirement communities, Senior Resource Center, Neighborhood Watch groups, and perhaps forums we plan and implement. We need a volunteer coordinator to join the Government and Community Relations Team to collect the names of people who want to get involved and then connect them with the people who need help. If you are interested, contact Joan Welt (815-541-1766, [email protected]) or Co-Chairs Pat Leitzen Fye (815-291-9000, [email protected]) or Mike Thompson (815-990-1692, [email protected]).Contact the following locations to become more involved. Stephenson County Farm Bureau, 210 W Spring Street, Freeport or the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce, 27 West Stephenson Street, FreeportIf you’d like to be added to the list of places for people to learn

more about the effort, contact Joan Welt at (815-541-1766, [email protected]). We are in the process of populating the Planning and Implementation Team. This team will work concurrently while the referendum campaign is underway. They will develop a plan for Managerial Form of Municipal Government implementation. The output of this team will be a very important part of our communications as we get closer to the election so that voters know more specifically what they are voting for. We want to be ready to go when the referendum passes. If you are interested, contact Co-Chairs Pat Leitzen Fye (815-291-9000, or [email protected]) or Mike Thompson (815-990-1692, or [email protected]). Collaborate Freeport is working to rebrand Freeport and the surrounding communities. City Centre Freeport is trying to revitalize downtown buildings and public space. The Journal-Standard’s Editorial Board decided to jump into the fray, too. They want to reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit that historically provided the base of Freeport’s local economy. They are hosting a “Shark Tank”-style competition called Freeport Fish Tank. The local newspaper launched

the effort with a front-page editorial Sunday, and organizers are accepting submissions through Sept. 9. “It is unusual for a newspaper to take on an economic development project,” the editorial said. “The normal route would be to write an editorial suggesting someone do this. We decided this idea had too much potential to wait for someone else to pick it up.” The contest is open to anyone who wants to start or expand a business or non-profit in Stephenson County. Five finalists

will be graded on online voting, a business plan and a public presentation Oct. 26 at The Wagner House in downtown Freeport. Three winners will receive cash prizes and donated services from area businesses. “I know there are tons of brilliant minds and creative ideas in the community of Stephenson County,” said Andra Taylor,The Journal-Standard Editorial Board community member. “This is your opportunity to pursue what you’ve been hesitant about, what you’ve been dreaming about or what you’ve

been waiting for. “This is a no-lose opportunity that at minimum will help draw you significantly closer to building your future business,” Taylor continued. “Don’t sit idle on the sidelines. Michael Jordan once said, ‘You miss 100% of the shots your don’t take!’ Let’s get involved and become a part of something great. Your destiny is calling you and greatness is upon you.” Here’s how to get involved.• Apply: Send a two-minute video, photograph of yourself and statement describing your ideas in 200 words or fewer [email protected] by Sept. 9.• Offer to help: If you’d like to volunteer as a mentor or donate a prize, please email [email protected].• Follow along: Watch for updates on at journalstandard.com/fishtank and facebook.com/freeportfishtank.

Sugar BOWL CeLeBrateS gRAND oPeNINg Angie Bauer started The Sugar Bowl Boutique in downtown Lena out of her love to create unique pieces to help create a personality for anyone’s home, and because she specializes in interior design, she brings a professional approach to designing spaces that reflect each individual customer. “The Sugar Bowl Boutique is several things in one,” said Bauer. “I repurpose furniture, I have a full line of chalk-type paint that is made here in the U.S., I have home décor and gifts, I carry a purse line and we do classes.” While discussing how she chooses a piece of furniture to “rescue” Bauer pointed out a bed frame with headboard and footboard painted to appear as faux cheetah. “That was a bed frame that someone dropped off, so I decided to play with it,” she said. “I was tired of just doing plain colors one day and had decided to do something fun with it when my seven-year-old, who just happens to absolutely love cheetahs, suggested I do a cheetah bed.”

The rest is fun furniture history and today the frame sits on boutique display room floor trimmed in forest green with cheetah spot design filling the open areas. “Sometimes I find pieces through garage sales or auctions or on the side of the road or in dumpsters,” Bauer said. “I like to work with real wood. I like to work with dove tails and I like to work with a good quality, but ugly piece.”She describes a good quality, but ugly piece as furniture that no one wants anymore, but she sees as having real potential for repurposing.

Chalk type paints The Sugar Bowl carries the full line of Heirloom Traditions chalk type paints. Chalk type paint is primarily used for painting furniture, although it can also be used for many other surfaces. It has amazing adhesion qualities, and can be applied to pretty much any furniture in pretty much any condition. That means no prep. No sanding, no need to remove the shiny varnish and chalk-painted pieces are easy to distress because

FReePoRT jAYCeeS To CLOSe LOCaL Chapter WIth Large DOnatIOn The Freeport Jaycees have served our local community for multiple decades. However, the struggle to attract young professionals to the service club has taken its toll on the membership over the years. Therefore, the Freeport Jaycees chapter will close this month by offering a final toast and social event to all past and current members on July 27 at the Wagner House located at 1 East Spring St. in Freeport IL. In celebration of all that the local Jaycees chapter has accomplished over the years, hour d’oeuvres and drinks will be provided at the event to all past and current members. Cocktail hour starts at 5 p.m. and there will be a brief presentation and toast at 6:00 p.m. The Jaycees board has decided continue their legacy of giving by donating $10,000 to an effort in our local community that we feel strongly aligns with core principals of the Jaycees organization. The donation of $10,000 will be provided to Collaborate Freeport. This support will include $5,000 for year 2 and $5,000 for year 3 of the multi-year initiative. Collaborate Freeport is a group of business leaders, government leaders, community development organizations, and passionate citizens that are coming together to brand and market the Freeport region. Part of the struggle with keeping the Jaycees going over the years was the loss of young professionals in our community. We believe that an investment in Collaborate Freeport is an investment in the overall vitality of our community. One of the main priority areas of the Collaborate Freeport Initiative is attracting young professionals into our community. The Freeport Jaycees are encouraging their members to bring their enthusiasm and ideas to other service clubs that are continue to serve our area. The cheese curd wagon, which the Jaycees are widely known for, was purchased by the Elks Club and will be utilized in the same capacity, to

earn funds to give back to the local community.

FreepOrt LIOnS take eyegLaSS COLLeCtIOn tO neW LeveL St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Freeport IL, has a very unique collection “box” for Freeport Lions Club to collect used eyewear to recycle. It looks like a wooden paddle with a wire basket fastened to the lower half, and hangs from one of the church walls in the vestibule by the church office, and contains a partial biblical quote from St. Matthew, chapter 11, verse 5, “…the blind receive sight…” Laura Diemer, Director of Communications at Aquin Catholic Schools, is also the music and youth coordinator at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. After buying the hanging basket at Hobby Lobby, she drew the words by hand using ink pens/Church parishioners regularly donate their used eye glasses and deposit them in the wall hanging.Because of these efforts, the Lions of Illinois Foundation located in Sycamore, Illinois, sorts thousands of pairs of collected eyeglasses to help visually impaired people around the world. There are a number of eyeglass collection points around Freeport, and normally are in the form of a cardboard box with the Lions Clubs International symbol on it. mOnrOe CLInIC nameD IN “100 gReAT CommuNITY hOSpItaL” rankIngS PART oF NATIoNWIDe CoNveRSATIoN Becker’s Hospital Review recently named Monroe Clinic among its “100 Great Community Hospitals.” “This list recognizes the important role community hospitals serve in our nation’s healthcare landscape. It’s compiled through Becker’s editorial team’s extensive research and review process. Our hospital’s inclusion on the list recognizes the collective dedication to healthcare excellence demonstrated by each of our team members and leadership,” said Mark Thompson, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Monroe Clinic. Hospitals considered for this list have 550 or fewer beds and are located in both suburban and rural areas across the nation. The editorial team works through a master list of facilities selected based on original research or national rankings from such organizations as iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades and CareChex to determine if the hospital is making continual strides to provide quality care. While there is no perfect measure of healthcare quality, Dr. Thompson explained how the data and research behind ‘100 Great Community Hospitals,’ as well as other rankings and recognitions, are part of an important conversation throughout the industry. “More than a pat on the back, it

can lead to information sharing and higher quality care for all patients. As for Monroe Clinic, it also offers encouragement to keep moving forward, keep improving and keep listening to the communities we serve,” said Dr. Thompson. Monroe Clinic Hospital was also named one of the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the nation by iVantage and received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades this year.

SCAPINo! By Frank Dunlop & jim Dale The play takes place around a dockside cafe in 1970s Naples, Italy, where the leading character, Scapino, devises a complex plot to help two pairs of lovers fight against parental opposition that, it turns out, may not actually exist. Scapino is a rapscallion, a fast-talking, quick-thinking scamp who cleverly manipulates and cajoles everyone into doing what Scapino intends them to do. Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale have created a non-stop comedy with slapstick, acrobatics and burlesque, and although ‘’Scapino’’ is not a musical, it is punctuated with songs that give the evening a zany and magical feel. “An Evening of sheer, unadulterated delight.”- Wall Street Journal july 13-22, 2017Some bawdy comedyApprox 2 hours
