Communication

From the Principal Here we are, almost at the end of another event-filled year at Brookvale. Our lovely school continues to grow and evolve; throughout the year we welcomed many new families and staff members and said goodbye to others. We have had many highlights, where our students have achieved great outcomes; academically, sporting and in the performing arts. I would like to thank our outstanding staff for being simply wonderful people! They, along with our beautiful students, make this school such a happy place to be. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated team, who every day go above and beyond their duties, always adding that little extra touch that makes a big difference and is commented on by many parents and visitors to our school. 2019 will see some changes; and sadly we say farewell to staff members Mark Gigli, Emma Groves, Alex Chen, Tony Fox and Ursula Halloway. Our volunteers are such an important help to the school; whether it is through the canteen, the library, literacy support, gardening, costume and prop making, fundraising events, the P&C, or in any other way. We appreciate your involvement and support, and are sincerely thankful for the difference you make. Next year, we will be increasing by one class; from fourteen to fifteen, and our number on roll will be approximately 360. The composition of our school will be: Kindergarten – 3 classes K/1 – 1 class Year 1 – 2 classes Year 2 – 3 classes Year 3 – 2 classes Year 4/5 – 3 classes Year 6 – 1 class We wish all our Year 6 leavers the very best as they transition to the next stage of schooling, high school! Students, we have prepared you well, and know that you will take the values of Brookvale PS with you; they will stand you in good stead throughout your lives as responsible and respectful citizens. I wish all our families a safe and happy holiday, and look forward to seeing you all when students return to school on Wednesday 30 January. Bev Maunder

We will miss all of them so much next year! This term has been our busiest of all with swimming, School Fair, Polar Express, Presentation Day, STEM Fair, Christmas concert and sneaky visit’s from Santa’s elves. Everyone had so much fun learning new skills at swimming. It was a busy two weeks but we all managed to try our personal best every day! We have also been going crazy for bees!! We love bees in Kindy and one of the things we’ve learnt is how important they are for our environment, growing food and making flowers beeeeautiful! Here are some photos from our last few weeks of Kindy.

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday! Mrs Dixon, Miss Goodearl and Mrs Groves

Year 1 News

Term 4 has been a very busy time for our Year 1 students. We loved our swimming lessons at the Aquatic Centre and all the staff and teachers were impressed with our efforts and behaviour. We had a wonderful day at the Technology Fair and our favourite activity was exploring virtual reality and programming the ozobots. Thank you to Mrs McArthur for the amazing STEM experiences that you have planned for us. Our Christmas item ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ was a resounding success. Our ability to work together as a team is proof that we are all ready for Year 2! Thank you to our wonderful parents who have been a fantastic support to our teachers this year. Merry Christmas and have a wonderful summer break.

Mrs Richardson, Ms Lohr and Mr Murray

Year 2 News aete and Reader Awards It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. We have had a fabulous time this term exploring our world and using STEM activities to engage us. Year 2 students also went swimming and our behaviour was exemplary. We loved the Year 6 fair and participated enthusiastically in the STEM fair activities. In class we were set STEM Christmas challenges that had us designing and constructing Christmas trees and shelves for elves. Some of us even made a parachute for Santa to use in delivering his presents. We hope you enjoy looking at the photos as we move closer to saying goodbye to 2018. The students and teachers in Year 2 thank you for your support and encouragement this year and wish everyone a very relaxing and safe festive season!

Stage 2 News

Stage 2 enjoyed the STEM Fair where they watched a drone fly and took turns at making it complete a flip. They programmed BeeBots and Ozobots as well as used electronic circuit kits for light and sound. There was so much to do and they will continue to explore this technology in their classrooms. 3/4G has been busy delivering Christmas cards. Every day they check the special Christmas post box that they created and sort the cards. It is one of the highlights of the day when they knock on the classroom door and Christmas good wishes are delivered. Stage 2 has been studying waste management as a part of their Geography unit. 3/4R took a leaf out of the War on Waste TV program and sorted through the waste collected at Stage 2 eating time. As you can see

from the photos below there was a lot to sort and think about: food waste, recycling and eliminating packaging. We are now fully into rehearsals for our Christmas Concert and are looking forward to performing this. We wish everyone a Happy Christmas.

Ms Thomson, Mr Gray and Mrs Roberts Stage 3 News How quickly time flies when you are having fun! Stage 3 has had a very busy end to 2018. Stage 3 participated in the Surf Education program at Freshwater Beach. It was great to see so many smiling faces catching waves on surf boards, learning CPR & first aid and playing games like beach cricket and flags. All teachers were very impressed with students’ ability to act responsibly and respectfully in our local area. We were very lucky to have perfect weather for our Stage 3 fair. We would like to thank all students for participating in the fair and the many parents who provided books, white elephant goods or cakes. We had a great time working as teams to create engaging, fun and challenging stalls and games for everyone. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did! On Tuesday 11 December, Year 6 went out for their big day out. Everyone stepped into their challenge zone and participated in sailing, paddle boarding and a high ropes course. It was an amazing day and so great to see everyone giving it their personal best. As the year comes to a close, we say goodbye to our fantastic Year 6 cohort. We will miss them and wish them all the best for Year 7 in 2019. Have a lovely, safe holiday break. We look forward to seeing you next year.

Miss Natalie Kovacs & Mr Mark Gigli P&C News

Our P&C met for the final time in 2018 on 11 December. We reflected on a positive year over someChristmas nibbles and champagne noting how fantastic it was to see the school in the Manly Daily last Saturday for the STEM Fair.

The meeting heard about the successful Trivia Night held in November with overwhelmingly positive feedback. The event raised over $2,000 and provides a great template for a similar event in 2019. Other

recent fundraising efforts were also discussed with tea towel and drink bottle orders also completed, with drink bottles to be delivered before end of term.

The P&C finishes 2018 in a very positive financial state, having donated over $25,000 and with significant reserves allocated for playground equipment once progress is made with our new School Hall.

A broad discussion took place related to parent involvement in the school via P&C and Performing Arts. It was agreed that a key focus of our first meeting in 2019 will be to look at whether we should better align or merge committees to simplify our calendar of events, key goals and improve outcomes for all. Invitations to the meeting on 19 February will be sent to representatives of the Band, Choir and Dance groups.

A range of new initiatives will be trialled in 2019 for football parking, with Sign Up Genius to be used to help encourage and engage volunteers. With 11 games, the first being on 16th February, this will be an early focus for the P&C. A new calendar has been produced which lists all current planned activities. This will assist in planning and coordination.

Thank you to all members and volunteers who have assisted in 2018. Your assistance is genuinely appreciated and we look forward to a successful and collaborative 2019.
