“We are excited to move on”

To some, four years may seem like an eternity, but as valedictorian Randi Peterson reminded her fellow students, “In the grand scheme of life, four years isn’t much, but a lot can happen in that time.”

Salutatorian Pete Gorski, echoed Peterson’s sentiments. “ It’s been four long, fun, tiring, exciting, difficult, insightful, and important years of high school. At this point, it’s time for a nice sigh of relief and gratitude. Our journey of high school is officially over, much to the pleasure of some and the sadness of others.”

“We came into high school as scared, timid freshmen. Everything was new. Now, our last year is over and it has slowly sunk in that we will be leaving each other and everything we’ve known behind, and we are a little sad. But then we look into the future, to college, the military, a career, or whatever plans you have, and we are excited to move on,” stated Peterson.

Before presiding over his final commencement exercises, retiring principal Dave Johnson was presented with a plaque by Superintendent John Burkey thanking him for his years of service. “He doesn’t like to be the center of attention, and has come up with several excuses as to why he could not attend board meetings to receive his plaque. But, he has no choice today—he can’t escape now”, Burkey said.

Johnson had a tough time saying goodbye to his graduating students, most of whom were born the year he became the school’s principal 17 years ago. And for his last time, Johnson very proudly presented the Huntley High School graduating class to Board members, faculty, families and friends.

Congratulations and best wishes to the Huntley High School Class of 2013!

Middle School Academic Teams Particpate in

Annual Scholastic Bowl

Middle school students from across Northern Illinois met

on May 9 at Marengo Community Middle School to test

their knowledge in the 26th annual Scholastic Bowl

Invitational Tournament.

The challenging three-hour competition brought more than

100 students from 18 area schools together to compete

and answer four rounds of questions within a thirty second

time limit, on subjects such as English, math, language

arts, social studies and science, with each round

increasing in difficulty. Each school team consisted of six

students and two alternatives.

Register for School Today

If your child will be attending school next year and is not

yet registered, we ask that you please do so as soon as

possible. Returning student registration is completed

online with instructions that were mailed to current

families in April.

In-person registration is required for those who are new

to District 158 including Kindergarteners and can be

completed at 650 Academic Drive in Algonquin.

Contact the Registration Office at (847) 659-6147 with

any questions.

Competition for the annual event was extremely tough this year as Marlowe Middle School’s team became one of three

tied for first before winning the event with a “sudden death” playoff question.

“They were fantastic - cool and calm under pressure!” said Mrs. Darcy Patrick, Marlowe’s academic team sponsor.

Trophies were awarded to the top three teams: Marlowe Middle School, and Crystal Lake’s Lundahl Middle School and

Bernotas Middle School. Heineman Middle School also competed and ended the day in fourteenth place.

Congratulations to Marlowe’s team members: Jimmy Yolich*, Shivam Vashi*, Jacob Gebka, Matt Wolch, Henry Haase*,

Xavier Lee, Sarah Hart, Bob Chen, Pranav Yandamuri, Ayush Agarwal, Harini Marchadi*, Allison Stoner*, Cameron

Chrest*, Sal Sciascia, Lucas Myint*, and Conor Krohne*. * First place team members

VOLUNTEERS: Important Role in Education

Parents, grandparents, retirees, and members of the

community play a very important role in the education

process when they share their time, knowledge and

abilities with students by volunteering at school.

Each school year offers a wide range of opportunities to

volunteer including: school picture day, reading helpers,

book fairs, vision & hearing screenings, and much more.

Contact Eileen Delahanty, Volunteer Coordinator at

(847) 659-6152, by email at [email protected]

or visit the webpage at www.district158.org/volunteers for

more information.

Students Raise Funds for Annual Heart Program

Giving back to the community through participation in the annual Jump

Rope for Heart (JRFH) program is one lesson students look forward to

each year.

The program, sponsored by the American Heart Association, isn’t just

good exercise and great fun—it’s educational too as students learn about

the lifelong health benefits of daily physical activity and the importance of

a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The

events also promote teamwork, build school spirit, and give students the

opportunity to contribute to their community.

According to the American Heart Association, heart and blood vessel

diseases are America’s No. 1 killer, claiming about 930,000 lives a year --

a life every 34 seconds. The funds, raised by students through

sponsors, provide lifesaving research into heart and blood vessel

diseases and also support the development of educational materials for

schools and members of the community.

This year, the program took on a

whole new meaning for Chesak

student Chance Sherman and his

grandparents Bill and Marcia Elke.

In March 2012, Bill was a heart

transplant recipient.

Bill and Marcia attended Chesak’s

JRFH program to express their

appreciation for the role D158

plays in saving lives.

Two Heineman Girls Set School Records,

Earn Medals in State Track & Field Meet

Samantha Heustis, 8th grader, is the first girl in

Heineman’s history to ever advance to the 100M dash

finals and place for a medal. In addition, she also

qualified for the state meet in the 200M dash, broke

the HMS Girl’s Track and Field 200M dash school

record running a time of 26.8 seconds, and was also

the anchor of the state qualifying 4x100M relay team,

which went undefeated in the regular season.

Seventh grader Rhian Whitfield set a new Heineman

school record of 8’1” at Sectionals and continued that

success at State. Her jump of 7’9” at State earned her

an 8th place medal, the first pole vault medal in the

school’s history. Rhian also ran in the semifinals of

the 100m hurdles at State, finishing 11th overall.

Unprecedented Year for Journalism Students

Whether it be The Voice newspaper, HuntleyVoice.com, or the Chieftain yearbook, Huntley High School journalism students have much to be proud of.

After putting together a list of accolades and awards received this year, Mr. Dennis Brown, Journalism Advisor for the school said, “Really, this is an unprecedented year as far as the kids’ accomplishments.”

Senior Marek Makowski was named the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s (IJEA)

Illinois Journalist of the Year.

Senior Michael Geheren was named to the IJEA’s All-State Journalism Team for the second

consecutive year.

Running Program Inspires Health and Confidence for Girls

Combating self-esteem issues, depression, and even body image concerns in girls as young as 3rd grade is serious

business. This is especially true when: “42% of 1st -3rd grade girls want to be thinner; 53% of 13 year old girls are

unhappy with their bodies; 40% of girls start dieting by the age of 10; and by age 15, girls are twice as likely as boys to

become depressed.”1

By teaming up with Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois (GOTRNWIL), several schools across the district are giving

girls the tools needed to deal with these very real issues in a fun, non-competitive environment where every girl is

celebrated for her unique self.

The GOTR program combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with healthy living education while instilling self-

esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training.

At each of the District 158 school sites, several staff members donate their time to the after school program in an effort to

make a difference in a young girls’ life.

District 158 participating schools include Martin, Leggee, and Conley at the elementary level (girls in grades 3-5), and

Heineman and Marlowe at the middle school level (girls in grades 6-8).

While most sites in Northwest Illinois have between 15-30 girls participating, this year with a total of 83 girls, Martin

Elementary School officially had the largest number of participants than the entire DeKalb County and Winnebago

County chapters combined! Additionally, District 158 had the largest showing of girls out of the more than 500 girls

participating at the 5K event held in mid May at Woodstock North High School.

For more information about the Girls on the Run Northwest Illinois program, visit www.GOTRNWIL.org.

Congratulations girls!
