WHAT ABOUT DEGREES?

Learning for learning's sake is a luxury few can afford.

Learning needs to translate into opportunities.

Strengthen and complement (not replace) existing institutions

Teacher training in South Africa and Australia

PATHWAYS TO FORMAL CREDIT

ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION

Open sourcing accreditation

Fill the gaps

Involve the community

School of Webcraft

I have been mentoring young folks who want to learn Web design and what I have discovered is that there are literally NO college level curricula in my area that would teach them Open Web technologies. Their options are either to learn Web technologies that are 4-5 years behind what's out now, or to take a degree in computer science. I would like to see this project succeed because I believe there is a great need for it.

SCHOOL OF WEBCRAFT

Training & certification

Free & open community curriculum

Project based peer-learning

Mashing up the open web

Assessment of hacker's disposition

First courses start September 2010

SCHOOL OF WEBCRAFT

Ultimate environment to learn open standards and web development

New courses include Introduction to HTML5 and Building the Social Web

for novice web developers and for the uber elite

using current and up to date technologies

SCHOOL OF WEBCRAFT

Four iterations(12-15 courses)in 2011 (double number of courses each time

Provide assessment not just for technology skills, but also for "hacker's habits"

Addresses a real need - employers are frustrated that existing degrees or certificates don't say much about the quality of a web developer

Aim to provide access to high quality web development education (that leads to real jobs) is expensive in many parts of the world

DIGITIAL JOURNALISM- KEIO UNIVERSITY

Keio University course led by Joi Ito

open to P2PU students to participate and collaborate with the Keio Uni students

Exciting experiment- demonstrates high levels of motivation, participation and collaboration of P2PU students

P2PU META COURSE

aims to improve the P2PU course experience for both participants and organizers. 6-week hands-on workshop on how to develop and run an on line course

practical guidance on using a set of freely available software applications and services

Participants work on their own course which they can offer as new p2pu course in the future

Helps future course facilitators reflect on how to best encourage, facilitate and support open social learning.

WHAT NEXT ?

New 6 week cycle due start in September 2010

P2PU aims to double no of courses each cycle.

New collaborators- universities, non profit org, industry etc

Accreditation

Research and evaluation of P2PU

THE FINAL WORD
