We are the guardian of a Games movement in Scotland that has seen some of Scotland’s most memorable and inspiring sporting achievements, in one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world.

Scotland has attended and won medals at every Commonwealth Games since 1930, hosted the Games three times in 1970, 1986 and 2014 and developed the Commonwealth Youth Games concept, hosting the inaugural Games in 2000.

In November 2007, supported by our partners, Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government, CGS won the bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Held in July 2014, they were publically acknowledged as the ‘best Games ever’. Team Scotland also enjoyed its best ever Commonwealth Games performance, winning an impressive 53 medals including 19 gold, to finish fourth on the medal table.

The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport Games in which Scots get to compete under the Scotland flag and it is the pinnacle of the Scottish sporting pathway for so many of our member sports and athletes. Team Scotland’s participation in the Games also enjoys huge support from the Scottish public, as shown by our market research surveys.

VISION

Team Scotland and the Commonwealth Games, inspiring more Scots to be physically active and successful in the sporting arena.

MISSION

Use our unique position in Scottish sport to maximise the benefits for Scotland, our member sports and athletes by:

n Enabling Team Scotland athletes to perform to their potential at the Commonwealth Games/Youth Games and specifically to deliver our best ever overseas Games results in 2018.

n Leading and connecting key stakeholders.

n Playing an active role in the work of the Commonwealth Games Federation, promoting the brand and its values.

Scotland Limited and comprises 28 member sports. We are heavily dependent on voluntary input for the delivery of our services, including preparation programmes and team management along with partnership support from member sports and other external agencies. Our funding is a mixture of public (Government, sportscotland), and private support (sponsorship and fundraising) and investments, with in-kind support making a substantial contribution to off-set the cost of our activities.

Our last strategic planning cycle 2011–2015, brought to a conclusion a 12-year period encompassing the successful bidding, hosting and participation in a home Games.

We now look to the future with renewed confidence and a clear vision of how we will build on the strong platform from Glasgow 2014. However we operate in a dynamic environment and we must keep abreast of the challenges that lie ahead and grasp new opportunities that will ensure we continue to play a leading role in the Scottish and international sporting landscape and achieve our ambitious targets.

With that in mind, I am delighted to present our new strategic plan for 2016-2023 which covers the next two Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022 and Youth Games in 2017 and 2021.
