Committee on Animal Research and Ethics (CARE) The main focus of discussion at the Spring 1997 meeting of CARE was the logistics of the initial

segment of an educational video project which the Committee intends to procedure. The primary purpose in making the video(s) is to make it available to high school psychology and science classes to enhance student appreciation and understanding of scientific psychology in general, and the importance of animal research in psychology in particular. Thus, the format of the material will be on that is most conductive to integration into classroom lessons, and in keeping with this plan will consist of 5-7 minute segments which will highlight the importance of animal research in psychology. The purpose of such educational material is not just to counter misinformation about animal research and to offset and reverse the often adverse, hostile, and incorrect assumptions and attitudes towards animal research, propagated by groups opposed to the use of animals in research and teaching, but also to educate the public about psychological science, to foster interest in psychological research issues and to promote accurate understanding of the profession. Earlier this Spring CARE received funding from the APA Council of Representatives for the production of an initial pilot segment of this video-tape, in the upcoming year. Both current and past members will be involved in the production of this educational material which will be first distributed through the Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPPS).

Other on-going projects that CARE reviewed at its recent meeting included: (1) finalizing the document entitled, "'Guidelines for the Use of Animals in School Science Behavior Projects" which will also be forwarded to TOPPS for incorporation into the document "Ethical Guidelines for the Teaching of Psychology in Secondary Schools." (2) reviewing plans for the APA Convention this year as well as future Convention programming. During the 1997 APA Annual Convention in Chicago, a series of three talks based on the theme, "Linking Animal and Human Behavior,'' that were developed by CARE and co-sponsored by BSA and Division 25, will be presented. This presentation will be publicized in the "Focus on Science" literature and will be co-listed by Divisions 3,6, and 28. CARE will also be co-listed on a Psi Chi address being presented by the current Chair of CARE, Roger K. R. Thompson, Ph.D. The Committee decided that it would continue with this theme and format for convention programming in the years to come, thereby continuing to forge better ties with relevant divisions, as well as making animal research more accessible to the whole psychological science community.
