Committed to His mission; connected to His world | ii iii | Committed to His mission; connected to His world

I am very thankful to God as I write this piece. God is good.

The Bible says in Psalms 73, verse 1: “Surely, God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.” As I look back over the past few years, I can honestly say, “God has been good to NEGST. God is good to AIU.”

It is now sixteen months since we officially became Africa international University. As I look back to that wonderful day on the 4th March when President Kibaki awarded the AIU charter, I say “We give all the glory to Jesus.” That day will always be a testimony to God’s goodness. For this reason the Governing Council has approved and declared 4th March as AIU day. On this day each year we will celebrate the anniversary of the university.

On 4th November last year, we launched the capital campaign to raise Ksh. 800 million over five years. On that night, the Lord gave us more than we imagined. It was amazing and we thank God that we managed to kick off the journey of faith with donations of over Kshs.23 million that night. About Ksh. 5.5 million more has been donated since the launch. More work has to be done to meet the full target. This year the focus of the capital campaign is on raising Ksh. 200,000,000 (two hundred million Kenya Shillings) for the new Leah Ngini Centre. The modern four-storied building will have a cafeteria to seat 200 people, coffee shop, student lounge and offices, bookshop, lecture theatres, ICT centre and other amenities. I warmly invite you to join hands together

with us to raise the funds for this noble venture.

Excellent facilities contribute to a good education. The Leah Ngini Centre is part of the first phase of the university physical facilities Master plan. The plan provides for new undergraduate students housing, academic buildings, gymnasium, and sports facilities. It also creates opportunities for kingdom investors to partner with the university in developing new facilities and business services.

The Governing Council has had the opportunity to review our financial statements for the past year; and they do capture the reality of the successful implementation of the various institutional and financial strategies. A consolidated surplus of over Kshs.40 million, a 144% increase over Kshs.17 million in 2009 is a testimony of God’s faithfulness upon AIU even as we embark on the journey ahead as a fully-fledged University. To God be all honour and glory!

As Governors, our commitment is that AIU will preserve the NEGST ethos of training quality leaders. Our desire is that AIU preserves a legacy of not just quality education but also education with passion and integrity. We do not doubt that our God who has brought us this far will enable us to achieve our desires and goals, as we rely on Him.

At the Co-operative Bank, we have chosen as our theme for this year, Joshua 1:3 – “I will give you every place where you set your foot.” This is my prayer for AIU as well. God bless all of us and God bless AIU.

Dr. Gideon Muriuki MBS

Message from chair governing council

We are on the verge of Africa’s Renascence. Six out of the ten fastest growing economies are on the continent. The democratic space is expanding and the demands for just, transparent and accountable governments are loud and clear. The growth of the church has migrated to the global south with Africa witnessing the fastest growth. With the prospect of prosperity there is the reality of poor governance, lack of ethics, conflict and war, poverty and moral degradation. These are the realities of Africa that Africa International University must embrace to be relevant at a time of continental evolution and global integration.

In cognizance of the continent’s rapid economic, social and cultural transformation, new educational programmes are at the implementation stage. Programmes in; Business, Commerce and Entrepreneurial Studies. Programmes in; Values, Ethics, Law and Governance. Programmes in; Cultural and Social, Community and Humans Development Studies. Programmes in ICT, Science and Technology.

AIU is embarking on an ambitious diversified integration development plan alongside the development of new programmes that will address emerging African realities. Our master plan includes a student and community center, sports and recreation facilities, state

of the classroom and student accommodation, e-learning education delivery systems, conferencing facilities and a business park. In October we will break ground for the Leah Ngini Center that will house learning, recreation and commercial facilities for students and the community

To achieve these plans the university is rekindling the Transforming Hope Capital campaign to raise funds to make the next phase of development of AIU a reality. Please join us in prayer and giving as we trust God to deliver our plans.

As we look forward to the challenges before us we must thank God for the present and past. We are privileged to be part of God’s purpose by training Christ-centered leaders to transform God’s people and world. As you graduate and move on to the ‘real world’ you will face the realities of Africa head on. By Him and thought Him AIU has developed you into leaders of integrity ready for God’s purposes. You are the leaders of today that will ignite Africa’s renascence through Christ, you are the leaders that will ground the exploding church in the south in the word of God and you are the leaders that will keep the flam of Christ a light in the corners of the world. All this is possible if you continue to be committed to His word and connected to His world. Fare thee well.

Committed to His mission; connected to His world | iv v | Committed to His mission; connected to His world

The annual pilgrimage of graduation is an academic rite that brings together the past, present, and future. Every graduation day enables us to look back and thank God for our graduates, their years as students, their growth and development, and more. For the institution, graduation day provides an occasion to remember and celebrate God’s faithfulness, in many and diverse ways, in bringing it this far.

The present lends itself to graduation as an opportunity and season for jubilation and celebration. Our graduates have every reason to be jubilant in their accomplishments and to rejoice with family and friends for the successful completion of their studies. From the institutional perspective, graduation day represents another milestone for the university, as it sends out yet another set of graduates to serve God and society with excellence and integrity. It is a pointer to and measure of the university’s vision of seeing “Christ-centred leaders educated to transform God’s people and God’s World.”

Every graduation event has to it a certain element of a journey beginning, a commencement. It has this future orientation and viewpoint because in granting “the power to read” there is recognition that education is a life-long process. In addition, graduation sows a future seed in our hearts so we look forward to what the graduates will become and accomplish in the years ahead.

If quality education is a life-long development process, so is the university itself. We have occasion each graduation day to anticipate the university’s growth and development. During the course of the next academic year, AIU will develop and launch new undergraduate programmes in entrepreneurship, finance and accounting, human resource management, etc. A new Master of Arts in Child Development and Family studies will be offered. Along with these a long awaited PhD in theology will be offered, with concentrations in systematics, theology and culture, and theology and development. This growth in academic programmes will be accompanied by development of physical facilities.

So graduation is a moment that weaves the lives of graduates with the life of the institution in past, present, and future time. This is fitting, for as St. Paul would say of the Corinthian Church, “You are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.” 2 Corinthians 3:2 (TNIV)

The entire AIU family is thankful for our worthy graduates, the class of 2012. Thank you for being an integral part of AIU. We rejoice with you on this day and thank God for you. Congratulations on your great and meaningful accomplishment. As you go out to serve God in our ever-changing world, we charge you to do so as one “Committed to His mission, Connected to His World.”

The institute for the Study of African Realities (ISAR) is a constituent school of Africa International University, whose mission is to transform persons, churches, and African societies toward greater realization of Jesus’ vision of a just and peaceful community by means of formal and non-formal educational initiatives. The programs of ISAR are designed to train trainers, form effective leaders of integrity and to empower mwananchi. This is achieved through an interactive process incorporating aggressive listening to diverse voices, interdisciplinary research, biblical-theological reflection, application to African realities and design of delivery systems that work in diverse African contexts. The Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and The Doctor of Ministry Programs were both successfully launched in ISAR and have now moved to the School of Professional Studies and NEGST respectively.

The leadership development initiatives undertaken by ISAR have a focus on serving the Church of Christ and are designed to result in the following outcomes:

♠ Creation of Christian values for nation building by preparing and nurturing leaders who will participate in the strengthening of the economic and political systems in their nations.

♠ Provision of evangelical scholarship centred on the complete truthfulness of the Bible as the written Word of God and the pivotal significance of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

♠ Interdisciplinary studies articulating the values and wisdom of Christian world view as it impacts every sphere of knowledge and dimension of African experience.

♠ Research and writing from African scholars to nourish minds and hearts.

To this end, ISAR is offering the following post-graduate or short courses in the coming year.

a. Law, Theology and Leadership

b. Governance, Law and Theology

c. Theology, Economics and Politics

d. Leadership (Business Management; Governance; Organizational)

e. Child Development and Family Studies.

f. Youth Studies and Community Development.

Constituent Schools Constituent SchoolsAs we look back to the past year, we can truly say that God has been gracious and faithful to his work here at NEGST. As a School, our student intake has increased and we continue to grow. We would like to thank God for his bountiful blessings and to say to our entire students, thank you for choosing to do your theological and ministerial training at NEGST. As the Lord lives and as He continues to give us his wisdom and grace, we would not relent in training men and women of integrity, who are committed to God’s mission and God’s world to ensure there is equity and social justice for all.

In order to achieve our educational goals to train men and women for the Church and society and to empower and increase faculty capacity in institutions of Christian higher education on the continent, NEGST for the last six years has offered a PhD program in Biblical and Translating Studies. Last year we launched two more doctoral programs, a PhD in Intercultural Studies. The PhD in Intercultural studies has three tracks—Missions, Islamic and World Christianity. We also commenced a Doctor of Ministry program in Peace Building and Reconciliation. The Doctor of Ministry is an advanced professional theological degree for pastors and other Christian leaders in Church, non-governmental institutions and mission agencies.

This year, we are launching another PhD degree in Theology. This degree has three concentrations—Systematic, Culture and Development. All of NEGST doctoral programs are

of excellent academic quality, innovative, relevant, and contextual to address the needs of the Church and society in Africa. The programs are designed for those who would like to pursue rigorous academic research and writing, teaching careers, serve in a Christian Mission organizations and the Church. The objectives of these new programs are to equip students with competencies and skills required to be an effective servant of Christ in the Church and society by producing Christians of integrity and good character, who are innovative, analytical, critical and creative thinkers who can reflect theologically and biblically on the pertinent issues facing the Church and societies in Africa.

Besides its high academic quality, the program is flexible and it can fit in the schedules of those who do not have time to be full-time students. These modular PHD programs allow a student to attend class two-weeks in every quarter and do his class work the rest of the quarter.

Our existing Masters and Bachelor of Theology programs continue to be the best in theological education on the Continent. If you plan to study theology, then NEGST is the school of choice for you. At NEGST, you would get the best theological education on the continent and study under our excellent international faculty. Our graduates are found all over the continent and the world serving the Lord and they are all having effective ministries and transforming the lives of the people they are serving. Do not wait any longer! Join us now!

School of Professional

Studies

“Imagine you are behind the counter in your own business establishment and a person enters your store, whom do you see?” This is the question a teacher posed to his Business class. Different answers came up: “A customer, a business opportunity, a time to make money, etc.” “Good answers”, said the teacher “but it is unfortunate that none of you saw the image of God in this person, one to be honest with, one whose life you may change for good, an opportunity to minister the word of God in your profession as a business person. The core to Christian business is to first see the image of God in people.”

A classroom exchange like this continues to motivate me to serve as Dean of the School of Professional Studies—a School that is not just about the professions but about life and the Kingdom of God. We provide a top notch curriculum that is not only on the cutting edge of the professions, but also built on solid Christian foundations to form students that are not only professionals who happen to be Christians but actual Christian professionals in their areas.

The top of our priority list is a commitment to students. We believe that a major component

in ensuring lasting transformative learning is through faculty-student interaction. Our low faculty-to-student ratios in the school ensure that students receive the personal attention they deserve. This helps them to get the maximum out of their academic workload in a way that builds their skills, and competences which they require to make a difference in the lives of others and in their professions. The School offers diverse programs in Business, Psychology and Counseling, Education, Translation and Leadership at both graduate and undergraduate levels. These programs are unique in that they are overtly relevant to the contextual realities of Africa in its global context and flexible enough to meet the changing needs and interests of students.

As Dean of the School of Professional Studies let me encourage you to consider studying at Africa International University where students come first, where our programs are responsive to your needs and the needs of your community, where we empower you to make a real difference in the lives of others as you transform the professions and where the curriculum is firmly built on Christian values and truth.

Grace Aflame Network is a Facebook family of believers drawn from all walks of life; from different churches, different professions, and different youth groups. The network

was founded by a team of able leaders namely; Kelvin Talam, Kevin Gitonga (AIU), David Kim, Assumpta Kahiro, Deborah Langat, and Gloria Kitai, who together oversee the activities of the group. The focus of the network is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ with the vision of adhering to the singularity of the gospel that informs men of their reconciliation in Christ Jesus.

Grace Aflame Network exists to promote and proclaim the gospel of grace and peace and its relevance to the human race.

Grace Aflame Network is not a movement but a network of believers who have been consumed with the

passion of knowing God and making him known. What began as a series of fellowships to bring brethren from different churches together soon became a large network connecting believers from all walks of life, starting with the young people and

growing to include pastors and missionaries. The network connects believers all over the globe who are like-minded in proclaiming the gospel. It also serves as a network of friends who minister to one

another with the gospel of grace and peace. The use of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and blogs means they have been able to draw a global audience.

Making use of various connections made through the network, members of Grace Aflame have participated in missions to high schools, churches and villages all over Kenya, with the sole mission of declaring the gospel of grace and peace. For example, since 2009 they have been involved in a successful series of missions in Kericho, Nairobi, Eldoret and Meru. They have also organised an annual conference to bring together friends from different cities dubbed the ‘glory and grace’ conference.

Grace Aflame Network recently conducted a mission to Burundi which was arranged by a Facebook friend. The group choose to go to Burundi because of the connection with Kenyan friends living in Burundi and the relative political peace there that allows the proclamation of the gospel of Christ. The members of the Facebook group raised money, prayed, and connected the members of the group who were going to Burundi with correspondents. Four people from the Facebook group went to Burundi from April 1-7 to minister to a group of youths from different churches during the Easter holidays. They were Henry Ngungi (Diploma Christian Ministries, AIU), Kevin Gitonga (Diploma Christian Ministries, AIU), Lizzie Koka and Jenniffer Mungai. The mission was dubbed ‘The harvest of the cross’ and involved a series of conferences, worship nights and church visitations which saw a multitude of people expressing their passion to God. During this trip over 100 people gave their lives to Christ. According to Kevin Gitonga, one of the major challenges the faced was language, “Kenyans are more social while Burundians are reserved”. The group also faced cultural challenges.

The group shares daily devotions and encouraging scriptures through their Facebook page, Twitter handle and BlogSpot.

Esther G. Njuguna, 22-years old is the firstborn in a family of seven siblings. She is a first year undergraduate student at Africa

International University (AIU), pursuing Business Administration. This young lady is committed and zealous about working with people. Her being in AIU is truly miraculous. Though she is still new in the university, this has not hindered her from serving the AIU community. She is a dedicated Sunday school teacher and heartily says that she has a passion to develop children who will learn to be independent early in their future. She has also joined a youth group at AIU and a group meant to work with a new organization known as Serve the City that aims to impact the lives of needy people within Nairobi, such as prisoners and orphans.

Esther’s family were victims of Kenya’s 2007-2008 post-election violence. Her father, who had been working as an ordinary businessman at a centre known as Cheptiret in Eldoret, had his entire business destroyed. Her mother, who earned a meagre income from her daily business in the marketplace had a two-week old baby and was thus weak. This was an extremely difficult time for her family. Esther, together with the other six children and her parents, were forced to live in a

small tent at

Eldoret

Showground. It was a very cold, rainy season and water would often flood into the tents, but they had no choice but to remain there.

Esther was due to join form three in January, 2008. However she was unable to take up her place due to lack of school fees and spent the following months living in the showground. During this period, Esther would spend most of her time in her local World Wide Gospel Church, Eldoret, either praying or cleaning the church surroundings.

She experienced a miracle in September, 2009 when she received a check to pay for her school fees enabling her to join form three at Wareng High School, Eldoret in the third term. During this term, both parents were jobless so there was little money for meals at home. Her dad continued to suffer from post-traumatic stress and remained unemployed. Esther would therefore go to school and at the same time use her talent for hair-plaiting at the IDP grounds to earn some money to help feed her family.

Alongside all the tough struggles, she also had to undergo an operation for an umbilical Hernia. She was in much pain but had to walk 8km daily to and from school since the family could not afford transport. Despite everything, Esther managed to score a mean grade of C+ in her form four national exams. In Esther’s view, she owes it all to the Almighty God. She had always wanted to join a university or college, nonetheless this was just a dream since she could not even meet the expense of a computer college that offered full courses for Ksh. 2,500 yet she really wished to.

However, Esther’s path to a brighter future opened up the day Rev. Grace Uteri together with pastor Rev. Wangila from AIU were invited to her local church for a revival. She got to interact with Rev. Grace who informed her about AIU scholarships and gave her forms to fill in. Esther did this, and asked a few questions about the courses offered at AIU, yet in her mind she knew that joining a university institution could barely become a reality. Hardly two weeks after submitting the forms, she received an admission letter for AIU with a scholarship for her tuition fees from Christian Leaders in Africa (CLA), an organization that partners with AIU. She was therefore able to join AIU in September, 2011.

Esther’s family cannot provide for her university education since the little amount they get is used to feed the large family. Her scholarship covers only the tuition fees; she therefore hopes that seeking to cover other expenses such as food and rent will not disrupt her studies and attendance. Esther says that in everything, she has learnt that one’s family cannot be the only source of provision; one can still succeed through help that comes totally from an outsider. Therefore, it is her future desire to continue helping others in society. Also, for her, it’s all about God. He is her greatest sustainer and she wants to serve him all days of her life. Her favorite bible verse that keeps her strong is Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. “

Africa International University (AIU)DACB @

The Dictionary of African Christian Biography (DACB), is an international project that is producing an online database of biographies of individuals whose stories are essential to understanding the birth and growth of the church in Africa. These individuals include Africans, missionaries, clerics, and lay people from all walks of life, throughout all of Africa, from the time of Jesus to the present, all Christian denominations included.

The DACB is the vision of a man named Jonathan Bonk, the founding director of the project, who realized that there was a lack of information about the key African figures who were instrumental in the birth and growth of the African church.

In August 2011, Project Manager Michele Sigg moved to Nairobi with her family (husband Sam, son Johan, daughters Annie and Catherine) for a year. During this time, she has worked to install an office for the DACB at Africa International University (AIU) and to create a network of institutes actively engaged in oral history research on African Christian figures.

At AIU, the DACB is under the umbrella of the newly inaugurated Centre for World Christianity (CWC) directed by Dr. Mark Shaw. In the list of goals included in the CWC’s five- year strategic plan, the eighth goal is “to help take the Dictionary of African Christian Biography to the next level by facilitating a network of partner institutions in Africa (at least ten), establishing an annual conference on the DACB,

initiating a student prize for the best biography of the year, formalizing the partnership between AIU and DACB, and generating 100 articles per year.”

In April 2012, DACB and CWC co-sponsored an ecumenical history conference. The theme for the conference was, “Telling our Story; African Christians, African Church, and African Society.” Thirty-seven individuals, both faculty and students, from several local institutions participated, including representatives from St. Paul’s University, Daystar, Nairobi International School of Theology, Tangaza, Hekima, Africa Nazarene University, and Pan African Christian University. During the seminar, when asked what conference was all about, Mrs. Sigg stated, “It is an ecumenical gathering of people interested in the history of African Christianity and who realize the importance of African Christian history for academia and for the church in encouraging the faithful and teaching our children about those saints who have gone before us.” Dr. Paul Kollman, a lecturer at Tangaza College, had this to say about the seminar, “This is the kind of meeting that can inspire and motivate those who care about African Christianity to tell and treasure the stories of those who preceded us in faith”.

Anyone can take part in the DACB project, by writing biographies. Guidelines for writing are available online at http://www.dacb.org/guidelines-writers.html. Writers can also or submit a story directly using the DACB-Wiki site at http://www.dabc.org/wiki/. http://www.dabc.org/wiki/

Transforming Hope Capital campaign is a strategic, life-changing fundraising initiative for the Africa International University. It is a project that will make positive change to our great continent and her peoples.

AIU launched the Transforming Hope Capital Campaign in November 2011 to raise Ksh 800 million (10 million dollars) in the next five years to provide much needed capital for new construction, scholarships, endowments and academic programs. The target for the first five years is Ksh 500 million (6.25 million dollars) which will be raised in three phases.

1. FIRST PHASE

Ksh 200 million (2.5 million dollars) will be raised for the construction of the Leah Ngini Center at the current campus grounds. The Center will provide classrooms, faculty workspace, student services/recreation space and valuable community and corporate connection.

2. SECOND PHASE

Ksh 100 million (1.25 million dollars) will be raised for Scholarship and Charter developments; these goals represent support for the core of the institution and much needed resources to satisfy the provision of charter by the Government of Kenya. They address the urgent need to fund new academic programs that AIU wants in place in the next two academic years.

3. THIRD PHASE

Ksh 200 million (2.5 million dollars) will be raised for the Endowment Fund to ensure the AIU is on a financial footing for the wider goals of expansion for the next fifteen years.

Why is this so important? Why build another university?

Here is our answer: God has a future for Africa and wants Africans to flourish in their relationships with Him and with each other. We desire to be part of God’s purpose by training Christ-centered leaders to transform God’s people and world. AIU is steadfast in producing leaders of integrity for God’s purposes. As a university in the heart of Africa, with Africa on its heart, we are committed to His Mission and Connected to His World.

Join us to transform our continent and give hope to the world. Be a transformer and giver of hope by being part of the Transforming Hope capital campaign.

AIU is embarking on an ambitious diversified integration development plan alongside the development of new programmes that will address emerging African realities. Our mater plan includes a student and community center, sports and recreation facilities, state of the classroom and student accommodation, e-learning education delivery systems, conference facilities and a business park.

In October we will break ground for the Leah Ngini Center (LNC) that will house learning, recreation and commercial facilities for students and the community. The center will have a one stop floor for delivery of student services. The floor will also house student council offices. At the heart of the

complex is the ‘Wellness Center’ that promotes the wellbeing of the community by training and providing ‘preventive health care’ as a more proactive and sustainable alternative for health care. LNC will be home of the ICT development herb that will leverage the use of ICT in the delivery of programmes especially through e-learning. A micro finance center is planned to provide hands on training for business students as well as providing entrepreneurial guidance, financial advice and services for the greater community. Together with a bookstore/commercial outlet, gym, exhibition area, meeting and lecture theaters, and cafés, the LNC will provide excellent opportunities for corporate and business investment and partnerships.
