The progressive Prince Eugene of Savoy – one of the richest and most celebrated men of the early 18th century – was a man ahead of his time. He needed a place to enjoy his cultural bounty and entertain his court, so he built Lower and Upper Belvedere, two palaces used to house his treasures and regale his admirers. The modern building that houses the new Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere takes inspiration from Prince Eugene himself. It opens in May 2019 with objectives similar to the ones he promoted: to further the arts and serve the community.
Just steps from the original Belvedere palaces, the new hotel was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. A glittering embassy for the senses, Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere is in the vibrant quartier that lends it its name. The 16-storey glass blocks, which rise on giant pillars, house 303 guest rooms and 44 suites and a penthouse suite on the 15th floor. The exterior is a contemporary addition to the city’s refined urban landscape and interiors take inspiration from Viennese life through the ages.
Rooms and communal spaces are furnished with light oak parquet floors, cut glass, and etched mirrors and wooden chairs that take their cue from classic Viennese coffee houses. The warm lounge bar, with its dark leather sofas and hardwood cabinetry, is in the heart of the lobby and shows work from local contemporary artists.
In Vienna, which has a reputation for culture, music, learning and civilised daily life, there is
a new and talented generation of creatives whose aim is to raise the city’s artistic capital. Visitors to the hotel will witness members of this energetic community firsthand as they roll up the shutters on their independent boutiques and cafés in the morning and use the lobby to meet friends.
And let’s not forget Vienna itself. Naschmarkt, a bustling gourmet’s paradise of food stalls and restaurants, is a fabulous (and nearby) introduction to the aroma of city life that has operated on the same site since a little after the Belvedere palaces were built in the 1700s. A stroll along the Danube Canal, where crowds gather to explore the graffiti and enjoy a glass or two of the city’s Helles beers, is a must before dinner. Once you have worked up a healthy appetite, head to Eugen21 – the tavern-style restaurant at Andaz – to try beloved Austrian classics as well as new spins on old favourites. Expect small seasonal plates, cold cuts, pot pies, soups, chops, cutlets, stews and healthy delicacies.
To round off a day in the City of Dreams you can head up to Aurora, the Andaz hotel’s rooftop bar, which has a 360-degree view of the entire city. A fire pit and resident DJ accompany cocktails that can be shaken and stirred well into the wee hours. If Prince Eugene were still gallivanting his way around the Schweizergarten Park outside, it’s a safe bet that he would be stopping in for a nightcap or two on his way back to the summer palace. Out of his 35 year-old career in the hospitality industry, Kurt Straub has spent 26 years at the Hyatt Hotels Corporation. He recently became the vice president of operations – Middle East, Africa and South West Asia which has pushed him to move faster towards his goals. Kurt is now named as the 6th most influential hotel professional working in the Middle East and North Africa. The list includes 50 hospitality
professionals from various companies. He has moved 10 ranks up from last year’s issue.
