DAYAL Vallabh was one of the founder members of Jeppe Eagles Cricket and Football Club. At a tender age of ten, he had already been an active organiser and leader in several clubs ard associations.

At 16 in 1945, he joined the Azad Cricket Club. He soon played a leading role in its affairs. He was instrumental in guiding a young bard of cricketers to become the “ B” division league champions for the 1962/63 season.

He had a very likeable personality and gained popularity, not only among his own team-mates, but also among all other players with whom he came into contact. Both in cricket and in football, as a delegate of his respective clubs, he excelled in debates at union

Dayal Vallabhor association meetings.

He soon became an official in the Witwatersrard Cricket Union (record clerk), and in the Witwatersrard Football Association (treasurer).

He held both posts until his death. Dayal took particular pride in encouraging young men to take up sport. He contributed consder- ably in this sphere as the organiser of the Junior Football League in the Wits. Senior sport administrators

consdered him a jxjtential future leader in the arena of sports administration. It is tragic that this potential was lost forever.

After a sudden ard short illness Dayal Vallabh passed away on 13 August 1967 at the tender age of 28 years.

= Divyesh RanchhodDIVYESH Ranchhod was bom in Jeppe and attended school in Fordsburg. He soon followed in the footsteps o f his uncles and joined Swaraj Sporting Qub. He showed great determination and talent, although he played only for a few seasons.

In 1990 he qualified as a motor mechanic and seemed to have a wonderful career ahead o f him. Unfortunately, he died a premature death on the 29 July 1992, about a year after the death o f his beloved wife Soonita.

Mehfooz Motala was bom in Grasmere in 1954. He schooled in Lenasia. His contact with Swaraj Sporting CLub karted at Lenz High, he was an excellent soccerite and played the game with passion and commitment.

In 1977 he married Sara with whom he had three children. At a young age he developed cancer and passed away on 20 December 1984.

THIS decade began with a very significant move with regards to the constitution. This was still in Gujerati and it was decided to translate it into English.

For the club, this decade can easily be called a decade of turmoil. Due to travelling problems from Lenasia, Jepp>e Eagles decided to re-affiliate to Witwatersrand Indian Football Association (WIFA).

Then in 1966, a major decision had to be taken with regard to affiliation to the local body. In order to continue playing at the Natalspruit Sport’s Ground, WITS had to affiliate to Football Association of South Africa (FASA).

But Wits, under the chairmanship of Mr A Bhana, was unwilling to do so. This meant that Wits had to find a new playing venue. The CMR rnine grounds in Maraisburg was negotiated for. But, it meant that the playing fields had to be scraped and levelled.

Again, it was decided that we would have only two teams — Swaraj Sporting and Moons. The Moons team remained intact, but the Swaraj Sporting and Jeppe Eagles teams were combined to form a single team.

Season 1967 unfortunately was a very bad season for our club, because no soccer was played at all. This year was also a very tragic year, in that one of our most loyal and dedicated members, Mr Dayal Vallabh, died a premature death. His death Was indeed a big blow for the club.

The next season brought on further turmoil for the club. Although a unanimous decision was taken to affiliate to the Johannesburg Indian Football Association, (WIFA) so that we could resume our fixtures at the Natalspruit grounds, we had started experiencing travelling problems with the team from Lenasia.

Due to this problem it was decided to affiliate Swaraj ‘A ’ to the Western District Football Association (WDFA). Swaraj however, continued playing in town.

It was decided that Swaraj ‘A ’ be affiliated to the A-division of WDFA, as Swaraj Sporting Club. However, the application was rejected by WDFA, because it’s constitution clearly stated that, new

The Third Decadeclubs seeking affiliation, must do so to the second division and then seek promotion.

This was not acceptable to the club, and a move was made to affiliate to JIFA again, and the teams were reshuffled.

Due to the teams being separated by the Group Areas Act, it became difficult to convene regular meetings. Again, a move was made to affiliate to the WDFA.

Amongst all this turmoil, a very positive aspect emerged for two of our players. Mr Walter Muller and Mr I Hira were selected to represent JIFA in the Sam China Tournament in Durban. Mr. Walter Muller was also a coach and mentor of the junior team at the time.

The year 1969 was a very significant year — the Lenasia team won league honours and this brought on a celebration. A special general meeting was also held to plan the 25th anniversary celebration. A special committee was elected by the players and some of the senior members, to plan for the function. The function was later held at the Jasmine Hall, Lenasia on 3 October 1981. This function comprised a dinner and speeches.

The following season again brought on disruptions. As most of the players were now living in Lenasia, it was decided to affiliate two teams to LFA. An under 16 team was also affiliated in Lenasia.

Towards the end of the third decade, the first team again won honours. The question of affiliating a junior team to Junior Association in Lenasia also arose.

Among the players who performed exceptionally well during this period were - Thakor Parbhoo, Balwant Chiba, Suresh Ravjee, Harish Uka and Harish Bhowan.

In summary, although the beginning of the 3rd decade was one of turmoil due to the Group Areas Act, the end of the decade saw the club celebrate it’s Silver Jubilee and the first team bring numerous honours to the club.

TH E Swaraj Sporting Club was established in 1945 and will, therefore be 50 years old this year : 1995. W e congratulate the club on this splendid achievement.

Today this is an achievement indeed when so many o f our old and treasured sports clubs are no longer in existence having been sacrificed to promote what has been called unity and progress but which really amounts to the promotion of the very established sport which has always been based on racism and which was responsible for gross discrimination, keeping our disadvantaged sportspersons back from realising their true potential.

Our warm wishes go to the members of the club and its officials for a productive future of service to Swaraj Sporting in particular and the community at large.

The South African Council on Sport (SACOS) is still in existence and actively concerned with and about the state o f sport in South Africa in particular. W e feel that our mission has not been accomplished and that our credo that there can be no normal sport in an abnormal society is still valid.

The “Rainbow Nation” does not exist as We are a deeply divided society, divided along racial, social and economic lines. There are as many, if not more, unemployed, homeless.

disadvantaged people with an ever-widening chasm between them and those who lie in affluence.

The youngster from the township (yes, they still exist!) has very little, if any, chance of making it to the top in sport and in life. Sadly, the system that is responsible has largely been

kept intact and hope for the future is slowly but surely fading away.

Our credo, therefore, runs like a golden thread through our aims, ideals and our activities, motivating us to continue the fight for true non-racial sport in a genuine democratic society. Those who find the existence of SACO S bothersome will have to answer by working diligently unth dedication on a principled basis for a society which is “normal” in respect o f equal op

portunity for all South Africans free of racism, sexism and discrimination of all kinds.

Members and particularly the officials will have to fight the new elites, the new bureaucracy in sport. Most have made no contribution to the sports or any other struggle in South Africa but they are, as it is said, smiling all the way to the bank basking in the glory of media publicity. You must continue serving your club and the community as you have done for fifty glorious years!

R eg Feldman

Tigers FCW e would like to welcome Swaraj Sporting to the 5 0 ’s club. All our best wishes for achieving this milestone.

W e identify with your organisations objectives to promote and develop sports amongst the youth and wish you all the success for the future.

W e pray that Swaraj Sporting grows from strength to strength.

W e would like to take this opportunity o f thanking all Swaraj Sporting officials for assistance rendered.

Congratulations to Swaraj Sporting Club. May you grow from strength to strength

Page sponsored in memory of: Chandrakant Govind

M essages of support

IT affords me great pleasure to send this message o f congratulations and good wishes to the members of the Swaraj Sporting Club on your Golden Jubilee.

26 years ago, in 1969, Swaraj Sporting Club joined the ranks o f the Lenasia Football Association.

During the years 1970, 1971 and 1972 Swaraj Sporting Club annexed both the league and knockout trophies in the second and third divisions respectively.

During the succeeding years the club Was fairly consistent in its performance. While the club failed to achieve Challenge League status, a large number of its players featured in the line-up of other clubs in this league.

Swaraj Sporting Club was the best disciplined club in the LFA. None of its players were involved in any serious disciplinary issues. This discipline extended to the lifestyle o f the players, as they pursued professional careers.

The club gave the Association its undi-

Mahdi Kollopenvided support as it stood steadfastly with it in its fight to join the SASF.

The division o f soccer in Lenasia in 1988 also had its effect on the Swaraj Sporting Club. A group o f its members joined the ranks o f the LSL.

It was during this period that Dr Rasik Gopal and I examined the dwindling interest not only in soccer but in all the codes of sport in Lenasia. W e concluded that in order to revive interest it was necessary that solid structures be established. This could only be achieved through the formation o f sports clubs.

In 1992, the process to establish Lenasia’s first sports club was set in motion. Swaraj Sporting Club and Azad Cricket Club decided to merge.

A sports club obviously needs a base. Thus the process to secure a lease in the Extension 3 field in Lenasia. Meetings were held with all the role players and today this process is in its final stages.

I am confident that the next generation will celebrate the Centenary of the new club.

Lenasia Soccer AssociationON behalf o f the executive committee and the members o f the Lenasia Soccer Association (LSA ), I wish to congratulate your club who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year.

Few sporting organisations survive to celebrate their Golden Jubilee and even fewer have survived 50 years.under the apartheid regime o f the previous government, which brought to divide people, by preventing them from living and playing sport together.

Your club has not only survived but you have thrived without compromising your principles and today you have grown into a vibrant organisation which serves the game, the association and the community with distinction.

Your success was built on the values o f

discipline, integrity and sportsmanship. Other clubs striving to emulate your remarkable achievement should take note o f these values which all to often is absent in the modem game and endeavour to inculcate them in their hearts and minds o f the members.

The next 50 years promises to be even more challenging as we start rebuilding our communides which were destroyed and share our values, knowledge and expertise with those who are less fortunate than ourselves and as always we know that your club will play a vital role in bringing about the change.

We wish you every success over the next fifty years as you move to the centennial.

A. Lull - President
