Changing Your Address

Moving can be a hectic experience and divert all of your energy in to the task which may affect

Change your address at the post office a week before you move. You would definitely not like

your personal letters to arrive at the new resident’s mail and neither would they. This is not a big

available for you then fill out the mail forwarding form and submit it to the office. You can print

the form from the USPS website. You should call you realtor or landlord and double check your

Now, you must be certain whether you want a permanent or a temporary change of address.

This may depend on your plans and you can work it out on your own. A permanent change of

address would make it possible for your mail to be forwarded for a specific period of time. It

basically forwards anything but does not forward standard mail. If you are going somewhere for

a year or less than a temporary change of address would be best for you. You will have all your

mails forwarded to you for 6 months and then you can extend it to 12 months.

You should also change the address for all other members of your family by choosing the

individual option because you may get your mails forwarded only but the mails sent in other’s

name may still be delivered at the old address. Also notify the IRS of your address change. You

do want to receive your tax refund (if you are expecting one). Go to the social security

administration website and complete the COA form to keep receiving you retirement and other

benefits.

There is another option if you find this whole task too daunting. There are address change

services that would be happy to take care of all your worries for a fee. They will notify everyone

from utilities, memberships and subscriptions. Be sure to check on the company’s background

and their security measures.

You would have to change your address on your driver’s license too. Go to the DMV and fill out

the form and you will have it done very quickly.
