THE IMPORTANCE OF
VOTING
In Australia, the right to vote inelections is one of the privileges ofliving in a democracy: you have a
say in who will represent you at
federal, state/territory and levels ofgovernment.
WHO CAN VOTE
You are eligible to vote if you haveenrolled. To be eligible to enroll you
must:
⇒ Be an Australian citien or
eligible British sub!ect
⇒ Aged "# years and over and⇒ $ave lived at your address for at
least one month
COMPULSORY VOTING
%ompulsory voting means that everyeligible Australian %itien &"#'( is
re)uired by law to enroll and vote. If a person does not vote and is unable
to provide a *valid and sufficient+reason, a penalty is imposed.

HOW YOU ENROL TO VOTE
To enrol for the first time or get bac on t
he roll,
you can enrol online. You will need to provideevidence of your identity. You can use your
driver+s licence, Australian passport number or have someone who is enrolled confirm your
identity.
It is compulsory by law for all eligibleAustralian citiens to enrol and vote in federal
elections b -elections and referendums.
