2EGHS Parent Newsletter 1st Quarter - August 2016

The Principal’s Message..........

Dear  Parents:        Welcome  Back!    In  this,  Elk  Grove  High  School’s  50th  Anniversary  year,  we  are  truly  excited  to  get  started  again!        This  has  been  a  great  summer  at  EGHS,  with   lots  of  action  as  always!    Here’s  some  of  the  good  stuff:

-‐-‐New   LED   lights   have   been   installed   in   our   Fieldhouse,   and   they     look  amazing!    -‐-‐Our  Marching  Band  was  AWESOME  in  the  National  Independence  Day  Parade  in

Washington,  D.C.

-‐-‐Our  Automated  Manufacturing  Team  won  the  Skills  USA  NATIONAL    Championship  in  Louisville,  KY!

-‐-‐EGHS  Debater  Mike  Pauls  was  a  NATIONAL  Semi-‐Finalist!      At   this   point,   you   may   have   heard   that   we   have   FAR   more   clarity   than   before   regarding   the  Illinois  student  assessment  system.    Almost  of  the  confusion  of  the  past  two  years  is  gone,  and  we  now  have  not  only  an  identified  common  State  Assessment  for  Juniors  (the  SAT),  but  even  a  date  for  it  (April  5)!!!    We  are  extremely  pleased  that  the  PARCC  Assessment  is  no  longer  required  for  high  school  students,  allowing  us  to  focus  on  what  really  benefits  our  students  and  families  most.        Finally,   I   am   guessing   you   have   seen   something   at   this   point   about   District   214’s   “Redefining  Ready”   initiative.     We   very   excited   about   the   wide   range   of   possibilities   that   our   “Redefining  Ready”  focus  offers  our  students  as  we  work  for  the  long-‐term  improvement  of  the  whole  child  at  Elk  Grove  High  School  and  beyond.    More  information  is  available  at  www.redefininingready.org.        We   are   looking   forward   to   seeing   you   back   at   EGHS   very   soon!     All   the   best   to   you   and   your  family.          Sincerely,          Paul  Kelly  Principal

3EGHS Parent Newsletter 1st Quarter - August 2016

Sinceramente,          Paul  Kelly  Director

MORE  CONGRATULATIONS…..

To  Our  SkillsUSA  Students    (Submitted  by  Chad  Froeschle,  Erin  Ludewig,  Bill  Merchantz,  Marc  Sears  &  Jeff  Zdenovec)

It   brings   the   CTE   Division   and   Elk   Grove   High   School   great   pleasure   to  announce   the   success   of   these   students   at   the   2016   SkillsUSA   State  Competition.    What  an  outstanding  job  these  students  have  done  this  year!

In  the  Automated  Manufacturing  competition  the  EGHS  teams  took  both  1st   and   2nd   in   state.     Peter   Barts,   Campbell   Kraemer,   and   Jonathan  Faughn  have  now  been  invited  to  the  national  competition  held  in  June  in  Louisville,  Kentucky.    The  team  of  Anna  Connelly,  Maram  Safi,  and  Kacper  Migacz  brought  home  silver  medals.

In  the  Automotive  Service  competition  Daniel  McKay  took  6th  place  and  Dominic  Faciano  took  29th  place.

In  the  Carpentry  competition  Devin  Curran  took  2nd  place,  Cody  Danek  3rd  place,   Michael   Czaja   6th   place,   Austin   Danek   14th   place,   Nicole   Sugihara  18th  place,  and  Roque  Villalobos  19th  place.

2016  was   the   first   year   that  we   have   had   students   compete   in   the  CNC  Milling  competition  and  they  did  not  disappoint.    Brandon  Garcia  is  the  state  champion  and  James  Loska  brought  home  a  3rd  place  finish.    It  is  quite  impressive  that  of  the  eight  manufacturing  students  that  competed  down  at  state,  all  eight  brought  home  medals  from  their  podium-‐place  finishes.

In  the  Commercial  Baking  competition  Angela  Geraci  took  10th  place,  Eiko  Horibe  11th  place,    and  Pedro  Abad  18th  place.

In  the  Culinary  Arts  competition  Carly  Hertzberg  took  8th  place  and  Mary  Cronin  took  10th  place.

Connor  Cloherty  Medals  at  DECA  Competition                                                                            in  Nashville                                (Submitted  by:    DECA  Advisor,  Chad  Froeschle)

From the School Nurse......Kathie Sczepanski

MEDICATION  GUIDELINES:  The   responsibility   for   administering   student  medication   rests   solely  with   the   parents,   or   guardian;   thus   a  schedule   should   be   arranged   so   that   all   medication   is   taken   at   home   under   parental   supervision   and   not  during   school   hours.     In   exceptional   cases   when   medication   must   be   taken   during   the   school   day,   the  regulations   from  the  Illinois  Department  of  Public  Health,   “Guidelines   for  Management  of  Medication   in  the  Schools”  will  be  implemented  by  the  Certified  School  Nurse  as  follows:

Procedures:  1. The   school   nurse   is   to   be   informed   of   students   who   are   receiving  medication   for   long-‐term  medical  conditions.

2. Whenever  possible,  medication  should  be  self-‐administered  under  the  supervision  of  the  school  nurse  or  an  administrator.

3. Medication   is   to  be  brought  to  the  school   in  a  container,  which  has  been  appropriately   labeled,  by  the  pharmacy  or  physician.

4. When  medication  must  be  administered  at  school,  the  parent  or  guardian  is  to  provide  for  the  school  a  District  214  medication  request  form  authorizing  the  administration  of  the  prescribed  medication.    This  form  is  available  at  the  school  health  services  office  or  for  download  on  the  district  or  individual  school  web   site   (www.d214.org  or   eghs.d214.org,   click  on  Parents,  Health   Services   and   then  Forms).     Yearly  renewal  is  required.

5. Tylenol   or   Acetaminophen   can   now   be   administered   with   parental   permission   on   the   on-‐line  registration  form.

6. The  school  nurse  and/or  the  principal  may,  at  their  discretion,  reject  the  requests  for  administration  of  medication.    It  is  understood  that  the  school  district  provides  this  service  in  the  interest  of  the  well  being  of  students  and  as  an  accommodation  to  parents.

Developed  by:    District  214  Advisory  Committee  as  mandated  by  state  law  (P.A.  86-‐1441).    The  members  of  this  committee  are  representatives  of  District  214  administrators,  school  nurses,  teacher-‐trainers,  community  physicians,  nurses,  and  parents.    ASTHMA  INHALER/EPI  PEN  POLICY:Asthma  Inhaler/Epi  pen  Policy  In   accordance   with   105ILCS   5/22-‐30   and   District   214   Medication   Policy,   students   may   carry   and   self-‐administer  asthma  medication  or  Epi  pens  at  school.    An  Asthma  Inhaler/Epi  pen  Request  form  needs  to  be  completed  yearly  with  the  physician’s  signature.    This  form  can  also  be  obtained  in  the  school  health  office  or  on  the  school  or  district  website.    Each  student  should  carry  his/her  inhaler/Epi  pen  in  its  original  pharmacy  labeled   container   with   the   student’s   name,   the   drug   name   and   exact   dosage,   and   the   time   in   which   the  medication   is   to   be   taken.     As   with   any   medication,   inhalers/Epi   pens   should   not   be   shared   with   other  students.    UPDATING  PHONE  NUMBERS:  Please   remember   to   call   the   attendance   office   to   report   any   phone   number   changes.     Having   accurate  information   in   an   emergency   is   vital.     Students   that   need   to   go   home   due   to   illness   or   injury   will   not   be  excused  without  permission  from  a  parent/guardian  or  emergency  contact.      VISITS  TO  THE  NURSE:  Any  students  coming  to  the  nurse  need  to  have  a  pass  from  their  current  class.    If  it  is  a  passing  period,  the  student  needs   to   get   a  pass   from   the   class   they  will   be   starting.    The  only   exceptions  are   in   an  emergency  (bleeding,   feeling   lightheaded,   etc.)   or   if   they   are   have   a   study   on   campus   or   lunch.     It   is   at   the   nurse’s  discretion  if  a  student  is  allowed  to  rest  during  class.    Many  things  are  taken  into  account  (reason  for  request,  grades,   attendance,   previous   visits   to   the   nurse,   etc.)     One   of   the   goals   of   the   health   office   is   to   treat   the  student   so   they   can   function   at   their   best   while   allowing   optimal   time   for   learning   by   reducing   out   of  classroom  time.

20EGHS Parent Newsletter 1st Quarter - August 2016

Dear Parent(s)/ Guardian(s), We are proud to invite you to our Fall Open House at Elk Grove High School on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. This is one of the most important and beneficial evenings of the school year, and we urge all Elk Grove families to take advantage. Ours is a great school, filled with people who care about your students, and we want to share what we do with you. We are eager to partner with you…please take advantage of this unique chance to meet with our staff and learn about EGHS! During the evening, you will have an opportunity to follow an abbreviated version of your student’s schedule. During class presentations, teachers will provide you with an overview of each course, including course objectives and the resources used in class. Grading information, important projects/assignments, homework expectations, supplies needed, and teacher contact information will also be shared. In addition to visiting with each of your child’s teachers, you will be able to attend special presentations targeted for parents of each class. The presentations will include information you need to know as a parent of a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior student. These presentations will be repeated each lunch hour – periods 4, 5, and 6. An Open House schedule, which includes the locations of the class presentations, is included with this mailing. Please plan to attend the appropriate presentation during your child’s lunch hour. Class periods are ten minutes in length with a five-minute passing period. Please remember to bring your student’s schedule with you on Open House night. At any time during the evening you may see your child’s counselor and visit one of the tables in the Main Hallway, set up for our Parent Teacher Council and Grenadier Athletic Boosters. On Open House night, our Parent Teacher Council (PTC) will be distributing the EGHS Student / Parent Phone and Address directory to parents who have paid the PTC $20.00 membership fee. If you have not yet joined our PTC or our Grenadier Athletic Boosters, you will have a chance to sign up on the night of Open House. Bring a check for $20.00 for PTC and/or $25.00 for GAB (Grenadier Athletic Boosters). Please note that our Open House format is not the appropriate setting for individual conferences regarding student progress. Parents who desire a personal conference with a teacher should arrange for one at a later date. We look forward to meeting with you Wednesday, September 14th. Please arrive by 6:45 p.m. so that you have adequate time to find your student’s 1st period classroom. Best Regards, Paul Kelly Megan Knight Kyle Burritt Principal Associate Principal Associate Principal

 CONTROVERSIAL  ISSUES  IN  THE  CLASSROOM

Township  High  School  District  214’s  primary  mission  is  to  enable  all  students  to  learn  the  skills,  acquire  the  knowledge,  and  develop  the  behaviors  necessary  for  them  to  reach  their  full  potential  as  citizens  who  can  meet  the  challenges  of  a  changing  society.  In  a  democracy  that  openly  confronts  acute  and  pressing  political,  social,  economic,  and  moral  problems,  it  is  likely  that  such  issues  will  be  evident  in  classrooms.  Discussions   about   these   issues   provide   students   with   the   type   of   learning   experience   that   will   help  prepare  them  to  meet  the  challenges  of  a  global  changing  society.    District  214  provides  its  parents/guardians  an  opportunity  to  grant  or  refuse  permission  for  their  son  or  daughter  to  participate  in  a  class  activity  or  to  request  an  alternative  assignment  when  study  materials  are   deemed   controversial.   Parents/guardians   with   concerns   regarding   controversial   issues,   materials,  and   curricula   should   contact   the   school’s   principal/designee.   The   administration   has   established  guidelines,  procedures,  and  safeguards  for  an  unbiased,  impartial  handling  of  controversial  issues  in  the  classroom.

DISTRICT  214    HAS  AN  APP!  Want   on-‐the-‐go   information   from   District   214?   There’s   an   app   for   that!   The   District   has   officially  launched  a  free  iPhone  and  Android  supported  app  that  gives  you  mobile-‐friendly  access  to  District  214  news  and  school   information.    Among  other   features,   the  new  app  offers  a  password-‐activated  Contact  Manager   feature   that   lets   parents,   students   and   staff   opt   in   to   receive   text  messages   in   the   case   of  closings  or  school  emergency  situations.    To  set  up  the  text  service,  visit  www.d214.org/cm.pdf.    You’ll  need  your  student’s  school  ID#  and  one  of  the   phone   numbers   on   record   in   order   to   opt   in.     The   app   also   features   easy   access   to   District   214’s  growing   social   media   presence   through   clickable   links   to   official   Twitter,   Flickr   and   Facebook   feeds;  maps;  links  to  the  Board  of  Education  and  employee  contact  pages  of  District  214’s  website;  and  links  to  all  District  214  school  and  alternative  program  pages.    The  goal  is  to  provide  even  better  communication  through  the  use  of  innovative  technology  –  already  a  staple  in  our  classrooms.  This  new  app  allows  us  to  meet  you  where  you’re  at  and  deliver  relevant  information  as  it’s  needed.    The  District  214  app  is  available  for  free  download  through  Google  Play  and  iTunes  by  searching  for  High  School  District  214.

 ACCESS  TO  THE  SCHOOL  ELEVATOR

If  your  son/daughter  needs  the  temporary  use  of  an  elevator  card  due  to  a  medical  condition,   the  card  can  be  obtained  from  the  school  nurse,  Ms.  Sczepanski.    If  the  card  is  lost  or  not  returned,  there  will  be  a  $25  fine.      Abuse  of  the  elevator  will  result  in  consequences.    If  you  have  any  questions,  the  nurse  can  be  reached  at  847-‐718-‐4473  or  at  [email protected].

38EGHS Parent Newsletter 1st Quarter - August 2016

March 2, 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian and Staff Members: In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide applications on school property. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits, and rodenticide baits. Elk Grove High School has therefore established a registry of people who wish to be notified. To be included in this registry for school year 2016-17, please complete the form below and submit it to the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor at your school. Any other questions you may have regarding the District’s pest management practices may also be directed to Ted Birren at 847-718-7619.
