The big three events we have are the JFTX at Camp Rapid from 10-13April 2014, Governor’s Day, as well as all labs. The JFTX and labs will focus on land navigation, STX lanes and patrolling. Be sure to work in time to support the Drill Club and Cateau Ranger training periods to learn about “cool” Army stuff. Be ready for the RECORD APFT on 4 April 2014. Summer time is very busy for Cadets. Many will attend training related to LDAC, CULP or internships. If you are going to LDAC this summer, be prepared for hot and humid days. Howdy y’all,

The holidays have passed and we are about midway through the spring se-mester. Now the real work is just beginning and there is much to do despite the frigid weather conditions. January started with a welcome back and just for fun Army Physi-cal Fitness Test. You just can’t do too much PT! Our first lab was a great success as we completed the Battalion Change of Command, an introduction to the Field Leader-ship Reaction Course (FLRC) and first aid. The Senior Cadets conducted a Battle Analysis/ Staff Ride for the “Battle of Westport” and as of this writing, the combat wa-ter survival swim test is behind us.

For the rest of the semester, you can add two more APFT’s, that’s three if you are an MS III Cadet, maybe a day out at Oak Lake for STX Lanes and more land navi-gation or a Campus LAB at the least and our Joint Forces Field Training Exercise at Camp Rapid. We also have the Ranger Buddy Competition, Governor’s day, an awards dinner, graduation and commissioning also. Then it’s off to Fort Knox for the MS III class to complete the Leader Development and Assessment Course and their internships. All of this to ensure each of you have the needed skills for graduation and to become the Army Leaders of tomorrow. With that goal in sight, you must also focus on academic achievement. It’s very simple; if you do not graduate you do not commission and that’s not an option! So stay focused and work towards improving your GPA.

On another note, I have been asked about the Order of Merit list for Cadet Practical Field Training. That’s Basic Airborne, Air Assault or any other school we might have an opportunity to send a Cadet too. To qualify, you must:

· Be in good academic standing

· Be a Contracted Cadet

· Score a minimum of 80 points in each event of the APFT

· Meet height and weight or tape IAW AR-600-9

· Be an MS II or III due to the fact MS-I and IV require waivers

These schools are getting harder to get and qualified candidates must be available on short notice to be able to attend.

Last but not least, spring break is almost here and I want to see all of you back after some much deserved time off. I am reminding everyone to “BE SAFE” in all that you do. We want you to have fun, but always be conscience of what you are doing and the risks you are taking. Best course of action is to ensure you include risk mitigation and a 5-point contingency plan in your travels and all activities. Above all,

call if you need assistance. There is always a Cadre member willing to help you. Never give up and never surrender!

My first week at SDSU Army ROTC has been quite memorable and makes me eager to see

what else is in store for the coming semester.

The weather may be slowing operations for the time being, but soon the program will be

in full swing and I am excited to engage every cadet in their growth and involvement at the West

Point of the Plains. Some of my favorite interactions around campus so far include my introduc-

tion to Frost Arena Physical Training, winter driving conditions, cadet campus and community

outreach, and the awesome interaction between SDSU athletics and our program!

The PT program at SDSU is intense and built for young athletes in their prime. This was a

welcome wake up call to an old Soldier, and I hope I was able to keep up! The ice and snow here

in Brookings is much different than the windy dry conditions of my Texas home, but I appreciate

the guidance and encouragement from all the people of Brookings regarding what it means to

live in the North!

I was encouraged this first week to learn that two cadets are currently serving as the Vice

Presidents of on campus clubs and organizations. Involvement in the community isn’t just about

building your resume or your network, it is about being involved and learning about the commu-

nities in which we live. I hope these cadets are an encouragement to other cadets to get involved

around campus and the community.

On my initial visit to the SDSU campus and Brookings area I enjoyed a Men’s Basketball

game at Frost arena. When I returned for my permanent duty I was encouraged to learn how

well the most recent Military Appreciation day went at the Men’s Basketball game. This is an en-

couragement to all service members and cadets. Not only should service members value their

community, they should feel valued by their community. This was directly apparent during the

game and silent auction!

I want to thank you all for welcoming me to SDSU and encourage you to stop by my office

at any time to let me know what makes SDSU special for you!

Warrior Forge/LDAC

Cadets going to LDAC—be prepared to embark upon the most important part of your Army ROTC career; there are many details to think about as you prepare for LDAC.

Work through the paperwork and medical details that must be in order prior to LDAC. This is important information to the staff at LDAC or other training locations to ensure your safety and good health in case of injury or illness.

I.D. Cards and I.D. Tags are required if you are going to be in-volved in follow-on training such as CTLT. If you are not sure wheth-er you need one, please see your MS III Instructor.

As the anxiety of attending LDAC starts to set in, the need for more training to alleviate the anxiety may be needed. Ensure you are personally prepared for all the elements that you will face at Warrior Forge to include land navigation and squad STX.

When will I know when I will go to LDAC? Regimental re-quests have been submitted and Brigade should determine assign-ments by the middle of March. Regiments are assigned within the pa-rameters of HQs with consideration for your personal preference. Some regiments are nearly filled with Cadets attending follow-on training such as NSTP, CULP, CTLT, Airborne, Air Assault and intern-ships. Your regimental assignments may be impacted by those train-ing events.

Once regiments are confirmed, orders for travel are generated. Travel is from either your home of record or from the school location. Please plan to hand carry a folder of information that you will need for travel and immediately upon your arrival at LDAC. Included will be copies of your orders, your travel itinerary, immunization history, etc. Please pick this folder up from Mrs. Wosje during finals week.

Key to your performance at LDAC is to stay fit between the end of the school year and your PT Test at LDAC. PT performance often sets the tone for your time at LDAC. But as you are well aware, the MS III PT is above and beyond the norm here at SDSU. The Brigade Commander has set high standards for all of you; work hard to meet the goals set for you.

You will be ready for the challenges at LDAC; just stay sharp; train hard.

If you are travel-ing for training through Army ROTC this summer, please be pro-active and ready to meet the re-quirements—provide your blood type, im-munization history, a copy of your driver’s license, etc. Please check your ID card to ensure it is dated through the end of your training.

MS IIIs:

We will work togeth-er to to meet the pa-perwork require-ments for LDAC. We got a good start al-ready. We will con-tinue completing documentation re-quired when the reg-ulation is available and we have regi-ment dates.

MS IIIs and IVs not already accessed:

In late March 2014, we will begin the ac-cession process for those who will gradu-ate between 1Oct13 and 30Sep14. Anyone graduating during that time frame, please plan to meet for an acces-sions brief.

Smoke’s Supplies

Heading to the home stretch! We all know this is the time of year when we are either ahead of the game or just realizing how far behind we really are. In my ROTC experience, it’s usually the latter but either way it’s time to get hot!

Governor’s Day is just around the corner, so if you are still in need of ASUs please come and see me so we can get you fitted properly prior to the big day.

If you are going to commission in May, please make sure you have already ordered your ASU uniform or have gone through my supply room for measure-ments and ordering advice. I am always happy to help. ASUs aren't cheap so bring your CC!

MS-IV TA-50 and clothing turn in will be conducted after the JFTX. You must bring all items that are on your clothing record for turn in. Items must be clean and dry. If you have questions as to what you turn in or need a copy of your clothing record please email me and I will scan it for you.

CPFT and CULP are also right around the corner. For many of these events there are special needs in the way of clothing and or equipment. As soon as the packing list is available come see me so we can get you the necessary gear for the school you are attending. “Smoke”

Traveling Outside the US?

Military Science Minor

To check for travel advisories for specif-ic locations, please review the State De-partment website at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html/ Be safe and enjoy

your travel!

All ROTC Cadets planning to travel outside the US must complete the AT Lev-el 1 Awareness Train-ing and submit a packet of information to the Third Brigade before you begin travel.

The AT training is general in nature, but the training gener-ates thoughts regard-

ing awareness of your surroundings, cloth-ing that you wear and cultural differences.

Please go to the website https://atlevel1.dtic.mil/at/ and complete the training.

After you have completed the train-ing, please print your certificate and bring it to the office.

ment. If you are a SMP receiving USAR/ARNG benefits, your tuition assistance program may pay the fees in the fall as well. More information on this requirement will be distributed to the MS III class. Questions, please con-tact your MSL instruc-tor.

To earn a minor in Military Science Lead-ership, you must com-plete MSL 494 for aca-demic credit. Under the provision of the SDSU Academic Catalog, you may en-roll for and receive academic credit for successful completion of the Army Leader-ship Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). Please enroll in MSL 494 for either the SDSU Summer

Session that is concur-rent with your attend-ance at LDAC or for the following Fall Semes-ter. There is no tuition charge for MSL 494 but the fees associated with the class must be paid. If you register for MSL 494 for the Fall Semester, the cost of fees will be paid by your scholarship—if you are a scholarship cadet receiving tuition and fee reimburse-

ROO Review

Recruiting feeds the future of our program, the U.S. Army, National Guard & Reserves Remember the future of the Army ROTC Program is in your hands. Take advantage of bringing in prospects. More cadets in the program means more future leaders and greater training opportunities. Do you have a friend who is tired of student loans or would want extra spending money? Every cadet has received some form financial aid through ROTC and at the same time received high quality leadership training which will allow cadets to succeed in the military and the civilian world. There are many ways to join ROTC as a Freshman through the Junior year. Leader’s training Course (LTC) is a great way to bring a sophomore into the program. LTC takes place over the summer. Here a few quotes to keep in mind as you take your journey as a future leader and continue to lead soldiers: Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Peter F. Drucker Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results. George S. Patton Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. Dwight Eisenhower A leader is a dealer in hope. Napoleon Bonaparte The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision . You can't blow an uncertain trumpet. Theodore M. Hesburgh

Keep up the great job of recruiting!! You are the backbone of the ROTC program. Bring prospects in to my office or call me at 605-688-6640. Thanks! Mr. Ness

Commissioning Requirements

Our commissioning and pinning ceremony will be held on Fri-day, 9May14, at 1300 in Peterson Recital Hall, Lincoln Music Hall.

May commissionees will receive a memo in March from LTC Schultz with commissioning requirements. Please read the memo thoroughly as it contains pertinent information regarding all aspects of commissioning.

Please plan to pick up a letter to take to your instructors the week of April 14 to get grades and signatures from each of your clas-ses. This letter goes to the Registrar for verification of graduation re-quirements before you can be commissioned. You can start planning for your commissioning now.

The 4 April 2014 APFT results will be used for your commis-sioning APFT scores.

Please remember that you need three gold bars and a silver dol-lar at the commissioning ceremony. Silver dollars can be purchased at a coin shop in Sioux Falls or ordered on the internet.

Ever wonder why newly commissioned officers give a Silver Dollar to the recipient of their first salute?

This long standing tradition started sometime in the 19th century in the Amy. In the 19th century, a silver dollar was worth much more than it is today. Today, Eisenhower silver dollars can cost from $8.50 to $60.00. Other silver dollars can cost much more.

It is said that you have to buy your first salute and then earn eve-ry salute thereafter through your performance and by gaining the re-spect of your subordinates.

Governor’s Day

Orders for Reserve Duty or Active Duty

Local veteran organi-zations present awards to deserving cadets during the ceremony. The ceremony in-cludes a pass and review as well as refreshments. Plan to partici-pate in this spe-cial appreciation day on campus.

Governor’s Day is April 9. The Gover-nor of South Dakota, Dennis Daugaard, will attend and speak. The time will be set later as the Governor’s schedule permits. Governor’s Day has been held for over 50 years at SDSU and in addition to a recur-ring special event, it is an opportunity to showcase ROTC on campus and to dis-

play our appreciation to military personnel in the campus com-munity to include students and staff. The ceremony will be held on the Campus Green. Inclement weather site is Lin-coln Music Hall. Practice for the cere-mony will be held prior to the ceremo-ny; specific times will be disseminated through the Cadet Chain of Command.

If you are being commissioned in May, please watch your AKO email account for an RFO, Re-quest for Orders. RFOs briefly contain the information that will be in your orders. Orders con-tain BOLC dates and specific travel information. Second Lieutenants receive orders to begin du-ty whether active duty or reserve duty. For Cadets going on active duty, orders are cut by HQs, Cadet Command and issued through CCIMS. Please see Garnet for the availability of active duty orders. Each branch processes or-ders differently so you may or may not have a DD 1610 accompany your orders. Your orders or a DD 1610 will contain specific information for temporary duty (TDY). If you are going to serve in the ARNG or USAR, you will receive your orders for BOLC from Na-tional Guard Bureau or the Human Resource Command via your AKO account in conjunction with completing your DTS order and other requirements. Please read your orders thoroughly and report any errors that you find. Ask questions about the contents of the order to ensure you are ready to travel to BOLC.

Page 11 Volume 9, Issue 2

The Spring Semester is off to a great start with Spring Break being right around the corner. Once Spring Break is over it’s time go get busy with APFT, Labs, the JFTX, etc. The JFTX at West Cp Rapid is an excellent opportunity to get the hands on training that you need for the final preparation for LDAC. West Cp Rapid has excellent terrain that will challenge your land navigational skills. You will also have the opportunity of cross training with other Cadets from fellow SD Universities. It will feel good to get outdoors and enjoy some nice weather.

I would like to take this time to thank all of the Cadets that volunteered for the various Color Guard events and to those in charge of Drill Club. Color Guards are a great way to get some good exposure in the public’s eye. The Color Guard for the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves game was the highlight of the Spring Bas-ketball season. I am also looking forward to doing the Color Guard for the Sum-mit League Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls. It would be interesting to know how many fans that have observed the Army ROTC perform a Color Guard event between all of the Football and Basketball Games this school year.

Have fun and please be safe during your Spring Break.

Mr. Mahlen’s Message

Contracted Army ROTC Cadets have the privilege of registering early for classes for Fall Semester 2014. Please plan to register as early as you can; pri-ority times are assigned by the Registrar’s Office. You can find your date and time by checking MyStateOnline. Early Registration begins 24Mar14.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to register for classes early. Our department has worked hard to get this privilege for you —- please use it! The Registrar’s Office keeps statistics on how many Army ROTC Cadets regis-ter early. If not enough Cadets register early, we will lose this privilege. Your first step in the process is to schedule an appointment with your academic ad-visor.

Please go to MyStateOnline to check for your time to register and register at your earliest opportunity. By registering ahead of your peers, you will have a better selection of course sections to choose from as you plan your Fall Semes-ter classes.
