CommaRulesCommarulescanbeconfusing,notnecessarilybecausetheyredifficult,butbecausenoonecanseemtoagreeonwhattheyare.Oneteacherwilltellyouoneruleforusingcommaswhileanotherwilltellyouexactlytheopposite,andthefrustratingtruthisthattheyreprobablybothright.Therulesforcommauseare,forthemostpart,firmlyset,butthereareafewgrayareasaswell,anditshelpfultoknowwhattheyaresothatyouunderstandwhereyouabsolutelyneedacomma,whereyouabsolutelyshouldntputone,andwhereyoucanfiddlearoundabit.
10KeyRulesforCommas1.Useacommatoseparateitemsinalist(nounsandadjectives).Ifyouhavemorethantwonounsormorethanoneadjective,youneedtoseparatethemwithcommas.Inalistofnouns,youwillseparatethefinaltwowiththewordandorthewordorlikethis:
