At this meeting, members of our staff will be presenting details of our Interim Report cards as well as providing information on a major technology grant and how we are planning to spend the money from it. There will also be an update on the Marymount Fete. Our meeting is expected to finish by 8.30pm and all parents are welcome. New Report Card Format As the Australian Curriculum is progressively phased in across the nation and our school there will be changes made to the look and content of the reports cards that your children will receive. At present we send out two reports cards per year – one at the end of each semester and this practice will stay in place but there will be content changes. The Semester One reports which will be sent out next Wednesday with your child‘s individual portfolio, will reflect some minor changes in the wording and layout of our current reports. A new addition to the reports will be the inclusion of two extra rating scales; one for your child‘s effort and another for their behaviour. We would welcome your comments on these changes and these can be made through your child‘s respective class teachers. I would like to thank our staff Reporting Committee which is led by our Assistant Principal, Annette O‘Shea and our Curriculum Support Teacher, Diane Anderson, for their ongoing work in this area. Staff Planning Week During the course of this week and early next week our teachers will be meeting with their year level colleagues to plan their learning experiences for next term. The teachers will be out of class for half of the day and a relief teacher will be looking after their class. These planning days are extremely important for our teachers as they ensure consistency with national and Brisbane Catholic Education curriculum documents and guidelines as well within their own year levels. Bernadette Christensen, our Religious Education Co-Ordinator, and Diane Anderson, our Curriculum Support Teacher, work with our teachers throughout the course of these meetings. Our staff enter into these days in a very professional manner and my thanks is extended to them for this important work. Gardens and Grounds Our Groundsmen, John Stevens and Brad Doughty, have done a magnificent job over the last few weeks in an effort to bring some of our gardens into a better state of repair. John and Brad have trimmed many of the trees and dug out many rogue offshoots so that they can be kept in good order before the spring time of regrowth. Their efforts have been widely remarked upon and my congratulations goes to them both. Many of our classes now have much more natural light (and warmth) streaming into them. I would also like to thank our early morning Groundsman, David Hayward, for his efforts. David starts at 5.00am each day and is responsible for blow-vaccing the whole school. This stops paper and garden rubbish from mounting up around the school and especially so in some of the out of the way places like under stair wells. We don‘t often see David but we see the results of his hard work. Together our three gentlemen have made our school environment a pleasing and inviting one to be in. State of Origin news Once again our Tuckshop is holding a State of Origin themed day today. Well done to Vicki and her team of volunteers who really get into the spirit of the day with their special promotions. I hope it goes well for all. As for my tip – again I think that this will be a close encounter (my last tip missed out by 1 point!!!) and this time I‘m angling for the Blues, though I would be more than happy to be wrong. My call – NSW by 2! Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of the week. Interschool Sport This week is the last week of our Winter Interschool Sport program. We need all jerseys/uniforms returned after sport this week so that they can be cleaned and put away for next season. A big thanks to our children, parents and coaches for playing, supporting and organising and coaching sport each week. ARL Development Cup Today our 12 year old Rugby League players are involved in the ARL Development Cup Competition at Runaway Bay. The Development Cup is a State wide 12 years School Rugby League Competition which allows schools to play against other schools in their regions. Regional winners then play off against each other, culminating in a two school State final, usually held at Suncorp Stadium as a curtain raiser to an NRL match. We wish our players all the best PLEASE STOP PLACING THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN AT RISK!!!! Yes I am still on this band wagon, and I will continue until we get the message through to people. Thankfully, in some areas, the parking and illegal actions are beginning to diminish. Thank you! In the last 2 weeks I have been placing orange witches‘ hats on the No Parking signs near administration. In that time I have seen people get out of their car and move them to utilise the no parking space. Some parents still continue to DO THE WRONG THING! Thank you to those who do the right thing on a daily basis and keep our children safe. Cyber Bullying Last week was National Cyber Security Awareness Week! From time to time parents raise concerns in relation to their children‘s use of the internet. It is very likely if your child has been actively socializing online, he/she has been involved in some kind of online bullying. While it is fairly easy to figure out how much text messaging your child is involved in by the size of the phone bill, it is much harder to keep tabs on instant messaging on sites like MySpace, MSN and Facebook. All students (and their parents) are reminded that anything sent electronically can be stored and traced. Students need to realise that the internet world is not a toy or a playground. Rather it can be a serious domain where serious problems can occur. Parents have the responsibility to ensure children are using the internet provided at home in a safe and lawful manner. Allowing children to spend too much time in chat rooms or emailing friends is fraught with danger. Parents are advised to monitor their child / children‘s internet use, especially if they spend large amounts of time ‗chatting‘ to others online. Parents are encouraged to be aware of the sites their children are accessing. Occasional checks of your child‘s internet use are advisable. Parents are advised to have consequences for inappropriate use of the internet in the home. Have a great week Tony Barron

Marymount Primary supports the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal

Bring your winter clothes and blankets to student reception. Items will benefit local

families in need.

Peter Kearney visit Parents are all invited to join us on the afternoon of Thursday 16 June for a school concert with Australian singer Peter Kearney. Peter will sing with year level groups during the day in preparation for the afternoon. Students from the Instrumental Music program (both Col & Paul‘s groups) will do focused workshops with Peter and be the accompaniment for the concert. See you at The Shed for a 1.55pm start! Vincent de Paul Free Dress Day – bring a gold coin The theme for this fun day is ―Upside-down‖! Students might wear crazy socks, their pyjamas or their clothes inside out! Step outside of the ordinary and have a laugh while we raise funds for a serious cause. All donations will be sent directly to St Vincent de Paul at Burleigh for use in our local area. Please remember that rules about safety must still be adhered to – hats & enclosed shoes must be worn and shoulders covered. Congratulations Congratulations to the following children who have recently received the sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation. These two are sacraments of initiation into the church and follow on from Baptism. The children and their families have completed an extensive preparation program facilitated by parish volunteers.

Not just another Careers Expo ! The Marymount College Careers Expo is quite different from other events on offer. Not only do we encourage a wide variety of higher learning institutions to attend, but we also aim to bring industry experts from within our own community along to share in their knowledge and experience with our young people. Mr Robert Smithson a very senior officer within the Queensland Police Force, and college parent, willingly attends year after year, providing an unmeasurable level of guidance to Marymount students and parents. Ms Kate McBean (Ecofund Queensland) will be attending, representing and advising on the scientific eco industry. This is a very popular field with our young people and we are very fortunate to have her along. Ms Ellie McKenzie who is an experienced midwife practising at John Flynn Hospital, has very generously committed to speaking with any students interested in this field. These are just a few of our most valued parent contributors who are making themselves available between 6pm-8pm in the Doyle Centre on TUESDAY, 26TH JULY. We would be thrilled to add to this list and encourage any parents willing to share their knowledge and experience (no public speaking required) with our enthusiastic students and parents to please contact Leesa Lutze on 55861063 or via email to [email protected].
