Opportunity to Respond to A Crisis The Archdiocese of Cincinnati have asked parishes to share information with parishioners regarding the migrant crisis. Many of you want to take action or assist immigrant and refugee families and children arriving at the U.S./Mexico border and in our communities. Please see the list below and take action in solidarity with people seeking refuge, safety and security in the United States. 1) Call and Take Action to Oppose Inhumane Detention Conditions for Immigrants Recent reports has documented the inhumane and unsanitary conditions in which immigrants arriving to our southern bor-der, including children and families, are being held in by the Department of Homeland Security. Catholic social tradition teaches us that every person deserves equality and respect. It also teaches us that family is sacred—it is the cornerstone of our Church and our community. Catholic leaders have launched a campaign to end the inhumane treatment of immigrant and refugee children and families at the border, in detention centers, and in communities across the country. Call/contact the White House, Senators, and U. S. Representatives….following is a suggested script:

As a person of faith, I am calling today to strongly oppose the inadequate and unsanitary conditions in which immigrants, including children and families, are being held while in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security. I also oppose actions that unnecessarily separate immigrant families at the border, as well as in communities around the country through widespread enforcement actions. Family is sacred—it is the cornerstone of our Church and our community and must be protected. Guided by our Catholic faith and our national values, we affirm the dignity of all people and our call to love our neigh-bors. Every person, every family deserves stability and security. We urge you to reconsider actions that threaten family unity and address these unacceptable holding and detention conditions. We can and must remain a country that provides refuge for children and families fleeing violence and persecution.

2) Volunteer or Give Support asylum-seeking families who have fled their home countries and are arriving daily. Several of the Catholic Charities agencies serve as reception and hospitality centers along the U.S./Mexico border and provide for the immediate needs of released families and assist them with making travel arrangements to their final destinations. Contact your local Catholic Charities affiliate to learn more about their material and volunteer needs. 3) Foster an Unaccompanied Child USCCB/MRS currently provides foster care to unaccompanied immigrant children. You can find a list of locations at www.usccb.org/fostercare. Those interested in becoming a foster parent would need to follow state and agency guidelines for training and licensing. If you live in one of the states we serve, and you are interested in becoming a foster parent, contact [email protected] for more information. 4) Pray Prayer opens our hearts to the Holy Spirit and strengthens us to carry out God's work with compassion, devotion, and love. You and others can use the USCCB Prayer for Migrant Families to ask God to protect and provide for our immigrant sisters and brothers in Christ, or affirm your solidarity with them with the USCCB Prayer for Migrants and Refugees.

USCCB Prayer for Migrant Families

Good and gracious God, we thank you for the gift of families. We are grateful for all of the joy and love that they bring into our lives, and we ask that you provide special protection for all families, particularly those who face hardships as they move in search of a better life. Show mercy to those who travel in danger, and lead them to a place of safety and peace. Comfort those who are alone and afraid because their families have been torn apart by violence and injustice. As we reflect upon the difficult journey that the Holy Family faced as refugees in Egypt, help us to remember the suffering of all migrant families. Through the interces-sion of Mary our Mother, and St. Joseph the Worker, her spouse, we pray that all migrants may be reunited with their loved ones and find the meaningful work they seek. Open our hearts so that we may provide hospitality for all who come in search of refuge. Give us the courage to welcome every stranger as Christ in our midst. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Copyright © 2010, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Scripture for Next Week—Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time by Deacon Max Schellman

Training Session in August for the New Procedures in Distribution of Communion

Training for the new procedures for distribution of Communion took place in March and April. If you were unable to attend one of the training sessions, we have scheduled another session for you. The training session will be held on Monday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. It will be for anyone who has distributed Communion in the past, and for anyone who would like to join this ministry. Please mark your calendars so that you can attend this training session. Questions? Please call Steve Lindner.

Help Needed on Friday Mornings If you have some extra time on Friday mornings, we would appreciate some help with light cleaning and dusting around the altar. Please contact Steve Lindner at the number above for more information and/or to volunteer.

Changes to the Distribution of Holy Communion for Those

Who Cannot Come Forward If you are a handicapped or an elderly person who cannot come forward to receive Communion, please let an usher know before Mass begins. Our new procedure allows a designated distributor to come down from the altar first to bring the Body of Christ to you. Please let the usher know if you would like to receive both the Body and Blood of Christ. A distributor will bring you the Body of Christ first and when the Blood of Christ is distributed in your area, some-one will give you the Blood of Christ.

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A Holy Day of Obligation

Thursday, August 15 Mass Schedule

Wednesday, August 14 7:00 p.m.—Fr. Bob Goebel

Thursday, August 15 8:30 a.m.—Fr. Jack Wehman 7:00 p.m.—Fr. Jack Wehman

Sign Up for the Masses for the Feast of the Assumption

of the Blessed Virgin Mary If you are currently involved as a lector, gift bearer, minister of the Eucharist, or usher at a weekend Mass here at Good Shepherd, your help is needed at our Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Masses on Wednesday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 15 at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. If you are planning to attend one of these Masses, and wish to volunteer, please stop in or phone the parish office at 489-8815.

Eucharistic Exposition will not be held on Thursday, August 15 due to the Feast of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary that day.

First Reading—Wisdom 18:6-9: This passage recounts how God’s people patiently awaited God’s salvation. They had faith in God as they departed on their journey out of Egypt into the unknown—seeking the promised land. Second Reading—Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19: A community which grows tired of waiting for the Lord is told of faith. We hear of highlights of the story of Abraham and his great faith and trust in the Lord. The faith of Abraham is tracked through the test when God asks him to offer up in sacrifice his son, Isaac. We are told to trust in God. God will be faithful as we, just as the Israelites, journey into the unknown. Gospel—Luke 12:32-48: Jesus’ disciples are told not to fear and to look to their treasure in heaven. They, and we, are told to be vigilant—to be prepared for the Lord to come at any hour. Jesus then tells a parable where the master’s gratitude is shown when he returns to his property and finds that his servants have done well in their responsibilities. Christ says that greater expectations are held for those entrusted with much. We can ask ourselves, “does our faith in God give us a confident assurance that we are prepared for the unknown in our future?”

Next Parish Outreach Project—Your Input is Welcomed! As you may remember, the Good Shepherd Honduras Project started in November 2010, after a vote of parishioners, with a goal of raising $450,000 in three years in support of a remote, impoverished area in Honduras. Thanks to the generosity of Good Shepherd parishioners, the goal was surpassed and the bilingual school and parish house/faith formation center are now a reality. Prior to the Honduras Project, parishioners raised over $500,000 as part of the Millennium Promise to help empower an African village out of extreme poverty. In November of 2018, the Good Shepherd Assembly of Leaders approved initiatives for the 2019-20 fiscal year. One of the initiatives is to begin a new outreach effort. Discussions have taken place at two recent Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission meetings, and the consensus is to focus this next project closer to home. Parishioners are welcome to give their input to Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission members. Feel free to contact Deacon Mark Westendorf at 489-8815 ext. 714 or [email protected] for details.

Mindful Meditation

in a Chaotic World

Our Mindful Meditation and Practice Group will meet on Wednesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m. to consider the question of fostering meditation in a world

desperately in need of action interventions for the common good. Indeed, some would argue that meditating in our time of crisis can be a form of escape from reality. On the contrary, focused attentions and emotional balance is the foundation of effective leadership. Meditating mindfully results from “the gentle effort to be nonjudgmentally present in the moment to our experience.” Each evening, we watch an informative DVD and meditate, followed by discussion. All are welcome. Join us from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 25 each Wednesday evening. To help with planning, please let us know if you can come. E-mail Jack Peltz at [email protected] or leave Jack a voicemail at 489-8815 ext. 709.

Need to Know

Decree on Child Protection The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Decree on Child Protection is our way of protecting all of the vulnerable individuals in our community. If you suspect that someone is being abused, please contact the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse at the Archdiocese at 513-263-6623 as well as local law enforcement. In Hamilton County, you can contact Child Protective Services at 513-241-KIDS (5437). To Report Financial Misconduct If you suspect the misuse or misconduct of Church finances, you may call the EthicsPoint hotline at 1-888-389-0381 or see the Archdiocese website (www.catholiccincinnati.org) under Ministries & Offices, Finance and click the link “To Report Financial Misconduct.” You will be taken to a secure site to file your report.

For confidential information concerning annulments, please call Fr. Jack Wehman (ext. 748) or Emily Weierman (ext. 726) at 513-489-8815.

Welcoming We warmly welcome our new parishioners and guests who are joining us today. If you are interested in learning more about Good Shepherd, or would like to register as an official member of the parish, please stop by the Welcome Desk located in our main foyer. A member of our Welcoming Ministry will be honored to assist you.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.
