FROM THE DEPUTIES
PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS
This week’s Value is, “Thinking” with a focus on, “I think about doing my best”. No matter what you are doing, school work, jobs at home, sport, learning to play an instrument etc - If you are going to do it anyway why not try your best? Every day students come to school to learn – and we know that attendance and engagement at school help students to be more successful in life. During lessons, the key for students is to en-sure they are paying attention, following teacher instructions, completing all schoolwork and always following the school rules and values. Students are also always encouraged to ask ques-tions when they may not understand a new concept or the teach-er’s direction. We know students will not be able to do some things the first time and making mistakes is okay – it is often only through making mistakes that we actually learn anything! We all have different talents and abilities. There are very few of us who can excel in everything we do. But we can all take pride and satisfaction in knowing that we have done our best. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mr James Leach (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333. James Leach QUOTA Toowoomba celebrates reading with our Prep students In Wisconsin America, during 1997, the Police Department was called to a burglary that led the Police Officers to a warehouse full of books. The Police realised that these books should be in the hands, hearts and homes of children. They then filled the boots of their cars with these books and shared them with the children, reading to them on the streets and allowing the children to keep the books. QUOTA became aware of this project and the Kids’n’Cops Reading program was developed. This program now involves QUOTA Toowoomba purchasing a brand new book for each child enrolled in Prep. A copy of each of these books is also purchased for the library. The local sergeant, along with volunteers from QUOTA Toowoomba will come to school each week and read each child’s story with them. Jeni Neary, president of QUOTA Toowoomba will be here for Assembly this week to present the school with these books. Jeni and her team will join us this Friday at 11.25 am to launch the project through our, ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’. Moving Literacy Forward through Comprehension Strategies This year, our school improvement agenda has a focus on the improvement of Comprehension Strategies. Each week, I will share an idea that focusses on a specific Comprehension Strategy that you can discuss and practise with your child. Paragraph shrinking is an activity to assist with the skill of Summarising There are 3 steps to be completed when shrinking paragraphs. These are: 1. Name the who or what (the main person, animal or thing). 2. Tell the most important thing about the who or the what. 3. Say/Write the main idea in 10 words or less.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Our students are well and truly back into the swing of things here in the Senior School. After a hard week
of academic work, they turned their attention to sporting skills and teamwork with ball games training on
Friday afternoon. Despite a few teething troubles, a little practice saw every member of every team fo-
cussed on supporting their mates and being the first group to “finish their passes and sit on the grass”. They
all had a ball, literally!

TUCKSHOP NEWS I would like to let everyone know that I am resigning from my position as Convenor for the Darling Heights State School Tuckshop, as of Friday, 06.05.16. I will continue to convene the Uniform Shop as nor-mal, volunteer with the P&C Association, and am still a parent of a child at DHSS. Thankyou for all the support over my time in this posi-tion. It is certainly something I will miss immensely. Cheers Lee-Ann Tuckshop & Uniform Shop Convenor BOOK CLUB Book Club forms have been given out. Due date for orders is Wednesday 27 April. ATTENTION PARENTS OF PREP STUDETS Speech Sound Pics (SSP) literacy program infor-mation afternoon The Prep teachers are holding a follow-up infor-mation afternoon this Wednesday 20th April at 1.45pm in the school library. This will be a chance for you to gain valuable infor-mation to assist your child in their ongoing literacy learning and homework program beginning this week. Please see your classroom teacher if you are unable to attend. SING OUT 2016 At the end of this term, the 5/6 singers will be involved in SING OUT. Sing Out is a non-competitive Choral Festival for Upper Primary School Choirs and is held once every two years. The highlight of the festival is a concert which is given by choirs from about 15 schools who combine to perform in a massed choir of about 800 singers. Each choir is also invited to per-form an item at the concert. For the concert, the 5/6 singers will be expected to wear their choir uniform which consists of long black pants, long sleeved white shirt (boy style) and black shoes. The subsidised cost for each student to participate in Sing Out will be $5. Permission notes will be sent out within the next week with further details so please keep an eye out for that.
FLORAL CROSS FOR ANZAC DAY—FLOWERS NEEDED On Friday 22 April at 9.00am we will be having the annual Anzac Day Assembly. As occurs every year, we will be decorating a floral cross for the service. The cross will then be donated to Westhaven RSL Retirement Village. If you wish to provide some flow-ers for the floral cross, please bring them on Friday 22nd of April in the morning before school. ADMINISTRATION REFURBISHMENT Work continues on the renovations to the Administra-
tion Block. Part of the work includes a new covered
walkway and entrance off Wuth Street. This will lead
to a new and larger foyer. We eagerly await comple-
tion - expected to be 7 - 10 days.
