Thrifty kitty Sale Outgrows ShelterOur Thrifty Kitty and Bargain Hound Garage Sale has become a popular event attended by hundreds of “bargain hounds” each year.

However, the sale has grown so much that it has become difficult to store and sort all the items we receive. Also due to the possibility of bad weather, like the torrential rains we had last year, it has become apparent that it is no longer feasible to have it here at the shelter.

The only way we can hold it again is if we can find a large, covered, donated space with plenty of parking that we can use for about a month starting in May. If anyone has such a place and is willing to help, please contact Kim Jess at 374-3944, ext. 119.

OuR mISSION The purpose of the APF is to address pet overpopulation and animal suffering through education and appropriate action, to enhance human/animal relationships, and to provide care to animals in need.

Sarah came to us as a timid 5-month-old pit bull mix whose owner could not afford her care. She was shy and nervous, but within days of her arrival on August 3, 2010 her true spirit began to emerge. Sarah was a cuddler and a kisser. We couldn’t understand why, month after month, she was overlooked.

It’s hard to live in a shelter for so long. Although we provide walks and play time, there still isn’t enough time outside of the kennel. Over time some negative behaviors can emerge. One is barrier aggression. It is a protective reaction, similar to that of a dog in a parked car who barks when approached, but outside of the car is fine.

Sarah was beginning to show this behavior. When people approached her kennel, she barked furiously. This behavior nearly cost Sarah her best chance of adoption.

One day, a young woman named Laurie came to visit Sarah.

She was excited to meet her, but when Laurie approached Sarah she barked and growled. She began to wonder if perhaps this was the reason Sarah went unadopted for so long. Laurie left the shelter disappointed and heartbroken.

The next day, Laurie attended an adoption clinic at PetSmart. Coincidentally, a volunteer from Peppertree Rescue had offered to take Sarah to the clinic for us. When Laurie saw Sarah, she did a double take. Could this be the same dog? Indeed it was, and today her behavior was completely different. Sarah quickly warmed up to Laurie and, long story short, after 159 days at the APF, Sarah found a wonderful new home.

We knew how special Sarah was. But if our friends from Peppertree had not given her an opportunity to be seen in a different light, Sarah might still be homeless.

See Sarah’s photo in our “We’ve Gone Home” section.

Day 159: Sarah goes Home

Reunited After Five years

Imagine getting a call that your cat who went missing five years ago had been found. That is the call we recently made to Tim and Elisa Carleton of Niskayuna.

Ginger was found one frigid evening wandering outside of the shelter. Although friendly, she ran away, so we set a trap for her. Within a few hours she was safe and warm inside.

We scanned her for a microchip and were thrilled when one was detected. Elisa couldn’t believe it when we told her that “Ginger” was alive healthy. How she ended up at the shetler and where she had been for the past five years remains a mystery. But one thing is known for certain – without the microchip, this reunion would never have happened.

Ginger is enjoying being back at home with her family and getting reacquainted with her long lost feline friends.

Ginger was reunited with her family after five years!

Wikipedia defines Somebody Else’s Problem (also known as SEP) as a circumstance that causes people to ignore matters which are generally important to a group but may not seem specifically important to the individual.

This is the story of a conscious choice made by two friends of the APF and a vow they made to a special dog that she would not become somebody else’s problem.

It was a frigid night in January when Brett spotted what he thought to be a fox standing in front of his house. Looking more closely he realized it was a dog. She was extremely thin and feeble, barely able to walk. Brett could have gone into SEP mode, but instead he immediately brought the dog inside. She had no identification tags and looked as if she had been on her own for quite some time.

The next day he and his partner Rob took her to their vet where, without extensive testing, the veterinarian would be unable to give them a prognosis. Brett and Rob knew that this dog needed immediate medical attention. She was not somebody else’s problem at that moment; she was alone and scared and they could not walk away. Even though money was tight they agreed that they would do whatever it took to give this dog a chance.

After a few days, they were able to bring “Abbi” home. They had made the decision to keep her comfortable for as long as they could and let her know that she was loved. That is exactly what they did. They gave Abbi all the love and care that she needed and had probably not known for some time. At the end of two weeks it was quite apparent that she was not responding to treatment and Brett and Rob knew that it was time to let her go.

You may think that this is a sad story, but I think that Abbi would disagree. How many people passed by her on that cold Sunday night and many nights before, only to dismiss her as Somebody Else’s Problem? I believe that the brief time spent with Brett and Rob was maybe the happiest time of her life. Because of these two compassionate people, Abbi had the chance to experience the kind of love and security she deserved, especially in her final days.

There are so many unwanted animals like Abbi that could be considered “somebody else’s problem.” But once they walk through our doors, they become our responsibility. We are grateful to all of you who share our responsibility to the animals by supporting our work.
