FROM THE PRINCIPAL

In last week’s Cooee I wrote about the national definition of bullying for Australian schools which says: “Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physi-cal and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).” This week, I refer to the definitions of discrimination and violence as per the policy. Discrimination Discrimination occurs when people are treated less favourably than others because of their:

identity, race, culture or ethnic origin

religion

physical characteristics

gender

sexual orientation

marital, parenting or economic status

age

ability or disability.

Violence Violence is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against another person(s) that results in psychological harm, injury or in some cases death. It may involve pro-voked or unprovoked acts and can be a single incident, a random act or can occur over time. These definitions outline key characteristics and have been taken from Student Wellbeing Hub https://studentwellbeinghub.edu.au/resources-and-help/Glossary?origin-host=www.safeschoolshub.edu.au#/ Until next week,

PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS

The Value for this week is, “Safety” with a focus on, “I sit and move appropriately in the classroom”. Darling Heights State School is a place where students can learn in a safe and supportive environment. In order to keep our students safe, each classroom has a set of rules and expectations for students to follow. This week, teachers will be reinforcing the reasons why students must:

Sit safely in chairs and on the floor

Keep hands and feet to yourself

Always walk when moving inside

A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 4636 8333.

NAPLAN 2017 The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is held during May each year and in 2018 the tests will be held on Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th May. Please note these dates in your diaries and calendars so as to avoid making any appointments on the testing days. NAPLAN is a national assessment program for all schools and all Year 3 & 5 students are expected to participate. The purpose of this testing is to provide information on how Australian students are performing in the areas of numeracy, reading, writing, and language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar). It is one tool for parents and schools to gauge student performance and it tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The NAPLAN results, in conjunction with school reports (both formal and informal) give an indication of your child’s skills and knowledge. The data from the test results gives schools the ability to compare their students’ achievements against national standards. Withdrawing Students from NAPLAN Students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers in consultation with the school. Please inform the school by Wednesday the 3rd May if you want your child withdrawn from test-ing. There is also the provision for adjustments to be made for students who have a medical condition or learning difficulties. We have identified some of these students and a letter will go home to their parents with a form to sign and return to school. Any students who are absent for any of the tests will have the opportunity to catch-up these tests on the Thursday afternoon or on the Friday of NAPLAN testing week. If you wish to know more about NAPLAN, please visit the website http://www.nap.edu.au/.

Did you know that every Monday afternoon we have an Indigenous Homework Club? We meet in the Library just after

3.00 for afternoon tea, some homework and some fun, finishing up at 4.30pm on the dot. If you are interested in finding

out about this great opportunity, please contact Ricky Adams on [email protected] by phoning 4636 8367.

At Darling Heights State School we say, ‘Bullying. No Way!’ and on Friday, the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, we came together to take a stand against bullying. All children joined in class activities about stopping bullying and looking after each oth-er. There was drama, art, writing, singing, role plays and sto-ries. Please take a few minutes to talk to your child about what they did. We helped each other to tie orange ribbons on our front fence to share our Bullying. No Way! message with our community. Why not drive or walk past to see just how fabulous it looks? The activities on Friday followed our whole school assembly when Mrs Clements spoke about the importance of looking after each other and how all of us, as bystanders to bullying, have super powers to stop it. She shared a video about using our super powers. Mr Creedon and Mr Gilbert performed a short dramatic skit about what bullying may look like. Mr Creedon shared how bullying made him feel and Mr Gilbert gave him some good sugges-tions on what he should do. Further information can be found at government’s website. https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/
