Each year the Italian American Cultural Society offers a wonderful opportunity to high school students to obtain two semesters of Italian language at the Italian American Cultural Center. Applicants are required to submit an essay: “Why I Would Like To Study Italian”; a cover letter including biographical sketch; reason for wanting the award.

On Thursday, July 24, at the IACS General Membership Meeting, two scholarships will be awarded for two semesters of Italian education at the Center beginning in September through April. In

addition, the winners of the scholarships will receive a letter of recommendation for college.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Giovanna DiMaria and Gabriel Consiglio.

Giovanna DiMaria has been studying Italian for about two years and would enjoy learning more. In Italian class, she has made many close friends that she enjoys speaking Italian with. They have grown together in the language and have advanced toward their goals of speaking fluently in this beautiful language.

Giovanna’s entire family is from Italy. Before she began the Italian program in 2012, she couldn’t understand Italian very well, but now, she is able to communicate with cousins and friends in Italy. Italian is a big part of her life, and she wants to continue her studies.

Gabriel Consiglio’s grandmother, Anna, will be 90 years old in July. Since his two sisters and he were young children, Anna enrolled them in classes at the Italian American Cultural Center. Gabriel’s hope is to become fluent in the Italian language so that one day he may pass it on to his children, and in turn, they can pass it on to theirs. Gabriel has been working hard at learning Italian for many years. In his first few years, his sister and he were in a classroom full of other children their age. They learned basic words. After the first few years were completed, he moved up into a more advanced class. He started learning how to conjugate verbs; how to decide the ending of adjectives and plural nouns and other essential parts of the language. Mrs. Sugameli helped my other classmates and I thrive in the language and gain a much better understanding of it. I will put the Italian language to great use, in my future life, and in my present one.

On behalf of the IACS Italian Education Department, Board of Directors, and membership, we congratulate these bright students and wish them continued success.

IACS Italian Education Scholarship Winners for 2014

An actor, vocalist, and overall “master of character”. Eric is a graduate of The American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City. He has been fortunate to portray many roles over the years, including King Arthur (Camelot), Fagin (Oliver), Atticus (To Kill a Mockingbird), The Count (Dracula) and Edward Rutledge (1776). The 2nd National Tour of the original Broadway hit, Annie will always be an especially memorable two year adventure (including five sold-out months at the Desert Inn in Vegas), as Eric performed numerous roles, including being understudy to Tony Award winner, Gary Beach’s “Rooster Hannigan”. He has also twice directed its production, with his wife, Patty, as choreographer. The recent film, Burn After Reading, found Eric appearing

to have a fine time singing with John Malkovich and fellow “Princetonians”. (Some have even commented on his eerie resemblance to Dino) Other credits include principal roles in ABC-TV’s Line of Fire, America’s Most Wanted, John Water’s Cecil B. Demented. Eric can also be found haunting the backgrounds of numerous films and TV dramas. Eric’s approach to any character lies in the detail, which makes every one of his characters unique and whole. His pursuit of Dean Martin’s essential onstage creating Dino! A Tribute to Dean Martin, is ongoing, and most creatively rewarding. In addition to his tribute performances to Dean Martin, Eric also creates essential characters portrayed by Gregory Peck, including Atticus Finch, General Douglas MacArthur and Abraham Lincoln.

On June 8, the St. Louis Center achieved a n o t h e r milestone with the dedication of the beautifully renovated Fr. Guanella Hall for Assisted Living. St. Louis Center has been caring for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) since 1960. Over the years their focus has expanded from children to young adults. With many of their residents aging in place, they recognized a need to adapt the facilities to serve older persons with I/DD. In the process, they have created a model for other organizations to emulate.

The day’s festivities started with a noon mass, celebrated by the most Reverend Earl Boyea, Bishop of Lansing, assisted by Monsignor Steven Raica, Chancellor of the Diocese of Lansing and Reverend Dr. William J. Turner, Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Chelsea. In addition, he was assisted by priests from the Servants of Charity from near and far, including Fr. Enzo Addari, Administrator of the St. Louis Center, Fr. Joseph Rinaldo, provincial Treasurer, Fr. Gustavo DeBonis, 4th General Councillor and General Secretary, who travelled from Rome for the ceremony and delivered a blessing from

Pope wonderful, Reverend Fr. Visuwasam, 2nd Provincial Councillor, DPP, Springfield, PA, and Reverend Fr. Soosai Rathinam, Provincial of Divine Providence Province,

Reverend Fr. Dennis Weber, 3rd Provincial Councillor, DPP, and the Rev. Fr. Kulandaisamy, 4th Provincial Councillor, DPP, all from India.

Mass was followed by the blessing of Fr. Guanella Hall and a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony. Many state, county, and local dignitaries were on hand to offer their congratulations, including State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus Michael Malinowski, Larry Doll, Chair of the SLC Community Advisory Council, Donald Walker, Representative

of the SLC Legacy Campaign Committee, Renee Adorjan, Director of Department of Human Services for Washtenaw County, Honorable State Senator Rebekah Warren, Honorable State Senator Glenn Anderson, Wayne County Executive

Robert Ficano, Washtenaw County Commissioner Kent Martinez-Dratz , and Mayor of Chelsea Jason Lindauer. Andrew Shmina, President of A.Z, Shmina, Inc., general contractors for the project, and Bob McGraw, President and CEO of Kignscott Architects, spoke about how gratifying it was to have been involved with the project.

After the speeches, the two hundred guests enjoyed a buffet lunch and the opportunity to tour the beautiful new facility. Congratulations to Fr. Enzo, the staff and the residents of the St. Louis Center on this wonderful achievement.

The 11th Annual Beautiful Baby Contest will be held on Sunday, July 20th, at one o’clock in the afternoon, at Freedom Hill County Park.

Our Beautiful Babies need to be at least 25% Italian and will be judged within six age groups: Six months – 12 months; 13 months – 18 months; 19 months – 24 months; toddlers age three years; four years; and children five years old.

All babies, toddlers, and children up to age five participating will receive gifts, and one winner from each age group will receive a $50 gift card.

To enter the contest, please

This “could be” sugar-induc-ing coma contest is always among the most anticipated events at the Italian Festival. Speed-eaters are shamelessly challenged to wolf down as many messy/sticky cannoli within six minutes.

Enter to beat Salvatore Aiel-lo, last year’s winner, as he set the record – stuffing 12 cannoli down his throat in six minutes. Not a pretty sight, but he did win a plaque – 2013 World Cannoli-Eating Championship. Will he try to defend his record again?

On Saturday, July 19th, once again Macomb County Judges, Hon. Peter Maceroni, Hon. Mi-chael Maceroni, Hon. Sebastian Lucido, will put their taste buds to the test and determine which contestant cooked and brought to the Italian festival the “ul-timate” meatballs.

Judging begins 2:30 p.m. and is based on the overall taste of the juicy ground meats; fresh ingredients; exquisite sea-sonings or sauce. There are two categories, Individual and Restaurant meatballs, and a trophy is awarded to the winner of each category.

So, bring a dozen of your famous meatballs in sauce and let the Judges decide! It is a difficult sampling/eating chore for the judges, but someone has to do it.

Ever wish you could learn to speak a few more words than “Ciao” or “Buon Appetito” in a relaxed and friendly environ-ment without the pressure of exams and lengthy homework?

Italian lessons for adults and children are now being offered by the Italian American Cultur-al Society in Clinton Township, Michigan. Courses range from

Saturday morning children’s lessons to weeknight classes for adults, with beginning to ad-vanced language skills.

The comprehensive lessons in-clude reading, writing, vocabu-lary, conversation, and cultural introductions. They are taught by native Italian speakers with teaching degrees, yet have the social feeling of meeting up with a few friends or taking a

quick trip to Italy.

Learning Italian and other languages has proven to help children understand English grammar, too. Children have workbooks and other materi-als including music at their grade levels to help them learn the language without the pres-sure of taking tests and having homework.

The focus for the adults, on the other hand, is on develop-ing stronger conversation skills to help with a visit to Italy or to keep language skills sharp. There is a perfect course level waiting for you.

Contact the Italian American Cultural Society today to find the right course for you. Adult semester classes begin the week

of Monday, September 8, 2014, and all classes are from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The Saturday children’s courses are school-year long. The first class is on September 27, 2014.

For more information, visit the IACS website – www.iac-sonline.com or call the Center for specific days and times at 586.228-3030.

Finally, Chairman of the Council of Presidents Domenico Ruggirello concluded the program with his comments. He thanked everyone who worked hard to make the day a success and all those in attendance. After a stirring rendition of “Va Pensiero”, the audience visited the tables representing the various Italian clubs and organizations where they admired the displays and sampled the delicacies offered.

Pino Marelli provided the musical entertainment from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and got the crowd dancing. The Italian American Chamber of Commerce provided free pizza to make the day complete.

State Rep Anthony Forlini and Dr. Maria Luisa Lapresa, Consul of Italy

The Italian American community of metropolitan Detroit gathered at the IACS on June 1 to celebrate the sixty-eighth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Italy. The program started with the beautiful music of the Coro Italiano, led by Luigi and Angela LaMarra. It was wonderful to note that there were new singers and musicians among their ranks, which bodes well for the continuation of this great musical tradition. Representatives of the various Italian clubs paraded in carrying their colorful flags.

Mr. Enzo Paglia, President of the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan and treasurer of the IACS, was the master of ceremonies for the afternoon. Enzo acknowledged notable guests in the audience, including Judge Peter J. Maceroni, Clinton Township Supervisor Robert J. Cannon, attorney and past president of the IACS Anthony J. Bellanca, Gualberto Ranieri of Fiat Chrysler, and guest speaker State Representative John Forlini. President of the IACS Mr. Giovanni LoIacono welcomed everyone and expressed his pleasure at seeing the Italian community come together for this great event.

Dr. Maria Luisa Lapresa,

Consul of Italy in Detroit, greeted the audience and shared an exciting a n n o u n c e m e n t . Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has bestowed the honor of Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, the Italian equivalent of knighthood, upon Mr. Franco Iaderosa. Mr. Iaderosa has been the president of the Nuovi Orizzonti Italiani (NOI) Foundation since its inception in 1997. Dr. Lapresa made the award on behalf of the Italian president. (See related article.)

The next speaker was Mr.

Lino Scamardella, president of COMITES. Lino thanked all the distinguished guests for their attendance, and Mr. Domenico Ruggirello and the volunteers from the Council of Presidents for organizing the event. He also expressed

his gratitude to Giovanni LoIacono for making the IACS available once again for this annual celebration. Lino stated “The second of June is an important moment in our Italian history, as it truly celebrates freedom and a great time of Italian

liberty and advancement. The Festa della Repubblica also celebrates the rights of human beings and demonstrates how much stronger we are when we work together, and how together we can overcome adversity and fight for our freedoms.”

The guest speaker was Mr. Anthony Forlini, Michigan State Representative from District 24. Mr. Forlini is the son of Italian immigrants, with a background that the audience could relate to. His mother came from a small village in the province of Trapani in Sicily called Buseto Palizzolo. His father came from Pignataro

Interamna, in the province of Frosinone. Representative Forlini has held a public office since 2004, when he was elected Harrison Township Supervisor. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2010, where he has worked hard to get his bills passed on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee, is chair of the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, and is vice-chair of the Department of

Representing the youth of our community were guest speakers David Basirico and Julia Smith. David is a 2014 graduate of Macomb Dakota High School who will attend Central Michigan University on a football scholarship. David is the grandson of Horace and Michelle Basirico, who emigrated from Italy to Michigan in 1960. His parents are Dave and Jennie Basirico, and his siblings are Abbey and Luke.

Julia just completed her freshman year at Henry Ford High School in Sterling Heights. She is the daughter of Matthew and Mary (Silverio) Smith, older sister to Sarah, and the granddaughter of Dianello and Celestina Silverio. The IACS Council of Presidents hosted a bocce tournament on May 29 and 30 to commemorate the Festa della Repubblica. Sixteen club teams participated, under the direction of Antonio DiGiorgio. The weather was perfect and the IACS courts were in great shape, thanks to the tender loving care administered by Antonio and Elio Ripari.

Organizations represented

were Americans of Italian Origin (AIO), Bocciofila di Mario Signorelli ( s p o n s o r e d by Francesco B e l c a s t r o ) , Calabria Cub,

Cepranese Club, Conca d’Oro Club, Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan (FADM), Federazione Siciliana del Michigan, Gagliano Aterno Club, IACS Seniors, Italian American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Mazzarra del Vallo Club, San Giuseppe Club, and San Vito Lo Capo Club. A FADM team consisting of Elio Ripari, Carlo DiVirgilio, Roberto Cicchelli, and Dante Gallucci won the tournament.

Bocce players and spectators enjoyed sausage sandwiches and salad. The sausage was donated by Rinaldi Sausage and was grilled to perfection by Jim and Liz Calderone. The AIO donated the peppers and onions, and Joann Ruggirello donated the salad. And of course, John LoIacono donated the buns. The IACS Council of Presidents is thankful for everyone who worked to make the tournament a success.

The IACS President and Board of Directors were gratified to see the bocce courts used by the entire Italian community as envisioned, and look forward to hosting this annual event.

This year’s Festa della Repubblica celebration was noteworthy as Mr. Franco Iaderosa was awarded the highest honor of the Republic of Italy, the Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Order of Merit of the Italian Republic). Dr. Maria Luisa Lapresa, Consul of Italy in Detroit, on behalf of President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano, bestowed the honor.

The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic was founded in 1951 by the second President of the Italian Republic, Luigi Einaudi, as the senior order of knighthood. The honor is awarded for “merit acquired by the nation” in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities and for long and conspicuous service in civilian and military careers. Investiture takes place biannually on June 2, anniversary of the foundation of the Republic and on December 27, anniversary of the promulgation of the Italian Constitution.

Mr. Iaderosa was born in Cervino, in the province of Caserta, came to Detroit at the age of seventeen and attended the University of Michigan. He taught mathematics and computers in the Detroit Public Schools for thirty-seven years, retiring in 2013. He and his wife Angela have two children, Nina and Marco.

Mr. Iaderosa has been the director of the Nuovi Orizzonti Italiani (NOI) Foundation, Inc. since its formation in 1997. The mission of the

NOI Foundation is to ”introduce, create and promote courses of Italian language and culture within the regular curriculum of private and public schools from kindergarten to twelfth grade.” Mr. Iaderosa has worked tirelessly to promote this mission. The foundation was created in response to the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy requesting the organization and promotion of courses in the Italian language in the area governed by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit. Since its inception NOI has increased he number of students enrolled in Italian classes to over 3,500 in Michigan and Ohio.

In his remarks, Mr. Iaderosa told the audience that he was proud and happy to receive the honor and proud to be part of this positive community that works together to overcome obstacles. He was also humbled by the honor, stating that there are others that have done more than he. Mr. Iaderosa commended State Representative Anthony Forlini for “putting the weight of his office” behind the endeavor of increasing the number of school districts offering Italian classes. He told the audience that the Italian community owes Mr. Forlini a debt of gratitude. Mr. Forlini recently succeeded in obtaining appointments for Mr. Iaderosa with three Macomb County school districts: Chippewa Valley, L’Anse Creuse, and Lakeshore.

On behalf of President, Board of Directors, and membership of the IACS, congratulations to Mr. Iaderosa on this well-deserved honor. Thank you for all that you do to promote the Italian language and culture.

Tribute To My Brother Frank

By Alfonso Chirco

He was older than me. We grew up in Cinisi until we came to America. He was 19, and I was 13 years; he had many friends in Cinisi and made many more here.

Frank enjoyed singing and telling jokes; his hobby was building train tracks with a city around it – mainly the town of Cinisi. My brother was a handyman and could do anything, Shoemaker by trade, plumbing, and mastered to sharpening saws. He was doing precision work at his job, without any education to read instructions. Frank was known as Mastro Ciccio, by all that knew him, including us members of the family.

Frank was handicapped and limped from when he had polio at small age of 18 months. His saying, “If I have my father’s genes, I will live to be 100. He died at age 59.

Now after 20 years have gone by, Frank is still remembered by our friends. “Amico di tutti”, Everybody’s friend.

To My Brother Frank (Mastro Ciccio)July 28 1935- July 1 1994

When I was young, I looked for your guidance,And there you were, you gave me assurance. You kept me from wanting, and you gave to me,It was on your bicycle, I wanted to be.

You had a lot of friends, that were attached to you, Mastro Ciccio, that’s what they referred to.You earned that title, with the people you knewThe shoemaker, (carparo), that’s how they knew you.

Your records and trains were what people enjoyed,And in your basement, is where you gave them joy. They came to visit you, with the kids and family. It was Mastro Ciccio they wanted to see.

And when on a bus trip, with friends you went Mastro Ciccio, who made them, pee their pants. You would sing and tell jokes all the way home.Friends wouldn’t stop laughing; they wanted more.

In America we came, our father and sister Nini. That much closer, we got to be.The trust we built; it was all there,Each other’s advice was what we shared.

And when for my house, I needed some things doneYou would tell me, don’t worry; we’ll get it done. You mastered the plumbing, the saw sharpening, too. There wasn’t anything, you didn’t know how to do.

When at Ford field, it was down home days. The sausage on the bun, made your day. Then the Romeo peach festival, on Labor Day, You prepared all year, not to miss that day. The Fourth of July, was about to come, It was that weekend, that all came undone. My Nephew Sam, called me on the phone, To tell me, his Daddy was already gone. When rushing to the hospital,The Family, waiting for me, My eyes were wet, I could not see, You looked so helpless, lying on your backThey said, you had a massive heart attack. That was the last, of my Brother Frank. Our mother asked God, how could this be?My daughter and my son, why not me?Our father said, this is too hard to bearI am an old man, this isn’t fair.

Your daughter Margherita looks at me.She says, Uncle Al, it’s my daddy I see. While you peacefully rest in peace With your son Anthony on your side.Your wife is dealing, with what’s left behind. The friends were shocked, of that news affect That everyone came, to pay you respect.

Now many years have gone by And many of our family have gone with you.

In Loving MemoriesYour Brother, Alfonso and Mary Chirco & Family

In tutta risposta re Giorgio inviò altre truppe nelle colonie.

The British are coming, the British are coming”, i britannici stanno arrivando.

È Tony Pagoda, il cantante n a p o l e t a n o m e l o d i c o ,

Filippo Mazzei nacque a Poggio a Caiano in Toscana.

I docenti saranno Dottor Raffaele DeBenedictis, Professoressa Elena Past, Professoressa Giovanna Cappi, e Profesoressa Silvia Giorgini-Althoen.

Ci saranno venti studenti dell’Ateneo Univaq e venti
