Come Out For LGBT - Fundraise for Stonewall

Whatever you do, however you do it, it’s time to COME OUT FOR LGBT in your school. Our research LGBT in Britain highlights shocking levels of hate crime and discrimination that LGBT people still face every day, in all parts of life. Read the report at: www.stonewall.org.uk/comeoutforLGBT/lgbt-in-britain/hate-crime.

THE STUDYBased on YouGov polling of over 5000 LGBT people, the research reveals that anti-LGBT abuse extends far beyond acts of hate and violence on our streets. Some of the key findings from LGBT in Britain

• One in five LGBT people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the last 12 months

• Two in five trans people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their gender identity in the last 12 months

• A quarter of trans people (25 per cent) have experienced homelessness

• Four in five anti-LGBT hate crimes and incidents go unreported, with younger LGBT people particularly reluctant to go to the police

• Almost half (48 per cent) of trans people don’t feel comfortable using public toilets through fear of discrimination or harassment

• More than a third of LGBT people (36 per cent) say they don’t feel comfortable walking down the street while holding their partner’s hand. This increases to three in five gay men (58 per cent)

1LGBT IN BRITAIN

HATE CRIME AND DISCRIMINATION LGBT IN BRITAIN

Dear Supporter,

You’ve already shown your support for LGBT equality by holding a fundraising event for Stonewall – and now we’d like to help you do it again.

This guide is packed with exciting ideas for events and activities that can help raise money for our vital work. They range from the more traditional – like having a collection – to something the whole school can get involved with, like a dressing up day or an Equali-tea party.

The guide walks you through the steps and dos and don’ts so that you get the most fun – and funds – from whatever it is you choose to do.

What you do is entirely up to you of course – but it’s important that you do something.

Last year, one in five LGBT people experienced a hate crime and nearly half of British LGBT children are still being bullied in their schools. Same-sex relationships are still illegal in 72 countries. This has to change.

Your fundraising event will help make that happen, as we work with schools, governments, workplaces, service providers and communities to ensure every LGBT person can live without fear of discrimination, persecution or prejudice.

Come out for LGBT once again – it’s simple, fun and raises funds to change hearts and minds. Thank you for everything you do.

Thank you for everything you do.

INSPIRATION

By hosting a Stonewall fundraising event, you can campaign for equality, increase awareness and change hearts and minds in your school and community. These aren’t just words – the impact you have will be crucial. £5 means we can be there to answer a call from a young LGBT person through our free information service. £25 can send five packs to teachers around Britain, to help give them the skills to tackle homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying in their school.

£50 could fund an LGBT role model to visit a school, tackling negative attitudes head on and helping young people to accept LGBT people without exception.

£100 would allow us to cover the cost of one young person in a hard to reach area to attend a Stonewall Youth Pride event and meet other LGBT young people. £250 could support one years’ worth of costs for Stonewall to meet with MPs, institutions and other stakeholders to lobby them around the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).

£500 Could cover the cost of one young person to attend our annual Young Campaigners programme, a five-day residential programme for 16-21 year-old LGBT people to support them to develop campaigns on LGBT issues in their local community. £1,500 would allow us to bring international activists to the UK, exchanging knowledge and sharing the most effective campaigning tactics to help improve the lives of LGBT people around the world.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL DO

School Role Model visitSarah, Royal Parks Half Marathon“My advice to anyone who’s toying with taking on any sort of major challenge on behalf of Stonewall is: just do it. If I can start running and then run a half-marathon then anything is possible!

I knew it was going to be tough but I now have a massive feeling of personal achievement, and I know I’ve done something to improve the lives of other LGBT people by raising some much-needed funds in the process.”

Sarah, Royal Parks Half Marathon, pictured left

Epping St John school“Epping St John’s sought the opportunity to celebrate all of the achievements of the LGBT community in a variety of ways. One of those ways was to raise money for an LGBT charity of the students’ choice and they chose Stonewall. We held a colourful cake sale getting students, parents/carers and staff involved in all aspects from baking to decorating the stall to selling and of course eating! It truly was a wonderful celebration.”

Daniella Perry, Teacher

Nick, University College London“Holding an event to support Stonewall is a great opportunity to show all students that you care about LGBT equality. It’s a fantastic way to bring everyone together. At UCL we wanted everybody to be able to make the most their time at university regardless of their gender or sexuality, and that is a whole lot easier if you are coming into a welcoming and inclusive environment. The knowledge gained and experiences shared at university shape who we become and what we go on to do.”

HOLD AN EVENT FOR EQUALITYIn need of some inspiration? We’ve come up with a range of different ways you can take action for LGBT equality and fundraise for Stonewall.

HOLD AN EQUALI-TEAGetting a group of people together over a cup of tea is a great way to start conversations. Whether Jasmine, Earl Grey or PG Tips is your bag, why not have a go at holding a simple Equali-tea near you?

Where do I start?

You can hold an Equali-tea anywhere you choose! Whether that’s at home, school, work or at your local community centre. Get in touch with friends, family, colleagues and local groups that you’re a part of and let them know you’ll be holding a Stonewall Equali-tea. Download some of our LGBT conversation starters from our website www.stonewall.org.uk/equali-tea and order posters/leaflets from the resources page to hand out.

How to fundraise

Order a collection tin from [email protected] and ask for small donations for tea, coffee, soft drinks or cake.

RAINBOW LACES SPORTS TOURNAMENT Are you part of a sports club or recreational team? Celebrate LGBT people in sport with Rainbow Laces. Having an entire team lace up for a practice, game or tournament sends a strong message to LGBT players and fans that they can be themselves.

Where do I start?

Check out Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces Fundraising Toolkit at www.stonewall.org.uk/resources/rainbow-laces-sports-tool-kit to inform your event.

How to fundraise

• Sell Rainbow Laces and Captain’s Armbands at your match or in the lead up to it.

• Hold a collection at your next game or match.• Ask players to sell Rainbow Laces to their friends and families • You can sell the laces for as much or as little as you like but we

find £3 is the sweet spot.

HOST AN LGBT MUSIC NIGHT Cabarets, Open Mic nights, Battle of the Bands, and more. A music event is a brilliant way of showcasing the diverse talent in your area.

Where do I start?

Get in touch with local musicians and bands, ask them to come on-board for an amazing night celebrating LGBT life and culture. Contact your local LGBT venue, bar, coffee shop or community space to book a space and cross promote.

How to fundraise:

• Charge an entry fee and make sure everyone knows it’s for charity.• Order a collection tin from [email protected]

and ask your performers to encourage the crowd to be generous.• Donate a portion of the profits from the night to Stonewall.

TIP!

TIP!

Are there regularly scheduled LGBT music nights in your area? Consider collaborating with the promoters and co-hosting the night.

Play a sport that doesn’t require laces? Get creative! We’ve seen everything from rainbow hockey sticks to wickets and we’ve seen laces laced through plaited hair!

HOST AN LGBT DINNER PARTY OR FILM NIGHT - AIM FOR £40

Show off your culinary talents by wow-ing your guests with a scrumptious menu or bring LGBT films to the forefront for a special evening. There are so many amazing LGBT films that reflect our vibrant community and tackle outdated stereotypes and discrimination, yet many remain underrepresented.

How to fundraise:

• Ask friends and family to donate a set amount to come over and watch an LGBT film.

• Charge your dinner party guests for a delicious three course menu.

QUIZ IT UP FOR EQUALITY - AIM FOR £50 Everyone loves a quiz. They’re a simple way of having some fun and learning a thing or two at the same time. Make it a Stonewall special by including an LGBT focused round.

Where do I start?

Contact your local pub, café or community centre and ask if you can hire a free room or space for your quiz. Alternatively, save on costs and host it at home!

How to fundraise:

• Ask everyone to ‘pay to play’ either in advance or on the door.

TIP!

TIP!Take team building to the next level by having a round moulding celebrities out of plasticine and get the quiz-master to judge the winner.

Update your online giving page with training updates and progress.

Walking’s a great way to exercise. You can do it everywhere, it’s social and it saves on bus fares. These two walking plans from Stonewall mean every step you take will bring us that bit closer to LGBT equality.

Solo challenge

Turn your walk to the shops or the train station into a fundraising opportunity. Choose how far you want to walk in a week, month or year or set a fundraising target. Get others to sponsor you, lace up your shoes and you’re off. How far will you go for equality?

How to fundraise:

• Purchase a pair of Rainbow Laces and create an online giving page at www.virginmoneygiving.com/giving to start fundraising. Then get walking!

Ask your family, friends, neighbours, school mates or colleagues to join you in a group walk around your local park, school field or campus. It’s a fun way to get some fresh air and exercise - and raise some cash for LGBT equality. If you plan to hold your walk in a public space, please ask your local council for permission first.

How to fundraise:

• Ask everyone taking part to donate £2. Create placards with inspirational messages and plan your distance (we suggest one mile maximum).

COME OUT WALKING.

COME OUT WALKING.

THE BIG ONE.

• Spread the word – Order some Stonewall resources and posters to display in your school common areas at www.stonewall.org.uk/our-work/ education-resources

Take the time to make your event truly special and consider if there are other ways that you can bring people together to continue to strive for LGBT equality.

• Have you thought about the diversity of your event? Make sure all LGBT people, regardless of background, feel included.

• Activists in the archives – get in touch with your local council or LGBT organisations and see if you can delve into the archives for a historic look at LGBT life and culture to inform your event.

• Get in touch with other groups in your local area and invite them along!

• LGBT book exchange – choose a quiet location in your town and encourage people to share their stories by swapping books with others.
