It is my fervent desire that you are able to experience the gifts that the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords offers you, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year. On behalf of the entire staff of St. Thomas More Parish, we are grateful for your presence here by joining us in worship and prayer; by giving “Glory to God in the Highest.” You are always welcome in this church, this parish, this community of faith. We invite you to experience the Light of Christ, which nothing can douse or snuff out. It is that Light which brings us comfort so that we never have to fear the darkness. It is that Light of Christ that we are called to share with others.

A blessed and merry Christmas to you.

Msgr. Tom Rice

A Note From Our Pastor

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

One of my favorite things about Christmas is the lights. My enjoyment of Christmas lights is that it serves as an antidote for what we face around this time of year. It gets dark so early here in Michigan. Sunset is less than 6 minutes after 5:00pm in late December. Winter in these parts can be a gloomy and desolate time. That is why it is so enjoyable to drive down streets that are bathed in Christmas lights. The glow of Christmas lights transforms a dark night into something warm and magical. It is no coincidence that we celebrate Christmas just a few days after the winter solstice—the shortest day of the year in terms of daylight. In fact, the darker the night, the more radiant is the light which shines through the darkness.

The prophet Isaiah wrote that “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Isaiah 9:2). When the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, St. John writes that He is the “True light coming into the world. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it” (John 1:5). In Chapter 8 of John’s Gospel, Jesus tells all who will listen that “I AM the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus. Light. Dispelling Darkness. Making things bright. Brighter than Christmas tree lights. A light so bright it destroys the shadows and darkness of even sin, despair, and death.

What we celebrate on Christmas is that into the darkness, angels appeared over Bethlehem. The Son of God shows humanity, His face from a manger. Into the darkness, God places a star to guide the magi. Into that darkness Jesus walks head on. To hear, to reconcile, to lift up the poor, the marginalized, the destitute, the overlooked, and those who were reviled and loathed. Even the darkness of Good Friday could not extinguish the Light which came into the world on Christmas.

Jesus enters into our own darkness as well—whatever that darkness may be. Despair. Doubt. Unbelieve. Sin in you. Sin around you. A family falling apart. Death stealing you loved one. Into all of this the light of Christ shines through. The Lord offers to us what we long for the most. Peace. Light. Forgiveness. Strength. Consolation. Hope. No shadows. No darkness. Jesus is the light of the world. His birth rescues us from every type of darkness imaginable.

Stewardship TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

Evangelization UNLEASH THE GOSPEL

Christmas, a Eucharistic Feast Day, is upon us! by John Hannigan

The Nativity of the Lord is a great feast for the world, the Church, and each person ever created. As in all feasts, there is eating! Families and friends gather to share fine meals. Holiday fare is presented on banquet tables amid “Ooo’s” and “Aahh’s.” Christmas stories often culminate in meals. Tiny Tim and the Cratchits feasted on the goose given to them by Mr. Scrooge, now “filled with Christmas spirit.” Even the Grinch, also now saved, came down from his mountain and “he himself … carved the roast beast!”

At Christmas – “Christ’s Mass” – we celebrate not only the coming down of Our Lord who presides at the eternal heavenly banquet in which we partake at Mass, we also celebrate the food! Christ Himself.

Throughout salvation history, God provides His people with real food. Adam and Eve in the Garden had their fill from every tree, but one! The Israelites in Egypt ate the Passover Lamb whose blood saved them. God sent manna from heaven to feed His people in the desert and save them. And “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life … that the world might be saved” (John 3:16-17). Yes, Christ the child born to us this day, upon Whom dominion rests, is “Wonder-Counselor” and “Prince of Peace” (Is 9:5). But Jesus is also the Word of God “made flesh” (John 1:1-14). In His incarnation, the Christ child comes to us to be food. That is why He is placed in a manger, a feeding trough for animals, amid the glorious “Ooo’s” and “Aahh’s” of choirs of angels!

Christmas celebrates the coming of the only food that fully satisfies and saves. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus proclaiming “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:29), our Passover meal. “Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger’” and “‘whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day’” (John 6:35;54;58). Jesus gives us the great gift of Christmas at every Eucharist, real food, His Body and Blood: “‘This is my body, which will be given for you … ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood’” (Luke 22:19-20). This is Christ’s culminating meal, “‘For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink’” (John 6:55). Presented such fare on the altar table, we cannot keep from joining our prayers and songs of praise, our “Ooo’s” and “Aahh’s”, our “Glory to God in the Highest,” with those of the angels who attend at the heavenly banquet table. This is what makes for a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

As our Advent preparations draw to a close and Christmas fast approaches, it is fitting that today’s readings demonstrate the intensity of the Father’s perfect and passionate love for each us, culminating in the gift of His own Son, Jesus Christ, on Christmas Day. In response to such an overwhelming gift, what can we do except offer our lives as gift in return, embracing a stewardship way of life with all the love and strength we have to give?

In our Gospel passage from Matthew, we find an unparalleled example of one who embraced this way of life in St. Joseph, as he obeys God’s call to him through the message of an angel. We never hear St. Joseph speak, but the Scriptures tell us he was always listening, attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit for his family. It was Joseph who found the stable where the baby Jesus would be born. No doubt it was Joseph who cleaned it up and prepared it for Mary and Jesus since we know that Mary was about to give birth. Joseph protected the family, guarded them, tended to their safety, their comfort, and their well-being at the expense of his own plans and preferences. Though we do not hear any words from St. Joseph his actions clearly show that he offered himself, his whole life, as a gift to his family through his strong guidance, protection and service.

Let us imitate St. Joseph then as good stewards, giving our very lives to those around us in love and gratitude to God who has given us everything we have, especially His own Son, Jesus Christ.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We the Christian Community of St. Thomas More, in an atmosphere of hospitality, are dedicated to

proclaiming the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through excellence in worship,

and talents of our members.

Christmas Message

The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap, His hair was like a light. (O weary, weary were the world, But here is all aright.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's breast His hair was like a star. (O stern and cunning are the kings, But here the true hearts are.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's Heart, His hair was like a fire. (O weary, weary is the world, But here the world's desire.)

The Christ-child stood on Mary's knee, His hair was like a crown, And all the flowers looked up at Him, And all the stars looked down. GK Chesterton
