WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

• Lead from lead-based paints.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and

other masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated

lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduce yourexposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilatedarea, and work with approved safety equipment, suchas those dust masks that are specially designed to fil-ter out microscopic particles.

Additional Safety Instructions For Sanders

No list of safety guidelines can be com-plete. Every shop environment is different.Always consider safety first, as it appliesto your individual working conditions. Usethis and other machinery with caution andrespect. Failure to do so could result inserious personal injury, damage to equip-ment or poor work results.

1. BE AWARE OF BELT or disc rotation whensanding.

2. KEEP FINGERTIPS AWAY from the mov-ing belt or disc. Serious injury could result ifskin contacts abrasives or moving parts.

3. NEVER USE EXCESSIVE FORCE whensanding. Doing this greatly increases thechances of personal injury and motor over-load.

4. ALWAYS FEED THE WORK against thedirection of rotation.

5. EVEN IF YOU HAVE A reliable method ofdust collection, use a dust mask or respira-tor when sanding, as well as eye and earprotection.

6. IF THERE IS ANY doubt as to the stabilityor integrity of the material to be sanded, don’t sand it.

7. DO NOT OPERATE SANDER with a dam-aged or badly worn disc or belt.

8. WHEN DISC SANDING, feed material intothe portion of the disc spinning down towardthe table.

9. TIE BACK LONG HAIR and remove anyloose-fitting clothing or jewelry that could becaught up in the sander’s disc, belt, or othermoving machine parts.

10. HABITS — GOOD OR BAD — are hard tobreak. Develop good habits and safety willbecome second nature to you.

Operating this equipment has the potentialto propel debris into the air which cancause eye injury. Always wear safety glass-es or goggles when operating equipment.Everyday glasses or reading glasses onlyhave impact resistant lenses, they are notsafety glasses. Be certain the safety glass-es you wear meet the appropriate stan-dards of the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI).

Grounding

This equipment must be grounded. Verifythat any existing electrical outlet and circuityou intend to plug into is actually ground-ed. If it is not, it will be necessary to run aseparate 12 A.W.G. copper grounding wirefrom the outlet to a known ground. Underno circumstances should the grounding pinfrom any three-pronged plug be removed.Serious injury may occur.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance to disperse electric cur-rent. This tool is equipped with a power cord hav-ing an equipment-grounding conductor. SeeFigure 1. The outlet must be properly installedand grounded in accordance with all local codesand ordinances.

The Model G1013 is wired for 110V, single-phaseoperation only. The 1⁄2 H.P. motor will safely draw12 amps at 110V. If you operate this sander onany circuit that is already close to its capacity, itmight blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. However, if an unusual load does not exist and apower failure still occurs, contact a qualified elec-trician or our service department.

Clean Up

BENCH LOADYour Model G1013 Combination Sander repre-sents a relatively large weight load in a small foot-print. Be sure that you workbench is adequatelyreinforced to support the weight of the sander.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine withoutlimitation. Ensure that your working area offersplenty of room for free movement and a substan-tial amount of distance between you and othersthat may be working in your shop area.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or exten-sion cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas.Be sure to observe local electrical codes for prop-er installation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Site Consideration

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect them from corrosion during ship-ment. Remove this protective coating with a sol-vent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser. Avoidchlorine-based solvents as they may damagepainted surfaces should they come in contact.Always follow the usage instructions on the prod-uct you choose for clean up.

Do not use gasoline orother petroleum-basedsolvents to clean with. They have low flashpoints which make themextremely flammable. Arisk of explosion andburning exists if theseproducts are used .Serious personal injurymay occur.

Do not smoke while usingsolvents. A risk of explo-sion or fire exists and mayresult in serious personalinjury.

Many of the solventscommonly used to cleanmachinery can be toxicwhen inhaled or ingest-ed. Always work in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sourceswhen dealing with sol-vents. Use care when dis-posing of waste rags andtowels to be sure they donot create fire or environ-mental hazards.

Make your shop “child safe.”Ensure that your workplaceis inaccessible to children byclosing and locking allentrances when you areaway. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting or operating equip-ment.

4. Move hands away from 8'' disc.

5. Plug sander into power and turn machine onand off quickly. Inspect tracking.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 until the belt is centered onthe rollers.

If the belt tracks properly on the two front rollers, but not on the rear roller, the rear roller must beadjusted. The roller shaft axle is slightly bent. Byturning the axle, belt tracking will be affected.

1. Turn off the sander and disconnect it from itspower source.

2. Remove rear belt guard.

3. Using a 10mm wrench, turn the rear axle nut.See Figure 16.

4. Keep rotating by hand until the sanding beltrides in the center of the roller.

5. Replace the rear belt guard.

The idler and drive rollers are slightly crowned tokeep the belt centered on the rollers. This will notcorrect improper tracking. Tracking must be peri-odically adjusted (particularly after belt replace-ment) to keep the belt properly aligned to therollers and the platen. To adjust tracking:

1. Unplug the machine!

2. Remove the Sanding Belt Table andSanding Belt Guards.

2. Turn the 8'' disc by hand to observe lateralbelt drift. DO NOT turn the sander on toinspect for belt drift.

3. By sight, center the Sanding Belt by adjust-ing the tracking knob. See Figure 15.

For general wood sanding, position and securetable, turn the machine on, and slowly feed yourworkpiece into the belt or disc. For disc sanding, note the direction of the disc rotation and be sureto feed your workpiece into the disc’s downwardspin. Also, be sure to keep the work table about1⁄16" away from the belt or disc.

Remove platen and move Small Upper IdlerRoller rearward so the workpiece will not be acci-dentally forced against it. Slowly feed the work-piece into the belt; the belt will follow the contourof the workpiece. See Figure 20.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

General

Table

Your combination sander is equipped with shield-ed and pre-lubricated ball bearings that requireno lubrication for the life of the bearings. All bear-ings are common sizes and are readily availablefrom a local bearing supply house or our ServiceDepartment. The roller shafts, however, will ben-efit from regular applications of light machine oil.See Figure 23.

The working table and other non-painted sur-faces on the Model G1013 should be protectedagainst rust and pitting. Wiping the sander cleanafter every use ensures that sawdust is notallowed to trap moisture against bare metal sur-faces.

Tables can be kept rust-free with regular applica-tions of products like Boeshield® T-9. For longterm storage you may want to consider productslike Kleen Bore's Rust Guardit™.

Make a habit of inspecting your sander each timeyou use it. Check for the following conditions andrepair or replace when necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Worn or damaged V-belt.

5. Poor belt tensioning ⁄ tracking.
