    MODERN LANGUAGES

Opening night Thurs 5 Sept, 6 8pmWith a free screening of Man Of Aranat 8.30pm.

Filmed in 1934 by Robert Flaherty, this

documentary was one of the inspirations

for the exhibition. Everyone is welcome,

    refreshments will be served.

    Modern Languages presents the work

of 5 artists and designers with varying

relationships with Ireland. Coming from as

far as Japan, Canada and here in Scotland

these artists oer new interpretations of

    traditional Irish craft. Exploring the

    relationship between indigenous Irish craft

    and contemporary international creative

practice, the exhibition focuses on the

artists adoption and corruption of craft

practices, and their adaptation of elements

of the vernacular to convey their own

    personal interests and motives.

    KARTINA ZEMBL A /PICTURE LAND

Artists and makers are invited to respond

to the themes of imagined territories and

    potential futures. , a title

    semi-borrowed from Vladimir Nabokovs

1962 novel Pale Fire and loosely translated as

picture land, will see the convergence of

objects and images from dierent disciplines

that together build up a fantastical vision

    of a misremembered state.

    Brought together via open submission,

the artworks in this exhibition will combine

implausibly to form a catalogue of a

makeshift world, its topography, sites, and

inhabitants a land of green-screen mounds

with CG-ed birds; of badlands staggered with

the up-ended, petrified remains of long-dead

sea mammals; of lumps of metal and clay

raided from the gaping holes of archaeological

digs; of teeth and hair and tar lifted from the

foreshore; of giant nests gone cold; of stories

told by Old Salts speaking in snippets of a

complex and chaotic language, for example.

    oers the opportunity

for artists and makers to see their work in

    an unpredictable yet exhilarating context.

Work considered includes (but is not

    limited to) sculpture, painting, printmaking,
