http://law.columbia.edu/international-programs

The Office of International Programs offers students the opportunity to enrich their understanding of law, language, culture, and governance through over two dozen overseas study programs all over the world These programs are grouped into three categories:

Semester Exchange Programs Dual Degree Programs Global Alliance Programs

GLOBAL PROGRAMS FOR A GLOBAL AGE

CLS offers 16 established semester study abroad opportunities in 12 different countries. Most programs can be either during the 3L or 2L year, although preference is given to 3Ls.

Independent study abroad at other overseas non-partner schools is also possible, but interested students must take on substantial additional requirements for administrative research, preparation and approvals Special Independent Program Addendum is due early - 2/1/19

Choosing a Program: • Do you speak any foreign languages? • When would you like to go abroad? (Fall or Spring? 2L or 3L year?) • Is there a particular field of law you’re interested in? • Is there a region or country you’re interested in? • What are your career plans? • Do you have the ability to delay degree conferral or the Bar? • Would you prefer to study with other CLS students?

Columbia Law School students can earn 2 degrees within the “standard” 3-year study period, with a later graduation date or additional year required for some programs.* Students earn both a J.D. from Columbia and one of the following degrees from our peer institutions: Paris I (Sorbonne), M1/M2, (taught in French, 4 years)

• 2 years at CLS (1L & 2L years); 2 years at Paris 1 (3L year + 1 year) • Note: Students may have the option to shorten their stay to only one year and receive an

LL.M. instead.

• (taught in French and/or English, 3 years) 2 years at CLS (1L & 2L years); 1 year at Sciences Po (3L year)

London: King’s, LSE, SOAS, or UCL, LL.M. • 2 years at CLS (1L & 2L years); 1 year in London (3L year)

*Participants in the London and Frankfurt programs are awarded J.D. degrees and take the Bar in February of the following year. Participants in the Sci Po LLM in Transnational Arbitration & Dispute settlement are awarded J.D. in October and take the Bar in February. Some schools require average grades of B+ or better.

DUAL DEGREE: PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Only students in their 1L year (class of 2021) are eligible to apply for dual degree programs.

Residency/Credit Requirements (83 credits to graduate) Students need to have completed 63 credits before commencing study abroad, e.g.

• 1L = 32-33 credits (depending on 1L Spring elective) • 2L = 30-31 credits (depending on 1L Spring elective) • 3L (in combination with, if applicable, 4th year abroad) = 21 credits

(London LLM programs require additional 3 credits supervised research with Columbia faculty member)

Timing July Bar Exam & May or October Degree Conferral (some Paris programs) February Bar Exam & October Degree Conferral (Sci Po LL.M. in Transnational Arbitration) February Bar Exam & Degree Conferral (ILF and London programs)

Tuition 3 Year Programs: remains the same 4 Year Programs: half tuition is paid in the 3L year and half in the +1

Financial Aid Considerations IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FINANCIAL AID: The clock starts ticking on grace periods for

student loans from standard May graduation date, not from the later date of the February degree conferral.

GLOBAL ALLIANCE: PROGRAM DETAILS

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY ABROAD

Degree Requirements Study abroad programs do not exempt students from any requirements for

the J.D. degree (e.g. Professional responsibility, Major and Minor writing, Pro bono, experiential, Legislation & Regulation (class of 2021) and credit requirements) All students, particularly dual degree students, should meet with a Student Services adviser before going abroad to make sure all requirements can be met in time to graduate.

Credit Requirements Complete 84 credits (JD ‘20) or 83 credits (JD ’21) in the JD program Enroll for 11-13 credits while abroad (permitted one 11-credit term) Receive the equivalent of a “C” or better to receive credit for each class CLS transcripts will only reflect the number of credits earned (foreign law

school will send your their own, separate transcript with grades) Courses abroad count as law credits but are not counted towards Kent/Stone

honors - treated as P/F. In some cases, CLS students may also earn credit for supervised research

with a CLS professor or participation in journals while abroad

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY ABROAD

Tuition & Fees Columbia law students who participate in study abroad programs will

continue to pay Columbia tuition, as well as the Health & Related Services fee and (except as described below) Health Insurance fees. Other campus-based fees, including Student Activity and University Facilities fees, are waived during a student’s period of study abroad. Financial aid is not affected.

Note that non-Columbia students who enroll in the same classes overseas may pay lower tuition directly to the overseas partner school. The difference in tuition charges reflects, among other things, the difference in the value of the credentials awarded in each case.

Students may request a waiver of the otherwise obligatory Columbia Health Insurance fees by presenting proof of adequate alternative coverage for the entire year (even if only abroad for a semester) to the Columbia University Insurance and Immunization Compliance Office. Regardless of whether a waiver is granted, University policy requires that all students continue to be responsible for paying Health & Related Service fees while abroad.

Four-year Dual Degree programs – Half CLS tuition in 3L year and half in the +1 year.

Logistical Arrangements Students responsible for making their own travel, visa, and housing

arrangements. (3Ls may sublet their Columbia housing in fall only, 2Ls permitted either semester. 3L students abroad in the spring must give up Columbia housing) Note: We can connect you to incoming international exchange students interested in subletting at CLS for a semester.

Important: Students are responsible for the cost of living while abroad. These costs include travel to and from the foreign country, residence fees if applicable (e.g., Amsterdam), housing expenses and associated fees if applicable (e.g., Amsterdam), printing costs, food, utilities, entertainment, and all other costs associated with study abroad. For more information visit the Office of International Programs.

The amount of administrative and other assistance offered by our partners differs significantly by school and program.
