Ask a child what her favorite color is and she will tell you without hesitation. It might be a toss-up between two favorite hues, but a child simply

knows! So do most adults. Color choice is probably the most easily accepted of all choices we can make and share. No one groans or judges when someone says he likes “blue.” It is simply one choice among a cadre of beautiful choices. Color evokes emotion and many times unearths memories carefully and lovingly stored.For your pleasure, today we offer a spectrum of color for your ears and eyes as we celebrate our “Colorful World.” Today’s repertoire selec-tion is a joint effort between former Children’s Chorus of Maryland Artistic Director Mairee Pantzer and me. A 2012 spring concert about color was her incredible idea and I couldn’t be more grateful for her guidance musically and artistically!

I’ve long thought America’s music, with its songs based on folklore and tales of the Wild West, quite colorful. It wasn’t until I started search-ing through scores that I realized that the lyrics to these tunes are also filled with color words. Each choir today offers the flavor of America’s past in songs that you might remember from your childhood.

CCM’s Lyric Choir is pleased to present two concert premieres of works this spring. The first is Jonathan Jensen’s delightful setting of Lewis Carroll’s acrostic poem from Through the Looking Glass. In his program notes, Jonathan Jensen writes: “With the music, I have attempted to capture the poem’s sense of the innocence and fleet-ing pleasures of childhood.” The second premiere is Amna Hashmi’s piece “Land of the Silver Birch.” Amna is a graduate of CCM and a se-nior at the Bryn Mawr School. Her piece originated as an assignment for Mairee Pantzer’s Solfa IV class. Amna introduced her piece to me last year and I knew it had to be programmed as the silver element of our concert! Lyric Choir played with a variety of introductions to the piece and finally settled on woodsy sounds over a single tone, a haunting introduction to Amna’s arrangement of this Canadian folk song. Thank you, Jonathan and Amna for your contributions!

Julia Bielefeld’s lighting is designed to subtly reflect the mood of each piece, a performative luxury thanks to her talents and Bryn Mawr’s Centennial Hall capabilities. It is my hope that you allow the beautiful world of color and the remarkable sound of the Children’s Chorus of Maryland choirs to enchant you this spring of 2012.

Look around you today—You will see many people sporting various CCM pins. The oval, “Sponsor” pins are given to honor those people who have made an extraordinary financial contribution to CCM, of five hundred or more dollars to CCM in any one year. CCM could not exist without their generosity.

Patricia McKewen Amato’s extensive operatic experience includes duties as conductor, coach, and accompanist at the AIMS Institute in Graz, Austria, Brevard Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Peabody Institute, and the Young Victorian Theatre. She served as assistant music director of the Baltimore Opera Company and music director of its touring company; music director/conductor for Annapolis Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, Brevard Music Festival, Opera Americana, Washington Savoyards, Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and Rep Stage; and assistant conductor/chorus master for Washington Summer Opera. A versatile pianist, Ms. Amato frequently performs with the Children’s Chorus of Maryland, Annapolis Opera, Annapolis Chorale, Baltimore Choral Arts, Baltimore Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Baltimore Opera, Prince George’s Opera and Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Opera regional competitions. Ms. McKewen Amato is a first place winner in the Houston Chamber Music Society Competition; recently performing The Carnival of the Animals with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and Carmina Burana with the Baltimore Choral Arts. She made her Lincoln Center conducting debut in 1999 in an all-Charles Loeffler program, subsequently recorded on Koch International. Ms. McKewen Amato is a coach/accompanist for the voice division at Towson University, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz Austria, and the Children’s Chorus of Maryland. She holds a BM from the Catholic University of America (magna cum laude), a MM from the University of Houston (magna cum laude), and certificates in lieder, opera, and chamber music from The American Institute of Musical Studies, in Graz, Austria.

Versatile musician Jonathan Jensen grew up listening to his older brother’s 78 rpm records and hearing folk music and jazz. He loves to play a diverse array of music and on various instruments including percussion, mandolin, banjo, and tin whistle—all of which he has played on stage with the BSO. Although his primary instrument in the orchestra is bass, he often doubles on keyboards and has been known to come up with original compositions. He once won a contest at Mill Bridge Village Ragtime Festival for a ragtime piece he composed. When not playing with the Symphony, he plays piano for contra/English country dances, performs with the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra and the Mandolin Quartet. Mr. Jensen studied with Warren Benfield and attended Interlochen Arts Academy and Northwestern University. Before joining the Baltimore Symphony, he held the position of Principal Bass with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Canada, and during the summer, he played bass for the Grant Park Orchestra of Chicago.

Abigail Lo started taking private piano lessons with Mr. Robert Hitz at age four. After five years, she began a new chapter of her piano study last fall in the Peabody Preparatory program. Under the mentorship of Mrs. Elizabeth Azcona-Hartmark, Abigail’s first year has been smooth and fruitful. She was invited to perform in the Vella Silver Honors Recital last winter and she recently won the Junior Division of the Part Recital Competition. Abigail has been a proud chorister in the Children’s Chorus of Maryland for three years. She is now a junior member in the Concert Choir. Abigail also loves dancing. She studies ballet, jazz, modern and tap in The Moving Company Dance Center and she performs with the studio’s dance company.

As a current faculty member and Alumna of The Bryn Mawr School, Julia Bielefeld is delighted to welcome the Children’s Chorus of Maryland to her home theater. She has been designing lighting and stage managing performances since high school. During her undergraduate degree at Marlboro College she worked on many shows including Much Ado about Nothing, Macbeth, and Cash. She was privileged to be able to work with Eric Bass of the Sandglass Theater in Putney, Vermont. Since returning to Bryn Mawr, Julia has designed lights for Stage Door, As You Like It, and Alice in Wonderland. Her favorite part of being a lighting designer is inspiring future generations of designers to play with light, color and space. Julia especially enjoys creative projects where she is able to collaborate with her students on all aspects of a show’s design.

Brendon Brown picked up the electric bass in 2003, a year after graduating high school. His first bass teacher, Tom Pita, turned him onto jazz and classical music. At that point, he changed his major to music and transferred to Towson University to study under Josh Davis and Victor Dvoskin. The final two years at Towson were spent under the instruction of Jeff Reed. Since graduating in 2009, Brendon has gigged regularly in the Baltimore and DC areas. He was bassist for the Baltimore blues rock outfit, The Herd of Main Street, from 2007-2010. Brendon’s current activities include upright and electric bass instruction and recording a sophomore release with roots rock band, Blankus Larry. He is also studying to become a Luthier of violin family instruments.
