From the Editor

From CSCA Secretary Joe Haines: “The Colorado State Chess Association held its Annual Meeting on Sunday, September 1st between rounds four and five of the Colorado Open. Randy Reynolds was elected as President, Brad Lundstrom was elected as Vice-President, Richard “Buck” Bu-chanan was as elected Treasurer, and I was re-elected as Secre-tary. Alexander Freeman was Elected to the Member-At-Large position and Jackson Chen was elected as the Junior Rep. Other business at the meeting was the membership approving two by-law changes and changes to how Colorado Tour points are calcu-lated and managed for the upcoming year. Please check the web-site for these changes.” I want to congratulate all those who were elected for the upcom-ing year, I am sure that they will work cohesively and vigorously to promote and expand chess in Colorado. I also want to congrat-ulate Chief TD Richard “Buck” Buchanan and his assistant Joe Haines for running what must be the smoothest Colorado Open yet! What a great turn-out, I hope every player had a time to re-member.

Speaking of the Colorado Open, “Buck” has chosen a large num-ber of games for your chess pleasure to peruse. The second part of games will be listed in the next issue of the Informant. Many other games scores also await you from the Monument Open, and Pikes Peak Open.

So again, the email addresses of the board members can be found on the left. They are always more than willing to listen to what you may have to say and/or suggest to help improve chess in this great state of Colorado. So send them a note whether the issue is a minor one or not, your opinion counts.

May Caissa be with you.

The President Speaks

It’s an exciting upcoming year for Colorado chess. In the last membership meeting, we passed a couple big changes to the way we conduct our Colorado tour events in hopes of drawing more participants and tournament directors to the tour. These changes I wish to address in my first remarks.

We have first changed the formula for calculating tour points to make it simpler for anyone to determine how many tour points they acquire at a given tournament. This simplified formula will actually be very similar to the way we used to calculate tour points, though, in that those that attend many events and do well at each event will tend to do well at the tour. I believe when players know exactly how many tour points they get per event, it will encourage them to attend more events.

We changed a few of the requirements for tour events, too, to make them more amenable to tournament directors. First, the 25% discount that we require for juniors, seniors, or unrated players has been eliminated, and tournament directors are free to set their own pricing for their tournaments. Even with this change, I would strongly encourage tournament directors to still keep the discounts in place whenever possible. A tournament’s attendance is likely to be impacted by not offering these dis-counts. It extends an olive branch of sorts to key demographics with financial assistance, especially with unrated players. I al-ways cringe when I think of the upfront cost for a new player coming to their first tournament, having to buy USCF and CSCA memberships as well as the entry fee. Helping new play-ers, in particular, feel comfortable at their first rated tournament ought to be paramount for any tournament director.

We also changed the way the tour is funded by taking a third of membership dues and dedicating it to the tour, which eliminates

the need of tournament directors paying $1 per player. This is to allow tournament directors to keep their prize funds high even when they are on the tour. It places the onus of funding the tour on the CSCA general funds. I know there are some who disagree with this approach, saying that it compels all players to contrib-ute to the tour prizes via membership dues, whether or not they seek to compete. In an ideal world, we would all pay for only the things we wanted and nothing else. But when we are part of a community, there are often services that we pay for that we will never use. And such it is with our chess community as well. Having a centrally funded tour promotes CSCA’s primary mis-sion of promoting chess in Colorado, and I encourage everyone to attend as many tour events as possible. For those worried about the financial impact this will have to CSCA, rest assured that we will revisit this very issue a year from now to answer this very question. Our healthy surplus also testifies that we will be able to weather any financial impact this may cause, at least in the short term.

I see bright things ahead for Colorado chess. We saw extremely high attendance at the last Colorado Open, topping 130. We have the beginnings of a team scholastic chess event coming out of the scholastics program. And new tournaments and tourna-ment directors are emerging, giving plenty of opportunities for chess growth in the state. It’s a great time to be playing chess in Colorado.

As always, please feel free to share with me any ideas you have for furthering chess in our state. We all share an active part in making our Colorado chess the top program in the nation, and this is my hope that it shall become such.

Colorado Open Weekend

by Joe Haines

Labor Day weekend was a great week-end for chess in Colorado. The Colorado State Chess Association hosted three great events for chess players.

The weekend kicked off Friday evening with a Simul with IM, and Colorado na-tive, Michael Mulyar. Nine players chal-lenged the IM and one player, Rhett Langseth, succeeded in coming away with a draw and autographed photo with the International Master for his hard work.

The second event of the weekend was the 2013 Colorado Quick State Champion-ship. 29 players participated in the event including International Master Sandor Kustar from South Dakota and Life Mas-ter Brian Wall. This year’s event was a six-round event that ended up with a three way tie for first place between IM Kustar, and Colorado Experts Jesse Cohen and Chris Peterson. IM Kustar won the event on tie-breaks; however, Chris Peterson was declared the Quick State Champion over Jesse Cohen also on tie-breaks.

The main event of the weekend was the 2013 Colorado Open. This year’s event included 131 players in three sections. This year’s field included four past state champions including IM Michael Mulyar who was making his first appearance since 2009. Other past state champions included Randy Canney, Jesse Cohen and Brain Wall. This year’s event also includ-ed two IMs (Mulyar and Kustar) in the field. These two players were undefeated and faced each other in round 4 in what many individuals thought would deter-mine the winner of the tournament. Their long battle resulted in a draw and left the determination of a winner to the last round. In the last round, IM Mulyar faced NM Lior Lapid while IM Kustar face Expert Chris Peterson. Kustar beat Peter-son while Mulyar could only manage a draw against Lapid. This gave Kustar the tournament win. Mulyar won the title of Colorado State Champion on tiebreak over Lapid, Jesse Cohen, and Zach Bekkedahl, who all scored 4-1.

In the U1800 Section Victor Huang won

by going 5 – 0 in a very competitive sec-tion where five players finished tied for 2nd with four points each. Finishing tied for 2nd were Dean Clow, Suhaas Nara-yanan, John Krue, Dennis Bolshakov and Ryan Beckett.

The U1400 Section was won by Rebecca Herman. Rebecca was undefeated. She completed her sweep of the section by beating Joe Aragon in the final round for the win. Finishing in second place was Tom Needham with 4.5 points.

A special thanks goes out to Richard “Buck” Buchanan who was the Chief Tournament Director for both the Quick Championship and the Open Champion-ship.

Monument Open

by Fred Eric Spell, Chief TD

A beautiful setting, a beautiful location and another wonderful turn-out. All the ingredients for a great tournament, and indeed it was!

Forty-eight players arrived on an August weekend to compete in the fifth edition of the Monument Open and there sure were some fireworks! There were no less than twenty upsets ranging from a rating dif-ference of 39 to 760. That 760 rating point upset belonged to Tara Martinez who took home a nice “Cross” pen for the upset prize of the tournament.

The champion of the tournament and as such, not only took home a shared first prize with Chris Peterson but also cap-tured the Monument Open Stein as a tro-phy (awarded on tiebreaks) was Steve Lett, who only recently returned to USCF rated play after taking a 17 year break. Welcome back Steve!

I want to thank everyone who took the time to play and I hoped you had a won-derful time. I also want to thank my As-sistant TD Joe Fromme for helping out, he made my job that much easier and his work was greatly appreciated. Alexander Freeman (1731) LM Brian Wall (2252)

Pikes Peak Open

by Richard “Buck” Buchanan, Chief TD

The Pikes Peak Open chess tournament was held August 10 – 11 in the Manitou Springs City Hall. Brian Wall won first place in the field of 46 players.

OK, another chess tournament, right? Good times by all, a job well done, what’s next? Well, not quite.

On the Friday before the tournament a massive rainstorm hit not only the town of Manitou Springs but also the infamous “burn scar” in the mountains to the north-west, the result of last summer’s Waldo Canyon forest fire. Rain water poured off the hillsides carrying mud and anything else it could pick up down the canyons into Manitou Springs. State Highway 24 to Woodland Park was closed. Fountain Creek was a torrent, and, most seriously, water from Williams Canyon poured down Canon Avenue, following different destructive routes on its way to Fountain Creek.

This was the second such flood we had this summer, and the more ferocious. Houses were trashed on upper Canon Avenue, cars were swamped on Lovers Lane off Canon Avenue, businesses along Manitou Avenue had their lower stories buried in mud.

And the chess tournament? Well, the City Hall is well above the creek’s water line, and there was safe parking along Manitou Avenue. A few prudent folks who had watched the scenes on TV decided not to come. But Dean Brown place a post on Facebook that the show must go on, and so we opened the doors and set things up, and lo and behold, the chess players came.

A common pastime during the tourna-ment was to stand by the open windows above the creek and watch the roaring waters and the great piles of stuff they carried from upstream. Throughout the weekend we were warned that we might be evacuated from the building if more storms came. This put an edge on things, especially in round five when official warnings came that there was danger of another downpour, and if the warning siren sounded, we had to get out immedi-ately. The police blocked Manitou Ave-

nue so that no one else could enter the downtown area, though those already there could get out. I told players early on in the round that in case we were evacuat-ed, the prizes would be based on the four rounds already played. This caused some folks to play faster and maybe end their games before they normally would. I packed up all my stuff early, and we put up some tables and chairs while games were going on, contrary to normal prac-tice.

But as it turned out, the siren never sounded, and after a while the cops let drivers enter the area again. So the tour-nament ended with all rounds played.

And the quality of the chess did not seem to suffer from the excitement. We had a good, strong event with lots of fighting chess, upsets, and glorious games. (Also note the round 2 pairings Brian vs. Brian, Tim vs. Tim, Mark vs. Mark.) Half a point below Brian’s 4.5 came Jackson Chen, Kevin Seidler, Mark Schlagenhauf, and the amazing Tim Brennan, whose sharp tactics helped him earn an Expert’s rating (with a little help from Yours Truly as well). Other who impressed were Karl Irons, Mark Krowczyk, and Ron Rossi. There were great games played; I espe-cially recommend Sage-Brennan, Baffo-Seidler, Krowczyk-Peterson, and Samuel-Irons.

Altogether, a remarkable tournament, but an experience I would just as soon not repeat. LM Brian Wall (2247) Andy Wu (1745)

Tactics Time answers: If you have a position from a game played in Colorado with an interesting tactic please send it to me! It can be anything from a ma-te in one to a deep combination that only you and Magnus Carlsen could have possibly figured out! [email protected] 1. In this position I noticed that if I could play 10...Qb4+ I would fork the White king and bishop, winning a piece. But if I did this

right away, White could block the check with 11.Nd2 which also defends the bishop on c4. So I first played 10...Bxf3 removing this defender, 11.gxf3 only way to recapture 11...Qb4+ forking the White king and bishop, winning a piece.

2. 15...Rd1+!! sets up a deadly double discovered check. 16.Kxd1 Ba4+ 17.Ke1 Qd1# Randy saw this tactic, which allowed him to put his knight safely on e4, which looked like it was an unsafe square, but actually was safe because of this tactic. His oppo-nent did not fall for this little trap.

3. 19.g4 forks the Black queen and bishop. 4. 27.Qxf5, which wasn’t played in the game, wins a valuable pawn, and attacks the vulnerable rook on g6. The e6 pawn is pinned

like a tail on the donkey. 5. 23.Bxf7+ turns Black’s position into a steaming pile of Hungarian goulash. 23...Rxf7 24.Qg8+ Rf8 25.Qxg6+ Rf7 26.Qxe4

and White is up 2 pawns. 6. 20.Rc7 forking the Black queen and bishop. 7. 19.Qxb6+ takes the rook. The knight on d7 is pinned, and cannot recapture. 8. 29...Na3+!! is a buckshot forced mate, 30.bxa3 Rc1+ 31.Kb2 Qc3# or 30.Ka1 Rc1+ 31.Qb1 Rxb1#. 9. In this game I blundered my queen early and fought back to eventually win. Here I started my comeback with 24...Rxd6. If

White recaptures with 25.Nxd6 I have the knight fork 25...Nf2+ forking the White king and queen. Paul Anderson told me that I am the Anthony Weiner of Colorado Chess - I don’t know when to resign!

Forcing a Draw – Problems

by NM Todd Bardwick (Reprinted with permission of the Author,

the United States Chess Federation & Chess Life magazine.)

We looked at a some examples of how to save a lost game by forcing a draw in the July issue of the Colorado Chess In-formant. When you are behind and in trouble, it is important to stay mentally tough and look for any way possible to save yourself.

Now you get your shot at it...can you fig-ure out how to draw these inferior posi-tions?

#1 This position occurred between Garry Kasparov and Neil McDonald in Great Britain in 1986. Black appears to have no useful checks and is behind in material. Black sees a clever stalemate position and plays 54...Rxg3+! 55.Kxg3 Qe5+! Draw White must capture the queen and stalemate Black.

#2 White is ahead a pawn and has slightly better development. Black sees a clever way to force a three-move repeti-tion draw with his annoying knights and advanced g-pawn. He plays, 25...Nf4 26.Bxh8 N2h3+ 27.Kh1 (27.Kf1 g2 ma-te) 27...Nf2+ Draw agreed because of the upcoming three-move repetition. This position occurred in London in 1862 be-tween George MacDonnell and Adolf Anderssen.

#3 Max Euwe was White against Mir Sultan Khan in this position from Has-tings in 1931. White has an extra passed pawn and looks like he is on his way to victory. Black made several key observa-tions: White’s bishop is stuck defending his pawn on d5 which blocks the bishop from helping slow down Black’s kingside pawn majority and the bishop and the promotion square of White’s h-pawn are not on the same color. Black sees a way to eliminate all of White’s other pawns by playing 43...Nxa4! 44.Kxa4 g4 45.fxg4 fxg4 46.Kb4 h5 47.Be8 The bishop must abandon his d-pawn to stop Black’s king-side pawns. 47...Kxd5 48.Bxh5 Ke5 49.Bxg4 Draw agreed. White cannot promote the h-pawn since his bishop is not the same color as the promotion square.

#4 This position occurred in the 1956 USSR Championship between Yuri Aver-bakh and Boris Spassky. White is behind in material, but has a chance to draw be-cause Black only has one pawn left. Re-member that when you are behind in ma-terial, it is usually a good idea to trade off pawns, with the goal of eliminating all your opponent’s pawns – his potential queens. White figures out how to do this by playing 70.Rxb5! axb5 71.e6+ Rxe6 72.Kc5 Re5+ 73.Kb6 Draw agreed. Black’s king cannot help protect his b-

pawn as White threatens Bb4 and Bc5, cutting off the rook from defending the pawn. The ending with the bishop vs. a rook is a draw, if played properly.

#5 Stephen Boyd was playing the White pieces against Torbjorn Glimbrant in this 1992 game played in Alicante, Spain. Black’s exposed king is in danger of getting checkmated by White’s queen and rook. Black finds a solution by sacri-ficing all three (!) of his pieces to force a stalemate. He plays 41...Rxh3+! 42.Kxh3 Qh1+ 43.Kg3 Nh5+! 44.gxh5 Qf3+! 45.Kh2 Qg2+ 46.Kxg2 Stalemate.

#6 This position occurred in Vienna in 1872 between Carl Hamppe and Philipp Meitner. Black sacrificed a lot of pieces to draw White’s king into Black’s posi-tion. He must checkmate him or force a three-move repetition before White’s pieces can come to the rescue. Black plays 16...Bb7+! 17.Kb5 17.Kxb7 loses to 17...Kd7 18.Qg4+ Kd6 and White can-not stop the threat of 19.Rhb8 mate.

17...Ba6+ 18.Kc6 18.Ka4 Bc4 and the threat of 19...b5 mate that cannot be stopped! 18...Bb7+ Draw by 3-move repetition.

USCF Delegate’s Report

By Richard “Buck” Buchanan As usual, I represented Colorado at the USCF Delegates Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin, on August 3-4. Alternate Delegate Dean Brown was unable to go because of family commitments, so the long string of consecutive US Opens that he and Kathy Schneider had created, came to an end. Also as usual, Michael Mulyar was playing on the top boards and doing very well. Shortly after that he earned a GM norm in the Washington International tournament.

My wife Dee and I drove out and made a vacation out of it. On the way east, we camped overnight in Nebraska and Iowa, and dis-covered that northeast Iowa is really a charming place. We even camped at Pikes Peak State Park, with a great view overlooking the Mississippi River. After the meeting, we headed north into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and took a boat to Isle Royale National Park on an island in Lake Superior.

The travel details are to pad this report, because really very little happened at the meeting. None of the usual controversies took place, the disruptive “characters” weren’t there, no lawyers were hovering about, we listened to a few interminable speeches but still were able to finish off the business in only one day.

Four of the six candidates for the Executive Board were chosen: Ruth Haring, Mike Atkins, Randy Bauer, and my old Ohio buddy Chuck Unruh. They received many, many more votes than the runners-up. I am still on the USCF Ethics Committee, though no long-er Chairman. There were the usual routine matters to resolve, and when I tell you the most controversial topic was the minimum age of Delegates and Executive Board members, you will understand it wasn’t that exciting. The most important thing for tournament players is that a new rule book will be coming out soon, I believe by the end of the year.

Still, it was worth it to go there and participate. I saw many old friends and a few folks who are on one side or another of Ethics com-plaints - now that part took a little diplomacy!

Tara ...Queen of the Upsets Galore

by Joe Fromme Assistant TD, Monument Open

When Chris Peterson drew Grandmaster Tejas Bakre in 2012, it was an exciting moment to be sure and I was moved to write about it. The title “The Art of the Possible” says it all. Now, here we go again. Wunderkind Tara Martinez rated 577 defeats a 1337 player at the 2013 Monument Open. I personally watched the best endgame technique ever by an under 600 player in my life. Am I scared to play her? You’re darn tootin’ boy!

Seriously, isn't there a rule against such uppity behavior? How much longer can western civilization stand when little children intel-lectually outmaneuver our seasoned elders? Ahhhh...the humanity!! Anyway, Fred Spell awarded her the upset prize which was a beautiful red “Cross” brand pen. Seeing the joy in her face and the pride in her parent's eyes made my weekend right there. Congrat-ulations Tara!
