An abstract illustrative organization of color hues around a circle, showing relationships between colors
What is a color wheel?
A color wheel can be diferent forms
What are the primary colors?
They are the three pigment colors that cannot be made by mixing any other colors.
MAGENTA, CYAN, and YELLOW are primary colors.
These three colors are mixed to create all other colors
Can I make primarycolors?
Remember, you cannot make primaries; you must buy them
Primary colors
By mixing two primary colors, a secondary color is created:
• Magenta + Yellow = Orange• Yellow + Cyan = Green• Cyan + Magenta = Purple
What are the secondary color?
Orange, green, and purple are secondary colors.
Can I make secondaries color?
Remember, You can make secondaries. You do not have to buy them.
Secondary colors
•red-orange•yellow-orange•yellow-green
•blue-green•blue-purple•red-purple
Tertiary colors are also known as intermediate colors
•We use the names of the two secondary colors to describe them.
•When a hue is yellow and green at the same time, we call it a yellow-green or a green- yellow, depending on whether it is closer to green or yellow.
Tertiary colors
The properties of colour
We use comparison to describe colours: apple green, sky blue, poppy red, etc.
A more correct way to define a color, is to describe its properties.
The three properties of colour are
HUE, VALUE and SATURATION
HUE VALUE
SATURATION
The properties of color
What is the hue?
•HUE is the name for each color: green, blue, red-purple,
etc.
What is the value?
Value describes the darkness or lightness of a colour.
• color + white = tint• color + black = shade
Tints are lightened colors.
Colors mixed with white are called tints
TintsTints
This is an example of a value scale for the tints of blue.
Shades are darkened colors.
Colors mixed with black are called shades.
ShadesShades
This is an example of a value scale for the shades of blue.
Always begin with the color and add just a bit of black at a time to get the desired shade of a color.
What is the saturation?
If white, black or another color is added to a pure color, its
saturation decreases and its intensity drops. .A pure color is at its highest saturation, its most intense and brightest form
Low saturation High saturation
A saturated hue is not mixed with other colors
Saturation or intensity refers to the "purity" of color.
Define the following colors describing its properties.
Remember, the three properties of colour are HUE, VALUE and SATURATION
Magenta.
(High saturation)
Light Magenta.
(Low saturation)
Dark Magenta.
(Low saturation)
Paintings with one hue and its values :
Monocromatic paintings:
It’s about relationships
Complementary colors are opposite on the color wheel and share no common colors.
What are the complementary colors?
Lemon yelow
Red Magenta
Cyan Blue
Complementary colors
When Complementary colors are placed next to each other, appear brighter
Gaugin
The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation.
if you want to be noticed, wear complementary colors!
In order to get this effect, we can use the colour that is next to the complementary one:
What are the analogous colors?
They tend to look pleasant together because they are closely related.
Analogous color
Analogous colors sit next to each other on the color wheel.
This combination of colors provides very little contrast.
They usually create serene and comfortable designs.
What makes analogous colors harmonious is simply that they go well together. They are pleasing to the eye.
Orange, yellow-orange, and yellow are an example of analogous colors.
Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh
Analogous color scheme are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
WARM AND COOL COLORS
The color circle can be divided into warm and cool colors.
• The warmest color is
red-orange • The coolest color is
blue–green
COOL COLORS WARM COLORS
Warm colors are made up of the red hues, such as red, orange, and yellow.
They lend a sense of warmth, comfort, and energy to the color selection.
They also produce a visual result that causes these colors to appear to move toward the viewer, and to stand out from the page.
Cool colors come from the blue hues, such as blue, cyan, and green.
Cool colors give an impression of calm, and create a soothing impression.
They will also appear to recede from the viewer, so they are good to use for page backgrounds.
Houses in Provence, Paul Cezanne
Warm colors are vivid and energetic, and tend to advance in space.
Cool colors appear to recede from the viewer, so they are good to use for page backgrounds.
REMEMBER
Which color is at the background?
Red advances in space
Green recedes in space
Neutral Colors
The neutral colors contain equal parts of each of the three primary colors.
Where equal parts of two complementary colors are mixed together (here, green and red), a neutral brown is created.
Black, white, gray and sometimes brown are considered "neutral”.
