A tradeoff calculation and presentation I did for a client in 2000. Of course the numbers don't mean anything any more, but most of the logic still works. I would add cloud computing to the price now.TRANSCRIPT

• Requirements– Easy / Fast access to ProMOPS– Good internet connectivity– Low costs– Easy administration
• Choices– In house with direct ProMOPS connection– Co-location with batched data transactions

Synopsis
• In House– Fast, secure communication with ProMOPS and
easy access to the server. But, some staff maint. will need to be done and bandwidth brought in house.
• Colocation– External management of power and bandwidth.
But, maint. is not included and can be very costly or slow.
Recommendations
• Host In House
• Purchase additional T-1 line and UPS.– If bandwidth is being consumed, move graphics
to an external shared server. ($1-200 / month)
• Batch communication with ProMOPS initially, phase in some live information.
Costs
• In House– $1500 for UPS
– $1900 per month for dedicated T-1
• Co-location– $250 setup + $150
DNS charge
– $500 + $400 per month for 1.5 MBps service
– $150 / month tape change service
– $140 / hour service
