Wow! We Welcome Phil Mickelson back on ourcover!

Mickelson is again hosting the Coachella Valley’slegendary PGA Tour event, formerly called the DesertClassic and long before that The Bob Hope Classic. WithAmerican Express onboard as its title sponsor, thebeloved tournament, now named The AmericanExpress, will continue its long tradition in our valley.

Mickelson has become the “patriarch” of this event, having previously hosted it under the CareerBuilderChallenge and Desert Classic names. As of 2020, hebecomes the face of The American Express, which willcertainly help draw his Tour friends and colleagues toparticipate.

American Express brings hope of a bigger andstronger Tour event given its significant resources andwillingness to support the tournament in every wayincluding more money and bigger names, which shouldramp up the excitement and bring back the luster theevent has lacked the past few years. That all butguarantees a brighter future for the tournament thanany recent sponsor has been able to deliver. These areindeed exciting times for this “golf capital.”

We welcome the American Express team to thevalley and support Mickelson and American Express intheir efforts to create an exciting new chapter for thistournament that has long been an integral part of our

desert community. We begin our coverage of theupcoming event on pg. 12.

The valley is all abuzz this season with the latest, hottest craze in sports, pickleball. Still in its infancy, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the nation. TheMargaritaville USA Pickleball National Championshipsin November were held for the second year atprestigious Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in Indian Wells,California. Once again the event was an enormoussuccess with more than 2,200 players and thousands ofspectators. Read all about it starting on page 20.

Pete Carlson’s 2020 Golf & Tennis Expo returns Feb.7 and 8 at the College of the Desert driving range. Theexpo has become THE fun even at which to find a newset of clubs, balls, hats, gloves or whatever else you mightneed for your game. In addition to the latest equipmentand gear to put to the test, there are activities and clinics,to say nothing of live jazz to set the perfect mood forbuying what you need. Get the details on pg. 26.

As always, we continue to work to improve ourcoverage of golf and tennis throughout the valley, and inthis issue we also provide a Holiday Happenings featurefor your “not-t-be-missed” festivities and events thisseason. Turn to pg. 40 to find all the valley has to offer.

The staff and I wish all of our supporters, includingyou, the reader, an amazing holiday season and a fantasticNew Year!

The American Express, the Desert Classic tournament’s new name, will be playedJanuary 16-19 on the same La Quinta-based courses as last year—PGA West Stadiumand Tournament courses and La Quinta Country Club. With society currently engagedin fall and winter sports, not to mention upcoming major holidays, the new year and thePGA Tour’s 2020 calendar seem a long way off. But behind the scenes, things are comingtogether.

“Everything is rocking and rolling. The American Express is coming to town and it’sgoing to be the biggest and best one yet,” says Jeff Sanders of Lagardere Sports, thetournament’s executive director. “We’re getting set to deliver some great entertainmentto all our fans. You know how we do it. It’s golf by day, music by night. It’s Golfchella.”

Player commitments tend to come rolling in around the first of December, and theAmerican Express stands ready to benefit from the second year of the PGA Tour’sadjusted majors’ calendar. Top players who might have considered skipping thetournament in the past, when the season’s second major wasn’t just over a month after thefirst, front-loaded their schedules in 2019. The former Desert Classic benefitted greatly, boasting one of its best fields in years.

Sanders believes the event is positioned perfectly during the tour’s West Coast swing. As a result, many players will come to the desert and establish a base for The AmericanExpress and the other Southern California events on the schedule,” he says.

Those players will often come in early to practice, particularly if they haven’t beenplaying a lot of golf over the holidays, then shift their seasons into high-gear. “I know that’swhat Phil says,” notes Sanders, referring to tournament host Phil Mickelson. “He likes to

It’s time to get ready, time for the glitz, glamour, high golf anxietyand rock and roll that make up the desert’s PGA Tour event. In 2020,organizers expect to see all of the above ramped up as a new,high-powered title sponsor steps in to add punch and prestige.

come here early and get ready for the tournament, then put the teein the ground and get it going, get the new year kicked off right.”

While the field has yet to be set, it’s already known that many ofthe off-course fan favorites from last year will return to PGA Westfor 2020, including Michelob Ultra Beers for Birdies on 16 andCasamigos Club 17 on the par-3 17th. The Albertsons/Vons FanPavilion, an all-access, enclosed party area behind the StadiumCourse’s 18th green, is set to expand based on last year’s demand.

The golf festival theme continues in the ticket booth. Sanderssays the tournament will once again offer its one-price ticket ($30per day, $75 for five days), which allows holders into every area andevery event, including the now-famous music concerts thetournament puts on after Friday’s second round and Saturday’sthird round.

“It’s all about having the most inexpensive ticket on the PGATour,” he adds, “which gets you into all the venues—no extracharge beyond the ticket price for that day. It’s all inclusive and that’sby design. We don’t want to lock anyone out due to pricing andwe’re excited about that. The buzz is back in the valley. We want tohave the biggest crowds we’ve ever had. It’ll be a great year forcharities, a great year for fans, so let’s go have some fun.”

Sanders couldn’t yet confirm this year’s musical guests but didsay one of the nights could be, “for sure the biggest night we’ve everhad in the three years we’ve been here.” If all goes well, the acts willbe announced in late November.

For Sanders personally, the difference in prep this year whencontrasted with previous years is the enthusiastic support ofAmerican Express chairman and CEO, Steve Squeri. Sanders saysSqueri has been “very involved and very supportive,” and isplanning to attend the event.

“American Express has come in with a multiyear agreementthat gives us the solid foundation we’ve been looking for. Withthem as our title sponsor, the event is on solid footing for years tocome. We needed them to be successful and they’re lookingforward to putting on a great show. It’s going to be another greatJanuary.”

In 1981, Ray Moore, an eight-time doubles titles champion, partnered with Charlie Pasarell, winner of 23 singles titles and30 doubles titles, to oversee a tournament that would

ultimately become known as the BNP Paribas Open, one of theworld’s most popular sporting events.

For years, they hosted the tournament at various locationsaround the Coachella Valley, including La Quinta Resort & Cluband the Grand Champions Hotel. But they always desired to havetheir own tennis facility, one that would welcome the sport’sbiggest stars.

After almost two decades of discussion, this dream was finallytransformed into reality when the legendary founder andchairman of IMG, Mark McCormack, joined forces with Pasarelland Moore to privately fund Indian Wells Tennis Garden (IWTG).Designed by Rosetti Associates Architects, Indian Wells TennisGarden was constructed in 1999 and opened in March 2000 to thedelight of fans, players and sponsors.

Developed to take advantage of the majestic backdrop of theCoachella Valley and provide fans with access to first-class tennismatches and unparalleled dining options, IWTG wowed thetennis industry when it hosted the Tennis Masters Series IndianWells, which was presented by Newsweek that spring.

The Tennis Gardens not only featured a spectacular 54-acrelandscape but also offered players and patrons a state-of-the artfacility that included the 16,100-seat Stadium 1, the world’s secondlargest outdoor tennis-specific stadium.

Over the next nine years, the well-received and highly attendedfacility hosted some of the game’s most popular and talentedplayers, including Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal andNovak Djokovic, along with Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams,Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova. As the tournament and facilitycontinued to become increasingly popular with each passing year,Oracle cofounder and CEO Larry Ellison, a tennis enthusiast, decided to purchase both from Pasarell and Moore.

Seeking to ensure that the original vision of a facility designedand built to attract the game’s greatest players year after yearremained fully intact, Ellison focused on renovating and addingonto the property after buying it in 2009, the same year that BNPParibas became the tournament’s new title sponsor.

Preparing for the FutureIn preparation for the 2014 BNP Paribas Open, a new,

permanent 8,000-seat stadium, aka Stadium 2, was added to themix. In addition to the new stadium, three permanent restaurants,

including world-famous Nobu, wereopened, each overlooking the on-courtaction. New practice courts, as well as asecond 19,000-square-foot shade

structure adjacent to one that had beeninstalled in 2012, were also constructed.

“Stadium 2 is beloved by fans andplayers alike and has hosted some of the

most memorable matches in tournamenthistory,” says Philippe Dore, marketingdirector, Indian Wells Tennis Garden. “It’sparticularly known for electrifyingnighttime doubles action.”

In 2015, as IWTG celebrated its 15thbirthday, Ellison decided to fund a varietyof renovations and additions in twoseparate phases, the first before the 2016BNP Paribas Open and the second prior tothe 2017 tournament. Upon completion,Stadium 1 featured new seats, remodeledsuites, a VIP Champions Club, a loweredcourt surface to accommodate recessedtelevision cameras and 21 new restaurantsand concession areas, including WolfgangPuck’s renowned Spago.

“Additional improvements were madeoutside of Stadium 1, too,” Dore adds,“most notably the now permanentStadium Plaza and Superwall, whichprovide a relaxing area for fans to grab abeverage and view matches live on screen.”

An Unparalleled Tennis GardenDue to the dramatic setting of Indian

Wells Tennis Garden, the outstanding playof the world’s biggest stars and the overallatmosphere for which Southern Californiais known, the BNP Paribas Open has beenreferred to as Tennis Paradise. Inrecognition of this moniker, thetournament announced the launch of itsFull Bloom campaign ahead of the 2018event, a celebration of IWTG’s pristinebeauty from its palm trees and f lowers toits designated park area where fans canrelax, dine and socialize.

That successful marketing campaign isnow being followed by the Welcome toTennis Garden messaging, which featuresthree primary elements that make theBNP Paribas Open unique. Welcome toDelicious recognizes the facility’srestaurants and food vendors, Welcome toExcitement focuses on the on-court actionand Welcome to Delightful emphasizesthe Coachella Valley’s exquisiteness—all ofthis as IWTG prepares to celebrate its20th birthday.

“Twenty years is a remarkablemilestone,” Dore says. “We’re confidentthat the 2020 BNP Paribas Open will onceagain delight fans from around the world asthey travel to ‘tennis paradise’ for anunparalleled experience in the desert.”_______________________________

$80,000 total cash purse, with top doubles prize winners receiving$5,000 and singles players netting $2,500. Many of the sport’s mostwell-known pros took to the courts to battle it out for gold medalsand singles glory.

The Women’s Singles Senior Open division was the first final ofthe day, which pitted Cammy MacGregor and Moira Roush againsteach other for gold. While surprise finalist Roush put up a worthyfight, it wasn’t enough to withstand the consistent play thatMacGregor channeled on Sunday, as the 2018 champion defendedher title in impressive fashion.

On the Men’s side of the Singles Senior Open division, Paul Olinand Scott Moore contested a hard-fought final, which saw Olin takethe top prize after also having taken the gold in the Men’s Skill/AgeSingles Senior 5.0 division earlier in the week.

In the Men’s Singles Open division, a crowded field of more than32 participants included all three of the medalists from the 2018Nationals, with Tyson McGuffin, Tyler Loong and Ben Johns allvying to reach the singles podium once again. As competitors wereeliminated, it was clear that none were a match for Johns, who tooka decisive straight-set victory that further solidified his place as oneof the most dominant forces in pickleball today.

As the sun began to set, the Women’s Singles Open finaliststook to the championship court for the last final. Two of the biggestnames in the women’s game, Lucy Kovalova and Simone Jardim, engaged in an epic battle that required extra points to be decided.Defending champion Kovalova was outperformed by Jardim who

proved her mastery here, collecting gold medals in Women’sSkill/Age Doubles and Mixed Doubles Open before her title runin singles.

The largest tournament in pickleballhistory, the 2019 event drew 2,500 players of all ages and skill levelsto the world-class facilities and amenities of this spectacular sportsvenue.

Easily one of the most exciting outcomes from the finalweekend of play came on Saturday, November 9, when themother-daughter team of Leigh Waters and Anna Leigh Waterswere crowned champions of the Women’s Doubles Open division. They edged out the duo of Catherine Parenteau and Jessie Irvine ina match that saw plenty of back-and-forth action. Winning the gold

medal at Nationals is a gratifying achievement for any player, but it’sespecially sweet for this family team, which had the crowd behindthem all the way on championship court as they proved that thecombination of youth and experience was the perfect strategy forvictory.

Saturday’s other gold-medal winners included Lisa Naumu andKris Anderson in the Women’s Doubles Senior Open, BrianPoynter and Dave Weinbach in the Men’s Doubles Senior Openand Kyle Yates and Ben Johns in the Men’s Doubles Open.

The sport uses thedimensions and layout of a badmintoncourt and a net and rules similar to tennis. The origin of the game’s name is thought tobe derived from founder Joel Pritchard’sfamily cocker spaniel, Pickles, who loved tochase stray balls and hide them in thebushes.

Pickleball is clearly on the upswing inpopularity and participation. Its explosivegrowth is ref lected not only in the qualityof players participating in the NationalChampionships but also in the crossover ofplayers from other sports, namely tennisand racquetball, and to some degree golf

Valley resident Tom Flores isn’t as involved with the NFL and his old team as he used to be.  Buthe’s as interested in the NFL as he’s ever been, thanks in part to the interesting times in which we live.

A Super Bowl champion as a player and assistant coach, and two-time winner as head coach withthe Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, the 82-year old Flores spends a majority of his weekdaysrelaxing in his Indian Wells Country Club home, rehabilitating a January shoulder surgery that’skept him off the golf course this year. Weekends when the Raiders play at home are spent inOakland, where he hosts the club’s initiative with Oakland-Alameda County youth, including the Boys and Girls Clubs. Flores and former Raiders offensive lineman LincolnKennedy meet with kids at the Oakland Arena prior to home games, speak to them aboutthe issues of the day, have lunch, then walk to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum totake in the game.

“We entertain the kids before the game starts at the Coliseum where the Warriorsused to play—which, incidentally, it’s sad that they’re gone,” says Flores. “The kids are thereas guests of the Raiders, and these are East Bay, Oakland-Alameda kids. It’s important tothem and it’s important to the Raiders organization to build a relationship with them.”

With more distance between himself and the league, Flores has his own big-pictureperspective on the NFL, and he believes it’s in an “excellent” position. That said, he notes, times today are vastly different than they were only 10 to 15 years ago, and not just on thefootball field. Flores cites the curious case of Antonio Brown to point out how modern athletes aretreated and how they conduct themselves.

“So many of the negatives are out there. You read about them in the paper,” he says. “But so manyof the positives you don’t read about, like myself and what I’m doing right now with the Raiders and theBoys and Girls Clubs.”

And he says there are many other charity events that players and teams around the league sponsorthat you also don’t hear about. “Instead, you hear about guys like Antonio Brown. Who wants to readabout him anymore? You know, he poisoned himself. Nobody did anything to him other than try andhelp him. And trying to help him, you enabled him and look what he left you with. It’s sad to see, but ithappens.”

As for the Raiders, Flores believes the sky is the limit. He cites the fact that Oakland fans still flock togames even knowing the team will be heading for Las Vegas at the end of the season. Vegas stadiumseats are selling like hotcakes, and the team’s Southern Nevada location, not to mention the glitzyattractions of modern-day Vegas, should serve to tempt longtime fans to make at least a few trips toVegas to watch their team—and maybe throw the dice or see a show after.

“I think it’s an exciting time for the Raiders,” Flores says. “I personally would rather them stay inOakland because that’s where I started in 1960 and that’s where they belong historically. But there’s alot of folks who still believe the Dodgers should be in Brooklyn. I’ll always feel that way about Oaklandbecause that’s where Jim Otto and I started in 1960 on the first day of camp, and we’re still with theorganization. We have a great affinity for them.”

Yet he calls the move to Las Vegas exciting. “The new stadium there is going to be dynamite. Theyhave a natural crowd there. There’s all those casinos and hotels. It’s perfect for people coming intotown. I’m sure most of the hotels are buying the luxury suites for their guests. It’s a party town, it’s a funtown and they’ll get a Super Bowl because of that stadium and that city. It’s a different world now forthe lil’ ol’ Oakland Raiders.”

The Southern California desert has its great traditions. There’sits staple PGA Tour event, top-fight tennis championship, PalmDesert’s golf car parade and Village Fest. Another of its greattraditions is Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis Golf Expo. Celebrating its16th year, the expo will once again celebrate the desert lifestyle bybring the latest in golf equipment and gear to Palm Desert justwhen it’s needed—at the beginning of the desert’s winter golfseason.

The 2020 event is scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 7 and 8 atits traditional home, the College Golf Center on the campus of theCollege of the Desert, located on Fred Waring Drive between SanPablo and San Anselmo avenues. The center’s driving range will beconverted into a wonderland for golfers with displays, demonstrations, equipment galore and a selection of food anddrink for those who work up a hunger and/or thirst sortingthrough all the gear. If there’s a big name in the equipment industry, chances are it will be represented at the event, and mostmanufacturers will offer special discounts and pricing inconjunction with the expo.

Of course, one of the biggest advantages of conducting the expoat the College Golf Center is having plenty of room for all thevendors any golfer would hope to encounter. Another is thatpatrons don’t just see equipment with their own eyes and hold it intheir hands in a static environment. At the expo, golfers can takeprospective purchases to the driving range or putting green andtest them to validate their personal effectiveness.

Along with equipment displays and offerings of sustenance, there will also be attractions such as golf trick-shot artist Joey O,who will perform shows each day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. “Mr. 59,” akaAl Geiberger, longtime desert resident with 20 wins on the PGATour, will also be on hand to conduct a short-game clinic each day atnoon. Geiberger may be joined by one of his sons, who are alsoshort-game masters. What’s almost guaranteed, however, is thatGeiberger will spin a story or two for clinic attendees. And ofcourse, Pete Carlson’s love of jazz will be ref lected at the event aswell, with George Cebra’s Jazz Quintet also scheduled to perform.

While many of the valley’s traditions require tickets, even if thecost of admission is beyond fair, it doesn’t get any fairer than free, which is what it costs to take in the golf expo. The expo runs from 9a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and parking is available in the COD’sestablished parking areas.

Fred “The Hammer” Williamson was known for his aggressivenature and his “hammer” blow when he was a defensive backfor the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs during those

Hollywood, where he became known as Tommy Gibbs in the filmsBlack Caesar and Hell Up In Harlem; Jesse Crowder in DeathJourney, No Way Back and Blind Rage; and Detective Bob Malonein Black Cobra 1, 2, 3 and 4.

M*A*S*H*, That Man Bolt and Crazy Joe are among a slew ofhis other post-football movie and television appearances.

These days, however, particularly in the Coachella Valley,Williamson is known for being a great friend to the WoundedWarrior Project, the primary beneficiary of his upcoming golftournament.

The Fred “The Hammer” Williamson Celebrity InvitationalGolf Tournament, benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project, isscheduled for January 11-12 at Eagle Falls Golf Course at Indio’sFantasy Springs Resort Casino. The event begins on the evening ofFriday the 11th, with a registration and pairings party at the 12thFloor Cocktail Lounge and Wine Bar at Fantasy Springs. A silentauction will also be conducted.

Those who only know Williamson for his f lamboyant stylemight be surprised to learn he was a member of the U.S. Marine

“A lot of my old buddies, a lot of old washed up football playersand a lot of my old movie pals are coming in, along with a lot ofMarines,” says Williamson, who will travel to Europe after thetournament to take part in two movie shoots. “It’s a feel-good thingfor me and it’s a feel-good thing for them.”

“If something’s good and you believe in it, and you care about it...it’s going to happen.”— Jerry Weintraub

Unless there’s been some serious cave dwelling going on in yourlife for the past few decades, it’s impossible not to have heard ofJerry Weintraub. The film and television mega-producer,promotor, writer and actor passed away in 2015, but his larger-than-life legacy lives on through numerous projects that bear hisname, one of which is the upcoming “Jerry II,” the 2nd AnnualJerry Weintraub Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament, set forDecember 8-9 at The Madison Club in La Quinta, California.

Weintraub’s name is probably most closely associated withsuch films as Nashville, Diner, The Karate Kid (1984) and, ofcourse, the 2001 remake of Ocean’s Eleven, for which he foundedJW Productions. In addition to producing the sequels Ocean’sTwelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), he appeared in allthe “Ocean’s” films.

In 2018, his son, Michael Weintraub, in partnership withphilanthropist Michael Milken, founder of the Prostate CancerFoundation (PCF), spearheaded the effort to coordinate a golftournament in his father’s memory. “The Jerry”  was launchedprimarily to benefit PCF, along with the Discovery Land CompanyFoundation and the Weintraub Center for ReconstructiveBiotechnology at UCLA. What better location to hold the eventthan the posh Madison Club, of which Weintraub was a foundingmember.

What’s truly jaw-dropping is the degree of star-power involvedin the tournament. Celebrities and sports stars confirmed to playinclude George Lopez, Alfonso Ribeiro, Rick Dees, DennisHaysbert, John O’Hurley, Bruce McGill, Patrick Warburton,Chicago bandmembers Jason Scheff and Danny Seraphine,Canadian NHL player Russ Courtnall, actor and athlete VinnieJones, baseball players David Justice and Robin Ventura and manyothers. Don Cheadle, Cheech Marin, Josh Duhamel, Dennis Quaidand Jack Wagner are among guests also invited.

The magnetism of the tournament goes way beyond the seniorWeintraub’s celebrity connections. Sure, he knew and workedwith every power hitter in Hollywood, business and politics, butthe deeper story is the respect his name engenders.

Michael says, “Dad was someone whom everyone loved. Hiscareer spanned decades, to every corner of the entertainmentindustry including television, film, music and the Broadway stage. And if you called him for help, he’d do anything he could.”

Tournament director Chris Conway, PGA member and seniordirector of corporate development and sports initiatives for PCF,adds, “Jerry Weintraub was a man of great charisma and truly afriend to everyone. He and his family developed close relationships

with the talented people he worked with throughout his career.Jerry was extremely benevolent and this benevolence has beencarried on by his son, Michael Weintraub, in projects like this.”

In other words, the Weintraub name is synonymous withintegrity, which is at the core of this second year of the pro-am. Thetournament garners additional attention because of the venue. TheMadison Club offers “comfort stations” on course, an amenitywhich translates into plenty of great food and drink, which is whyit’s earned the moniker, “home of the five-pound round.”

The club is considered by many to be among the mostexclusive golf clubs in the country. Its 18-hole course was designedby Tom Fazio, and membership in the Club is limited to 225members. Famous members and residents include such luminariesas World Golf Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson, Nike chairman PhilKnight and music and entertainment executive Irving Azoff, although the club is known for its extreme privacy.

The Jerry II starts off with a welcome dinner and pairings partyon Sunday, Dec. 8, which will be co-emceed by Michael Weintrauband close family friend, Billy Bush, nephew of former presidentGeorge H.W. Bush and cousin of former president George W. Bush.As a matter of fact, Jerry Weintraub and his family’s friendship withthe Bush family goes back decades to when they were East Coastneighbors. The dinner will include a live auction and liveentertainment from Chicago Transit Authority, led by legendaryChicago drummer, Danny Seraphine.

On Monday, the tournament day begins with morning warm-ups and a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Approximately 100 golfers areexpected, each having stepped up to donate $15,000 for one playerspot and invitation with one guest to the welcome dinner. Each on-course grouping features three amateurs, a pro and a celebrity.

Following golf, there will be an awards party and a shoot-outwhere four players will compete for closest to the hole, with thewinner nabbing a “bucket-list experience” trip to Ireland, courtesyof Garmany Golf & Travel.

From start to finish, the tournament is first class. But thetakeaway here is the focus on charity, and in a big way. Last year’sevent netted $400,000 in proceeds, and Conway expects that the2019 event will bring in close to half a million dollars.

As Michael Weintraub says, “My dad left a legacy to my sistersand me, and we are proud to carry that on. He lived by a code ofhonor and beyond that, he made everyone feel that their presencemattered and made a difference. My dad was all about helpingpeople, and that’s what this signature tournament does.”

Golfinstruction

Theory 2: Aim at lesser trouble and spin the ball to the fairwayThe tricky thing about playing the tee shot on No. 18 of the PGA West Stadium Course is that the tee aims you to the right where a

group of bunkers wait for your golf ball. The fairway angles back to the left. This hole is calling out to players to hit a hard draw, which is rightup my alley. In my setup, I aim at a group of small bunkers in the distance, which sit a little right of the fairway. These bunkers are myintended launch line on my ball’s f light.

At the top of the backswing, you can see that my left wrist is f lat. But near the finish of my follow-through, I have “released” my left wristso it’s no longer f lat and I’ve rotated the clubface to promote a draw spin. I don’t want to over spin the ball across the fairway into the water,so I need to have a good feel for how much to release the angle of the clubface to promote the appropriate amount of spin. Ball spin iscontrolled by how much the wrist releases the clubface. In this case, I released my wrist just enough so the clubface is at a slightly closedangle to promote a slight draw spin on the ball, just enough to have the ball spin into the fairway.

Pick a shot and trust itIt’s critical to have clarity as to which type of shot you want to

execute. I start by going behind the ball on my intended targetline. When I hold my club up, I’m drawing a line in my mind onthe direction I want the ball to be launched into the air. As I holdthe golf club up pointing in the desired launch direction, I rotatethe clubface to match the angle I want the ball to spin in order toland in the fairway. Taking the time to create that visual clarityhelps me commit in my swing to the launch and spin direction Iwant.

32 DesertGolf&tennis • DecemberJanuary2019-2020

There are two theories behind executing challenging tee shots with your driver. 1) Aim toward the trouble andthen spin your ball away from that trouble. 2) Aim toward lesser trouble and then spin your ball toward the fairwaywhile not over spinning it into trouble.

The Tee shot on the 18th hole at PGA West Stadium Course is a great hole on which to test these two theories, with water looming along the entire left side of the fairway and bunkers up the right. This intimidating tee shot willchallenge many of the PGA Tour’s best at the 2020 American Express, January 16-19.

Theory 1: Aim at prominent trouble and spin the ball away from that troubleThis is a technique I enjoy playing and challenging myself with in my own game, a technique I practiced when I was learning from Hall

of Fame golfer Johnny Miller. He would have me go out on the golf course, aim at the trouble and make myself spin the ball away from it. Inthe case of No. 18 at PGA West, I like to aim at the water going up the left side of the fairway and swing as if I’m actually trying to hit the ballinto the edge of that water. As I’m swinging through, however, I intentionally leave the toe of the clubface open through impact, whichpromotes a cut spin on the ball.

Since my swing path is moving in the direction of the water, my ball launches straight as if it’s going to go into the water. But because Ileave the toe open, my ball spins away from the water and lands safely in the middle of the fairway. You can see at the top of my backswingthat I have my left wrist f lat with a slightly open clubface. As I go into the finish of my swing, my left wrist is still f lat, which means I’ve heldoff that clubface from turning over. The holding off of the clubface helps me produce a slight cut spin on the ball.

Whether you’re living it up in downtown Palm Springs, kicking back in Palm Desert or experiencing the goodlife in Rancho Mirage, you’re enjoying a vibrant real

estate market that continues to grow across the Coachella Valley.Sales are up over last year, and prices are pursuing an upward trend.

Condos, townhomes, single-family detached residences,country-club estates and masterful custom compounds are allpopular in the valley today. Overall, the average median price, as ofOctober 2019, is $400,000, an increase of 3.4% over the sameperiod last year. Detached homes represented the most gains, with755 selling on average per month compared to 737 last year.

For the detached-home market, Cathedral City and PalmSprings saw the biggest price gains through the third quarter of2019, with Cathedral City up 7.5% to $338,500 and Palm Springsup 7.1% to $624,450. Palm Springs is the first city in the region tosurpass the “bubble highs” of 2006. Average days on the market forthese homes in Palm Springs remain at about three months, even asprices rise rapidly.

La Quinta and Indian Wells are the only valley cities toexperience reduced prices in detached homes. This October, theaverage price was $450,000 in La Quinta, down 0.5% from 2018,while Indian Wells now averages $1 million, down 4.8% from lastyear.

Results for other Coachella Valley cities are:Indio: $340,000, +4.6%City of Coachella: $267,000. +3.5%Desert Hot Springs: $231,000, +2.7%Palm Desert: $415,000, +0.9%Rancho Mirage: $674,500, +0.5%

Desert Hot Springs joins La Quinta and Indio in the attached-homemarket, with all three experiencing price reductions intownhomes and condos. Desert Hot Springs is down 34.1% fromlast year to $100,000; La Quinta has dropped 7.8% to $360,000;and Indio fell 7.5% to $220,000.

Results for attached homes in other cities are:Cathedral City: $189.960, +13.3%Indian Wells: $420,000, +5.7%Palm Springs: $260,000, +4.0%Palm Desert: $292,500, +3.9%Rancho Mirage: $340,000, +1.5%City of Coachella: No information available for attached homes.

As you can see, with only a few exceptions, the Coachella Valleyreal estate market is looking up, especially when drastic seasonaltrends are factored in. We’re welcoming a broader spectrum ofresidents than ever before, with millennials and Gen-Xers drawn tothe desert away from the high-priced coastal cities of SouthernCalifornia. Seniors still retire here, favoring high-end privatecommunities, and people from San Francisco, the PacificNorthwest and beyond are making the desert their permanent orpart-time home.

The region is also welcoming an array of new-homecommunities. Palm Springs is a hot market now for contemporaryattached, zero-lot-line, courtyard and detached homes. Newneighborhoods, including Vibe and Icon, are a hit. North PalmSprings’ 309-acre guard-gated Miralon community is about tounveil models for several neighborhoods in what’s being hailed asthe city’s first “agrihood.” Once planned as a golf course, Miralon’s

open space will be home to vast olive groves, expected to produce15,000 gallons of olive oil every year when the trees mature.

Models are now open at Lido at Terra Lago in Indio, whereresidents will enjoy lakefront living. Cathedral City’s Districtenclave was so successful that it will soon be joined by District East, and Prado Pointe is a hit with home buyers in the City of Coachella.

Of course, the desert region is renowned for its golf, shopping, dining and cultural attractions, and more are coming soon. PalmDesert’s prestigious El Paseo shopping district is enjoying a fresharray of improvements and restaurants, and Palm Springs willcelebrate the grand opening of the Agua Caliente CulturalMuseum, plaza and spa in 2020.

As we look ahead to a new year, we do so knowing that our realestate market is strong and growing. Not only are more peoplechoosing to make Coachella Valley their home, more are alsomaking it their No. 1 destination for vacations, celebrations, weddings and spur-of-the-moment road trips. The more peoplevisit, the more they want to stay.

Our vibrant market continues to favor sellers, with only 1.3months of inventory available, average days on market dramaticallylower than before and the sale price versus list price remaining firmacross the region. We’re in peak season now, making this an idealtime to list a home for sale in nearly every city in the valley. Andwith great variety across our cities, we’re able to offer a wide range ofbuyers homes that meet their lifestyle and budgetary goals. Forfirst-time and move-up buyers, as well as singles, couples andfamilies purchasing second homes, Coachella Valley is one of thestate’s most desirable places to live, work and play.

Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert changed handsrecently and the new general manager, Mike Jick, is stillgetting used to his current surroundings. But that isn’t

stopping him from conjuring up big plans for the club, and the newowner is on board, providing the necessary backing, funds andencouragement.

“If it’s the vision that we’re talking about, and it looks like we’regoing that way, I like our chances,” Jick says. “It’s a good golf course.Things were done in the past that were corporate and unnecessary. If we can put that money into the course, it’s going to have a bigeffect on member retention.”

Formerly one of the desert crown jewels in the ClubCorpportfolio, Desert Falls CC was purchased by a private owner, KelvinJung, in mid-October. Jick says Jung, who is making his first forayinto golf course and club ownership, bought the property becausehe’d seen how other nearby clubs and courses operate and felt hecould do a better job.

“Desert Falls assisted with the sale, so now you have this guywho owns several day spas buying the golf course and all theequipment and he has committed to making the club and thecourse spectacular. Now,” Jick continues, “I’m the guy that gets tomake all the new rules, adjust job descriptions and try not to upsettoo many people. I’m just going to try to smooth things out a littlebit.”

Desert Falls is just one of many golf courses in the CoachellaValley that have either recently changed hands, are in the process ofchanging hands or are on the block available for purchase. Becausegolf is so important to the valley and property transitions and salesinvolve such large investments, entities tend to play it close to thevest until a deal is actually on paper.

But it’s a fact that other clubs and courses are considering theirfuture in the current golf market. It’s a constant battle betweenownership, property value, revenue generation and recreationalopportunities—opportunities that were a massive part of makingthe desert what it is today. When the invisible hand moves againstany golf course, there’s immediate blowback, be it from formermembers who no longer have a club of their own, property ownerscounting on a golf course nearby to enhance their home value ordaily-fee players seeing another of their limited desert optionsdisappear.

The legendary Bermuda Dunes Country Club has a newowner. South Korea-based SJS Tomorrow, which has purchasedseveral high-end courses in Southern California over the lasthandful of years, bought the club in October with plans to make itmore exclusive and more private. That’s a new philosophy for golf-course buyers who have typically purchased old-line country clubswith the intention of making them more accessible to the public.

The plan is to do just the opposite at Bermuda Dunes. The newowners intend to invest in areas that should make the club more ofa sanctuary for existing members and more of a draw to youngerand new potential members seeking a private-club option.

Monterrey Country Club and Palm Valley Country Club havealso just sold and are now owned by National Golf Properties, which purchased the courses from American Golf Corporation.AGC will continue to manage the clubs through its private clubarm, American Golf Country Clubs.

Meanwhile, Indian Springs in Indio hasn’t changed owners;Canadian entrepreneur Ken Hanna is still running the show afterpurchasing the club in 2015. But it has officially changed its nameto become more synonymous with the wildly successful Big RockPub on the golf course property. Now, perhaps appropriately, it’scalled the Big Rock Golf Course at Indian Springs, capturing therock-and-roll essence of the pub together with the well-establishedcourse name regulars and out-of-towners recognize. The entireshebang is now referred to as Big Rock Golf & Pub at Indian Springs.

Back at Desert Falls, Jick and Jung are currently absorbed inplans to renovate the clubhouse, including the repaving of the frontdrive. Maintenance equipment, new automatic doors, electricalimprovements and lighting updates are all on the drawing board.Jick says he and Jung basically move throughout the club on a dailybasis, with Jung pointing out what needs to happen next.

“He’s doing all the right stuff and he’s going to make the placelook a lot better,” Jick says. “It’s a very positive thing, It’s a new thingfor him and a little overwhelming at times. But right now, themembers are hopeful for change and improvement and it’s a workin progress.”

Ford’s Shelby Mustang GT is as iconic a sports car as evermade. The 2020 Shelby GT500 bolsters the image of theAmerican supercar by adding muscle and styling to rival

anything on the market. The hand-built 5.2 liter V8 is stunning. From the note of the

exhaust to the ragingly aggressive horsepower, the Mustang isn’t amild-mannered show horse this year. With a nearly laughable 760horsepower, the Shelby GT 500 is the most powerful Mustangever made. It shoots out of the gate with a 0-60 mph time of 3.3seconds. Yes, less than 4 seconds. That’s McLaren fast and every bitthe brawn of a Dodge Challenger.

The body lines on the new Shelby GT 500 won’t disappointaficionados of American muscle cars. A cobra on the grill andracing stripes harken to the early years. A spoiler adds much-needed down draft and a sporty look that makes clear this Mustangis raring to go. Large 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels and a carbon-fiber hood scoop round out a look that’s going to be “posterized” onthe wall of every red-blooded American boy’s room.

The front end is muscular. Huge air intakes juxtapose twoheadlamp slits that look cobra-like. Edges knife behind the doorswhile the roof curves in an aerodynamic move that screams speed.A view from the rear says everything: “Eat my dust.”

Ford put enormous disc brakes on the front end of the GT toslow the ponies under the hood, and the handling of the GT 500 issecond to none. While its front-end weight makes gettingimmediate rear-wheel traction impossible, keeping the horsesresponsive isn’t a problem. Coming in and out of turns with thistight chassis is a dream; the soft brake pedal and responsive steeringwheel let you know exactly what’s coming and provide confidencein the corners.

With the optional track package, Ford boots the back seat tosave weight, making it slightly less practical. But honestly, the backseat of the Mustang hasn’t been useful for passengers since the1960s.

The 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission comes withseveral modes for making the most of the 625 lb-ft of torque theGT500 delivers. Drag Strip mode makes use of all the bells andwhistles, from the dampers to the optimal engine rpm. Add to thatan adjustable launch-control mode and you, the driver, are justalong for the ride. Who needs skill when you have technology?

Inside the brain of the Shelby, timing is everything. Shift pointshappen after the computer simultaneously reads dozens of vehicleand environmental factors, including engine and transmissionrpm, driver input and g forces. All these factors correlate to theoptimum shift for every driving situation based on the selectedmode. Steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are direct-wired tothe transmission to cut milliseconds off the time between askingfor a shift and getting a response. In a word, driving the Shelby GT500 is fun.

“Every aspect of the Shelby GT500 driving experience changeswith the mode, be that the throttle responsiveness and snap of theshifts you feel in the seat of your pants, or the ‘pop and burble’ ofthe exhaust in performance modes,” says Pat Morgan, FordPerformance powertrain manager. “It’s a full multisensory visceralexperience.”

And it’s roomy inside, especially compared to others in thesupercar category. While the cockpit is snug, the design is sensibleand nothing feels awkward. The magnetorheological damperskeep the body under tight control and yet still take the shock outof hard impacts.

Fully loaded, the Shelby GT 500 will set you back about$93,000.

There’s a lot to be said for a thriving family business. Maison Picchiotti is a sparkling example of the years ofpassion, dedication and talent invested by generations of a lineage, not only to ensure success but also tocultivate customers’ trust and loyalty.

Picchiotti was founded in 1967 by Giuseppe Picchiotti. Today, the family still operates the business, witheach and every piece handcrafted in Valenza, Italy. Picchiotti designers create adornments for today that aredestined to become heirlooms for generations yet to come. These pieces are architectural, featuring calibratedstones in well-proportioned shapes that support a minimalist aesthetic. The artistry lies in the tendency to notover-embellish yet to add just a dash of f lair.

Seven members of the Picchiotti family oversee the company, channeling the culture and history of Italiantradition into the collections, often leaning toward acquisitions of colored stones such as rubies, sapphires andemeralds, particularly unheated, natural gems. And, of course, diamonds are a mainstay of the designs.Baguettes are cut one-by-one in a process called buff-top, lending a luminescent effect to each stone.

Umberto Picchiotti has said, “What I have learned in my life is to be respectful to others. Respect for othersis a value that passes from generation to generation in our family.”

Clearly, every Picchiotti design reinforces that reverence toward the company’s clients.
