COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

October 18, 2015 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Honoring Our Saints

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Gathering Outside in the Memorial Garden

Leader: Before you, O God, we remember today the ones who

went before us, not held back by the awesomeness of the

task They followed you with tenacity and joy.

People: Like a cloud of many witnesses

They stand around us.

Leader: Full of courage and trust they went to new places, ready

to stand and suffer with you.

People: Like a cloud of many witnesses

They stand around us.

Leader: Before you, O God, we remember those who have joined

the church triumphant. We are humbled by the witness

of their faith. We thank you for the members and friends

of the church that dwell now with you…. Dorothy

Strewski, Dorothy Lawniki, Jean Waitz, Joyce Varnum, Frank

Griffin

Leader: We hold the memory of loved ones in our hearts that

have gone from our midst.

People: Like a cloud of many witnesses

They stand around us.

Leader: Blessed are those who die in the Lord,

They rest from their labors, And their works follow them.

People: Like a cloud of many witnesses

They stand around us.

Leader: We name the names of those in our families and

community who we commend in the sure and certain

hope of the resurrection…

Names of family and friends who have died can be spoken now:

Leader: Before you, O God, we remember the saints of our day.

Who do not live by the rigid letter of the law

But by the wild demands of faith.

People: Like a cloud of witnesses

They stand around us.

Leader: These saints are among us- always ready to give more

Always ready to be turned inside out,

Knowing that new ways can only be found,

Through risk and pain.

People: Like a cloud of witnesses

They stand among us.

Leader: Eternal God, We thank you for the witnesses of all times

and places. May the stories of their lives show us the

richness of your grace. May they inspire us to look deep

within our souls. May they encourage us to take the risk

of faith and to serve you in new ways.

ALL: Thanks be to God, Amen.

*Hymn - “In the Garden”

Anthem - “Canon of Peace” from Pachabel’s Canon Chancel Choir

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 55:1-3, 6-13 (pages 671-672)

Psalm 102:18-28 (responsively)

Leader: Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord: People: that he looked down from his holy height, from heaven the Lord looked at the earth, Leader: to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die; People: so that the name of the Lord may be declared in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem, Leader: when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.

People: He has broken my strength in mid-course;

he has shortened my days.

Leader: ‘O my God,’ I say, ‘do not take me away

at the mid-point of my life,

you whose years endure

throughout all generations.’

People: Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

Leader: They will perish, but you endure;

they will all wear out like a garment.

You change them like clothing, and they pass away;

People: but you are the same, and your years have no end.

Leader: The children of your servants shall live secure;

their offspring shall be established in your presence.

*Hymn - “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art” - GTG #624 tune - Toulon

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Profession of Faith - CPC Vision Statement Leader: Let us become a church… People: In which all people know simply and surely God’s great love revealed in Jesus Christ; In which worship is joyful, participatory, visionary and a source of constant renewal for all; In which all seek to understand further the meaning and cost of discipleship.

Leader: Let us become a church… People: Seeking justice, loving mercy and walking humbly with our Lord; Which witnesses to the community and to the world by sharing our relationship with our Lord and Savior; Which spends time in prayer listening for God’s will for our individual lives and for our church; Nurturing our children to be disciples of Jesus Christ, obeying His word and showing his love. Leader: And finally, People: Let us become a people of God called to be a family- open, caring family of faith-where all are embraced, accepted and affirmed.

The Offering “There is a natural law of abundance which pervades

the entire universe, but it will not flow through a doorway of belief in lack and limitation.”
