MUSIC AT LUTHER

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For more than 130 years Luther

students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Music is much more than a gift, though. It’s an integral part of the community of faith and the community of learning on campus. The arts are fundamental to the liberal arts experience at Luther; they help define what it means to be human. Here creative scholarship, personal growth, worship, and social relations merge to create an understanding of the wholeness of life.

The vibrancy of Luther’s music program is rooted in a balance between the academic rigor of our acclaimed music major and the numerous opportunities for study and performance by students from all disciplines across campus.

The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of seven choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands, and nearly 1,000 student musicians. Our students perform in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 350 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Luther College

Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College offers its 2,500 students more than 60 majors and pre-professional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. A Phi Beta Kappa chapter, one of only 280 nationwide, attests the academic excellence of the college and its students. Luther’s liberal arts curriculum is enriched by internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities.

Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community and Lutheran heritage of the college imbue its members with an ethos of service to the broader world. Located in the picturesque town of Decorah, Iowa, Luther is celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition and is enriched by its strong intercollegiate athletics program.

PART II: THE FATHER, THE SON (ABSALOM), AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

Pater NosterJacob Handl (1550–1591)Hinrichsen Edition 1522Our Father, who art in heaven:Hallowed be thy name: Thy kingdom come.Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

David’s LamentationJoshua ShankSanta Barbara Music Publishing 416II Samuel 18: 33When David heard that Absalom was slain,He went up to his chamber over the gate, and wept and thus

he said:Oh my son Absalom, my son, my son, Absalom!Would God I had died for thee, Oh Absalom, my son, my

son.

Take Not Thy Holy Spirit from MeRalph E. Williams (b. 1916)Neil A. Kjos 5095Psalm 51Have mercy upon me, O Lord, according to Thy loving

kindess: according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies; Lord, blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, O cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions: my sin is ever before me.

Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned and, Lord, have done this evil in the Thy sight that Thou may be justified when Thou speakest, and be clear when Thou judgest.

Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy holy spirit from me.

O Lord, Thou open my lips; my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

PART I: SONGS OF FAITH

Psalm I08 David von Kampen (b. 1986)ManuscriptPsalm 108: 1–2, 5 (ESV)Awake, O harp and lyre!I will awake the dawn!I will sing and make melody with all my being. My heart is steadfast, O God!Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!Let your glory be over all the earth!

Selig sind die Toten (from Three Motets)Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672)G. Schirmer 10114Blessed are the faithful, who in the Lord departed, from

henceforth.Yea, the Lord saith: They rest now from all their labors, and

all their works do follow after them.

Let Your Eye Be to the Lord (No. 3 of William Penn Reflections)

Daniel Moe (1926–2012)Augsburg 11-0544Let your eye be to the Lord, and wait upon him; walk with

him, and he will walk and dwell with you.

He’ll Make a WayByron J. Smith (b. 1960)Onyx BJS0001I know the Lord will make a way. Oh yes!If you trust and never doubt, He will bring you out!Amazing grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a soul like me.His mercy’s everlasting, His truth endures. And He sent His son to set me free! He’s there, and He cares for me.He cares, and He’ll set you free.Trust and never doubt, He will bring you out!

PART IV: TO REFLECT

Lo, How a Rose E’er BloomingAllen Koepke ’60 (1939–2012)Santa Barbara 1033Isaiah ’twas foretold it,The Rose I have in mind. With Mary we behold it,The Virgin Mother kind.To show God’s love aright,She bore to us a Savior,When half spent was the night.

O Flower, whose fragrance tenderWith sweetness fills the air,Dispel with glorious spendourThe darkness everywhere;True man, yet very God,From Sin and death now save us,And share our every load.

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming,From tender stem hath sprung.Of Jesse’s lineage coming,As those of old have sung;It came, a flow’ret bright,Amid the cold of winter,When half spent was the night.

Sistah MaryRollo Dilworth (b. 1970)Hal Leonard 08749928Sistah Mary had but one childWho was born in Bethlehem. And every time that little Baby cried,She would rock Him in a weary land.Talkin’ ’bout Sistah Mary.

Three wise men to Jerusalem came. They traveled very far. They said, “Where is He born King of the Jews,For we have seen His star.”An angel came to Joseph, and gave him this command:“Arise ye, take your wife and your child,And flee to Egypt land.”

Even Such Is TimeBob Chilcott (b. 1955)Oxford BC 11Text by Sir Walter Ralegh (?1554–1618)Even such is time,Which takes in trustOur youth, our joys, and all we have,And pays us but with age and dustWho, in the dark and silent grave,When we have wandered all our ways,Shuts up the story of our days,And from which earth and grave and dustThe Lord shall raise me up I trust.

INTERMISSION

PART III: FROM NIGHT TO LIGHT

Water NightEric Whitacre (b. 1970)Walton Music HL08500040Text by Octavio PazNight with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night,Night with eyes of water in the field asleepIs in your eyes, a horse that trembles is in Your eyes of secret water.

Eyes of shadow-water,Eyes of well-water,Eyes of dream-water.

Silence and solitude,Two little animals moon-led,Drink in your eyes,Drink in those waters.

If you open your eyes, night opens doors of musk,The secret kingdom of the water opensFlowing from the center of the night.

And if you close your eyes,A river, a silent and beautiful current, fills you from within,Flows forward, darkens you:

Night brings its wetness to beaches in your soul.

Sure on This Shining Night (from Nocturnes)Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943)Peer Music 0124115Text by James AgeeSure on this shining nightOf starmade shadows round,Kindness must watch for meThis side the ground.

The late year lies down the north. All is healed, all is health.High summer holds the earth.Hearts all whole.

Sure on this shining nightI weep for wonderWand’ring far aloneOf shadows on the stars.

The CreationWilly Richter (1918–1964)Harold Flammer A 5001In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was waste and void. And darkness upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light.
