At the AGM on 20th March, the following parents were elected to the Council Executive:

Treasurer – Rachel Norrie I thank them for the extra commitment they are prepared

to make to the College in taking on the responsibilities

involved in these important roles.

College Values – Student Pledge

At the start of the school year I asked the student

leadership team to work together on developing a student pledge to reinforce our four core College values. This pledge

is to be read out at each whole school and sub-school assembly.

“As students of Mordialloc College, we are

determined to achieve our personal best, not only academically, but in sports, the arts and in

the wider community. We will constantly strive to be the best we can be. We will endeavour to

take responsibility for our actions, owning up to

mistakes and helping others out when in need. We will be respectful towards all teachers and

students, and we will be true to ourselves by being honest and trustworthy.”

Future Facility Development

On Thursday 20th March we hosted another visit from Tim Richardson, the Labor candidate for Mordialloc, and Shadow

Minister for Education James Merlino, MP. The purpose of

this visit was to announce a $4.5 million commitment for the implementation of stage one of our masterplan which

includes the development of a two court multi-purpose stadium and a Performing Arts Centre. Thanks to Angus Mac

Pherson and Indi Jennings from Year 8 for being prepared

to pose for the photo which appeared in last week's issue of the Mordialloc Chelsea News.

Transition

An important part of our publicity in the lead up to our Open Afternoon and

Open Night is the visits we make to

all feeder primary

schools. Over the last three weeks

of this term Jennifer Roep,

George Tzimourtas and I have visited fourteen primary

schools. This is more schools than in

previous years due to an increase in interest in our fantastic school which is

testament to our dedicated teaching team and the excellent results we are now

achieving. On each visit we have taken a

group of current Year 7 students and two Year 12 students to speak about their experiences as

students of Mordialloc College. They have represented the College with distinction and the pride they feel in

their school was obvious in their respective speeches, complemented by a virtual tour of the school. I would

like to thank the following students for their

involvement. From Year 7: Camille Nightingale, Samson Melatua, Eleni Hatzis, Max Peters, Jarrod McHenry and

Zoe Unwin. From Year 12: Matt Smith, Isabella Barker, Blake Hamling, Siobhan Green, Jodie Cullen, Georgia

Presentations at local Primary Schools

Youth Forum

On Friday 28th March, the College hosted the inaugural National Youth Week Leaders Forum which was run by the

Hon. Mark Dreyfus QC, Federal Member for Isaacs. There were over 50 students participating in the forum from

public, Catholic and independent schools. It was a

wonderful opportunity to showcase our school and our School Captains, Isabella Barker and Matt Smith and Middle

School Captains, Scott Kingsbury and Imogen Kane, who

were representing the College, found the event to be

stimulating and most worthwhile. The forum consisted of a Q&A panel on the topic “What are the most important

issues facing Australia in the next decade?” There were four

main topics discussed: asylum seekers, environment, mental health and international development. The panel

included four inspiring young leaders – Fiona Canny – Head of Campaigns at the Oaktree Foundation, an organisation of

young people leading a movement to end poverty; Laura

John – 2014 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations, law graduate and the 2013 Young Citizen of the

Year for the City of Kingston; Dean Levitan – Campaign Director at Jewish Aid Australia and Zac Slattery – Victorian

Young Member for National Youth Week 2014.

Uniform – Black Rain Jacket with logo

In response to feedback from students and parents

we are introducing a new uniform item - a black rain

jacket (waterproof) with

school logo for outside wear only (to and from

school, in the yard at break times). It will not be

allowed to be worn in class. This will be the only

jacket allowed to be worn

to and from school and out in the yard. It is for rain protection ONLY, it is not for

warmth. Students will still need to purchase a jumper and polar fleece or blazer for warmth in winter. The

cost of the black rain jacket with logo will be $37.99

and it will be available in the uniform shop from early Term 2.

Update on Staffing

Kevin Osborne and Melinda Smith are both on long service leave during Term 2. George Tzimourtas has

been appointed to the Acting Assistant Principal position for Term 2 and Shauna Mc Millin will be

replacing George in the Year 7 program, teaching

Maths/Science and being home group teacher for 7C. Shauna has worked at the College in the past in both

the Year 7 and 8 learning centres. Rhonda Ferguson, an experienced VCE Food Technology teacher, will be

replacing Mrs Smith for the term.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday break and we can look forward to another engaging and exciting term starting on Tuesday 22nd April.

Cathedral Cathedral Cathedral Ranges Hike Ranges Hike Ranges Hike Year 10 AdvanceYear 10 AdvanceYear 10 Advance

Early in March the Year 10 Advance class took a long drive to the Cathedral Ranges to complete a 12 km hike up, and down, the mountain. It was the first hike the class had completed together, and it was very challenging. It required leadership skills, bravery, resilience and personal best.

A large amount of climbing was up very steep peaks. Everyone in the class found it extremely challenging, but no one gave up. This was thanks to lots of support from everyone within the class. We successfully completed the hike with no major issues! Everyone was worn out, and very tired. We all slept extremely well that night. It was a great experience and a great challenge that we will never forget.

Thanks to Ms Karamanis and Ms Lazzaro for coming on the camp and special thanks to Mr Evans for organising our challenging and rewarding hike. It was great!

a panel made up of four young Australian leaders. Four themes were explored: International development, asylum seekers, the environment and mental health. We could identify issues and broaden our minds through listening to the excellent panel. It was interesting to hear others’ views about issues in Australia and throughout the world and how we can approach these. We can start now by doing small things that can impact the future. It can be something as simple as starting a conversation about something we are passionate about.

The four of us were keen to discuss our views afterwards, and we are very much looking forward to using the inspiration we received from the forum in our roles this year. Overall, it was a fantastic morning.

Last Friday, Matt and I, and Middle School Captains Imogen and Scott, had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Leadership Forum held by the Honourable Mark Dreyfus MP. It was run for young leaders in the lead up to National Youth Week (April 4-13). This year the theme is “Our Voice, Our Impact.” The experience was extra special for us as Mordialloc was the host school. The forum took place in ‘The Space’ in the Hub, and the audience was made up of students from 12 different schools.

On Tuesday 25th of March, the Year 11

Biology class went on an excursion to GTAC (the Gene Technology Access Centre), with the

aim to understand different cell types and how microscopes can be used. After arriving we

had a brief lesson, during which we tried to

identify a disease from the individual’s symptoms. After a quick snack we started

experiments with our mentors from Melbourne University.

We stained different cells including bacteria

and animal cells using a variety of stains. The favourite of most people was the fluorescent

stains. During lunch we explored the

Melbourne University campus, and then returned to GTAC to complete our

experiments. There we saw our final fluorescent cell images and

observed paramecium

consuming yeast.

Overall, it was a great day and

everyone had lots of fun and

learnt a lot.

On Wednesday 26th March members of our school vocal group went to Glen Eira College to participate in the 2014 Singfest.

We sang in a big hall with about 200 students from many other high schools. We went to some workshops and worked on 3 particular songs,

which we practised and perfected all day.

In the end we sang so well we got to record the songs which will now go on a CD!

The teacher we had was very nice. She taught us some different things

about singing.

Overall it was a very fun day and a great experience!

Thank you Mr.D for taking us and letting our vocal group participate.

From the 19th to the 21st of March, the Mordialloc Year 9

Advance class went on their first camp for the year to Lorne. We were lucky enough to have a couple of surf lessons and

everyone had a red hot crack.

On the first day we were allowed to explore the beautiful camp

grounds and then we all attempted to cook our first meals. I

think we all appreciate the cooking and cleaning our parents do now. Our first surf practice was at Lorne beach, where the

waves were gnarly as. After working hard for 2 hours, we went

home for some well-deserved tucker. That night we all headed off on a night walk, and got to hear some of Mr Evans beaut

stories. When we got back, everyone went to bed straight away, and we didn’t have too much trouble with snoring.

Thursday morning we worked in teams of 11 for an initiative

course at Anglesea, followed by lunch when we tried the delicious, famous “Anglesea gravy” and chips. We all had a blast

on the second day surfing at Anglesea beach. In the evening we visited the Lighthouse where “Round the Twist” was filmed

which was an amazing end to an amazing day.

For the second night we all walked down to Lorne park to play

some games and chill out for a while. Friday morning we had to

go down and do some “run-swim-runs” and Mr Evans taught us

about the different waves and how to deal with rips and currents. Overall it was loads of fun and a great experience. We

all would like to thank Ms Karamanis, Ms Lazzaro and, of course, Mr Evans for planning and attending the amazing camp.

The French

film festival excursion for Year 8 students this year was thoroughly enjoyable, if not a little sad at the

end. The movie recounts the story of a small boy, who grew up thinking that his mother is away travelling the world, but she had in

fact already passed away.

We were able to purchase food from the Jam Factory Mess Hall, in

Chapel Street, once the movie had concluded. We were able to spend about an hour for lunch before catching the train back to school.

The whole day was fun for both students and teachers. We were able

to show our sense of responsibility and independence, by being reliable to casually look at things and eat lunch in our time in that space.

Bonjour tout le monde!

On the weekend of 21st to 23rd of March, I attended the VCE French Immersion Camp at Portsea. It was a prestigious opportunity offered by the Alliance Française de Melbourne in collaboration with the Department of Education. Attending a government school, I was privileged to be awarded the $300 funding from the Department of Education to cover the cost for the camp.

My main intention in attending the camp was to improve my French skills. The camp, held in beautiful Portsea, was orientated around increasing our knowledge and awareness in certain areas as well as developing skills for exam preparation. What I found is that not only did the camp accomplish all these goals, but it went beyond them. The camp provided excellent French food and wonderful accommodation, including the beautiful scenery by the beach. Other aspects of the camp allowed for friendships to be formed between students from other schools; the environment was quite fun with a challenging, but safe atmosphere. In fact, the teachers were wonderful and very supportive throughout the whole camp. They provided fun activities and spoke only in French all the time.

Those who wish to continue their French studies to VCE, I would definitely recommend this camp to you. It will give you valuable skills and knowledge as well as boost your confidence with the French language – je vous assure!

NEWSNEWSNEWS Our College is planning a French School Trip to

France during the January 2016 school

holidays. We are currently sourcing the best

costs with several travel companies. At this

stage, the approximate cost of the 16-day trip

will be approximately $5000 per student. This is roughly

estimated on at least 15 students and 2 teachers going on

the trip. We will let you know as soon as we have a more

accurate quote.

The 16-day trip will cover a week in Montpellier with 15

hours of lessons at the language school; visits to the cities

of Nimes and Avignon, 3 days in tours to visit the Loire

Valley and Chateaux and 4 days in central Paris to visit all

the famous icons. The week in Montpellier will include a

home-stay experience for students staying in pairs with an

allocated family.

Please note that students in Years 9-12 by

January 2016 will be eligible to attend.

A letter will be sent out to French students soon with more

information regarding this event. If you are interested in

your son/daughter participating in this school event, please

On Monday 24th March, Anthony and Bridget Cameron and

I played at the Lawn Bowls finals at Hampton Bowls Club. We played against McKinnon, Dromana and Rosebud. We

were in doubt that we would win against McKinnon, but felt we would win the other games. Bridget was our lead, I

was our second and Anthony (Ant-man) was our skip. By

10am, the games were starting and our first opponent was, in fact, McKinnon. We congratulated them on their

win from the first round. We had won the first two ends with 2 bowls respectively, and then McKinnon won at 10

shots in 5 ends. The final score for that game was 12-6 and we had our first loss.

We were winning right from the start against Dromana.

We had won the toss and had won our first 4 ends with 2

shots every end. The final score for that game was 11- 5 and we had our first win for the day.

Our last game for the day was against Rosebud. The final score for that game was 11- 5 and that was our second

win for the day.

After our three games, we were congratulated by the

manager of Hampton Bowling Club on a great day and we

were presented with second place medals. McKinnon were
