1. Call to Order
Lourdes Perez called the meeting to order.
2. Presentation –
Lourdes Perez introduced Kim McGinnis, new Dean of Student Services at the Medical
Campus. Dean McGinnis comes from Williamsburg Technical College in Kingstree, South
Carolina where she served as President.
3. Approval of the December 13, 2011 CASSC Minutes
The minutes of the December 13, 2011 CASSC Meeting were approved as submitted.
4. Comments by the College Provost or Vice Provost, Education
Legislative Matters –
Legislative Advocacy Committees –
The MDC Legislative Advocacy Committees will be attending the legislative session in
Tallahassee, Florida on January 25, 2012. Legislative sessions will run from January
10, 2012 through March 9, 2012.
Board of Governors –
Since Community Colleges offer baccalaureate degrees, there has been extensive
discussion in bringing the community college system under Florida’s Board of
Governors.
Residency –
U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and aliens lawfully present in the United
States who are in an eligible Visa category may be classified as a Florida resident for
tuition purposes if the applicant or the dependent applicant's parent/legal guardian has
established legal residence in the State for at least 12 consecutive months immediately
prior to the first day of classes of the term for which Florida residency is sought.
Florida School System –
State Mandate - Testing
Students who have not achieved the appropriate FCAT scores in the 10th
grade will
have to take the PERT exam in the 11th
grade. Students who show developmental
deficiency must register for the related high school success course modeled after
MDC’s developmental sequence in reading, writing and mathematics in the 12th
grade.
At the end of the 12th
grade, they will be tested again with the PERT. It will be the
responsibility of the high school to provide instructional resources. The goal is to
increase the number of students who are college-ready by initiating remediation in the
12th
grade.
One Community One Goal -
The School of Aviation in conjunction with the School of Business is working on
developing a new program on Logistics, Transportation and Trade. This program will be
tied to the “One Community One Goal” initiative sponsored by the Greater Miami
Chamber of Commerce and the Beacon Council.

Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) –
The 29th edition of the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) will be from Friday, March 2,
2012 to Sunday, March 11, 2012. The film line-up will be announced at a press conference on
Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
Dean of School of Business –
Dr. Montoya announced that Mr. Brian Sepe is the new Executive Dean of the School of Business.
His main responsibilities are: enhancing and promoting the School of Business, increasing visibility,
developing partnerships and fund raising. Ms. Thania Rios will serve as the Associate Dean and will
continue managing the internal operations of the school. This is the fourth discipline that is
governed by a specialized dean.
Golden Key International Honour Society –
MDC has joined the Golden Key International Honour Society. It recognizes academic achievement
among college and university students seeking baccalaureate degrees in all disciplines. It is the
world’s largest collegiate honor society.
Online Observation Form –
The online observation form developed by UFMDC and Virtual College officials is ready to be
piloted. Department chairs will receive specialized training on how to utilize this new tool during
the spring semester, and faculty members will test it in the summer.
Business Affairs –
Electronic W-2 –
Effective tax year 2011, Miami Dade College employees will be able to activate a newly
developed electronic W-2 form. Beginning on January 12, 2012, you will automatically be
prompted to activate your electronic W-2 upon signing on to your computer. The 2011 W-2
forms will be available electronically by January 31, 2012.
Executive Committee –
On November 8, 2011, the Executive Committee recommended to Dr. Padrón a change in the
admissions procedure. MDC will no longer accept students from high schools that have been
previously questioned as being diploma mills by MDC or other accredited higher education
institution. For more information on MDC’s admission guidelines, visit:
https://www.mdc.edu/procedures/Chapter4/4000.pdf
Hall of Fame –
The Hall of Fame Gala will be held on Thursday, May 10th,
2012 at the Hilton Miami Downtown

5. School of Engineering & Technology
Program Modifications –
Tom Meyer introduced Diane King who presented proposed modifications for the Computer
Engineering Technology program which has been updated to align most closely with the BS in
Electronics Engineering Technology, so that students enrolled in the program have the required
foundation for smooth transition into the baccalaureate degree. The second program modification is
in the Computer Programming and Analysis-Business Application program to add CIS1949 Co-Op
Work Experience in the course and elective block. She also presented revised course descriptions
and pre-requisite modifications.

Lourdes Perez introduced Ruth Ann Balla who updated the council on last day of attendance change
for virtual courses required by the U.S. Department of Education. The Department of Education has
stated that the last day of attendance is where a student was active in the course – participates in the
discussions, submits assignments, and sends emails to faculty about the course. All faculty who are
certified to teach online courses and students taking online courses received an email about the
change in December 2011. Change is effective spring 2011-2. She also provided an update on
ANGEL, the Learning Management System (LMS) used by MDC until October 2014. A series of
town hall meetings are scheduled to discuss the purchasing of a new LMS. Below is the schedule of
town hall meetings:
