College Principal’s Report WELCOME BACK FOR TERM 3

It has proven to be very busy for both staff and students alike with a myriad of activities taking place. The Semester 1 reports were distributed at the end of term 2 and many students achieved fantastic results with numerous certificates being awarded. If you have any concerns with respect to the reports, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator.

Included in this bumper newsletter is a parent calendar so you can plan ahead and not miss any important dates.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION - ”SEUSSICAL”

“Seussical” is reported to be an exceptional musical event! As I write this report I am looking forward to attending the show on closing night and am sure that the show will be another fine example of our talented staff and students.

Congratulations to the production team of: Gina Palamara (Producer), Stacey Camilleri, Justin Gillivour, Shaylee Ashby, Wendy Nagel, Erin Murphy, Brett Gaskett and the rest of the unsung heroes behind the scenes, for their dedication.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS – THURSDAY 3 AUGUST

Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 3 August at the Senior Campus. Appointments can be made via the Parent Portal. Contact either General Office if you are experiencing difficulties making appointments.

Parents are reminded that classes are not run on 3 August however students are expected to attend the interviews with their parents. Here are some tips on making the most of the interviews.

What can you expect?

A two-way conversation. Just as you want to learn about your child’s progress at school, we want to hear from you about how you think your child is doing. When teachers know about children’s talents, interests, needs and dreams, they are better able to help their learning.

Emphasis on learning. The focus of the conference is your child’s learning. We want to discuss how well your child is doing and what we can do to support even better learning. Come prepared with any questions you would like to ask the teacher.

Opportunities and challenges. Teachers will always try to give you positive feedback about your child and areas for improvement. You will know your child’s strengths and areas of difficulty. Together, you and the teacher can explore ways to help your child with challenges.

What will be talked about?

Progress. How is your child coping? Is your child performing at the expected age and grade level? What are your child’s strengths? Where are the areas for improvement?

Your thoughts. Let the teacher know how you feel about your child’s progress and abilities. Tell the teacher about anything you think needs extra attention.

Learning at home. Ask what you can do at home to help your child learn.

Follow-up

Talk with your child about the conference. Share with your child what you have learned. Show how you will be helping with learning at home. Pass on praise. Ask for your child’s views on how learning can be improved.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Parents focused on their children’s education also make a huge difference in a student’s achievement.

PARENT OPINION SURVEY

The 2017 Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted during Term 3 from 7 August to 27 August.

The survey is an important part of every school's parent engagement strategies and assists with future planning and improvement. Parents from our community are randomly selected to participate in the annual survey, which is confidential and anonymous. The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only take 15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August. The survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi.

Results will be sent back to our school at the end of September.

For more information, see:

GET THOSE SUBJECT SELECTION FORMS IN!

I would like to re-enforce the importance of students entering their 2018 subject selections via a webform by the due dates. All students have been provided with a unique code. The link to the webform is on Sentral. Students need to print their selections from the confirmation screen and get a parent/guardian signature before submitting to their Homegroup / Pastoral teacher. Assistance can be provided by contacting the general office.

This term sees the commencement of the very important preparations for 2018. We want to involve parents as much as possible so I have included some important dates.

It is very important that students submit their Subject Selection forms for 2018. All students from year’s 8 to 11 should have submitted their forms by Friday 4 August. Enquiries for those who need some assistance should be directed to the Careers Team at either Campus.

Parents of year 12’s are about to go through the process of choosing a course for 2018. From my own experience as a parent it was a little daunting the first time. We are running a VTAC Information Night on Monday 7 August to help parents to support their children in the next very important stage of their pathway.

Friday 28 July Completed 2018 year 12 VCE / VCAL subject selection forms due (current year 11 students)

Thursday 3 August Parent Teacher Interviews

Friday 4 August Completed 2018 year 9, 10 & 11 subject selection forms due (current year 8, 9 & 10 students)

Monday 7 August VTAC Information Night, Senior Campus

SCHOOL OF ROCK

From his vocal performance at NWR School of Rock during last week of Term2, George Vavlitis of 9BR was awarded a voucher for free music lessons from the Prestige Performing Arts Academy (PPAA) in Epping. The PPAA had a representative attend the festival and was very impressed with George’s performance. (No surprises there!)

Ms Wendy Nagel (Music Teacher/Performing Arts Coordinator) and College Principal, Trish Horner, made a surprise presentation to George of his scholarship, which he will now use to continue with his vocal lessons outside of school.

Congratulations George!

YEAR 7-8 DEBATING

In Term 4, students in years 7 and 8 will have the chance to participate in an inter-school debating program called the Junior Secondary Program (JSP). This program teaches students debating skills and concepts in a fun and friendly environment, through a combination of training sessions and debates. It is designed for students of all skill levels, from those who have never debated before to those who are already confident public speakers.

JSP sessions will be run at Parade College’s Bundoora Campus (1436 Plenty Road, Bundoora) across four Wednesday evenings in Term 4: 11th October, 25th October, 8th November and 15th November. The sessions will run from approximately 6.30pm – 8pm, although these times are yet to be confirmed. There will also be a few lunchtime sessions at school where students will be able to prepare their speeches for upcoming debates.

There is no cost associated with this program, but students are required to organise their own transport to and from the venue.

Interested students should come and see Ms Ames in the Year 7 Hub Office in H Block to collect a permission form.

Jennifer Ames, Middle Years Campus Debating Co-ordinator

MATHS PATHWAY INFORMATION NIGHT Wednesday 16th August 6-7pm

Students in Year 7, 9 and 8C and 8J are invited along with their parents/guardians to attend a Maths Pathway Information evening. This evening will be held on Wednesday 16th August from 6-7pm in the Middle Years Library. This is an ideal opportunity to learn more about the Maths Pathway program with your child and become more familiar with your child’s growth along the Mathematics learning continuum and the goals your child is setting each learning cycle. Students are encouraged to bring along their device to show parents/guardians what they have been doing in Maths this term. It will also provide an opportunity for parents to log on to the Parent Portal in Maths Pathway and see what your child has mastered, along with their current growth. Parents/guardians can also register an email address, so that they are alerted every time their child completes a test and see the result. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Peta Johnstone or Melissa Stephens on 9407-9700. We look forward to seeing you there! Melissa Stephens College Maths Coordinator & Peta Johnstone Numeracy Coach

Senior Campus Principal’s Report Colin Burke Senior Campus Principal

PARKING ON CIVIC DRIVE

Please be aware that we are currently working with the City of Whittlesea to redesign the parking and drop off points near the Senior Campus on Civic Drive.

A number of students contacted me concerned that signs had changed and restrictions would increase. After contacting council these signs were removed and consultation was organised.

We will know more soon about the final plan for proposed changes, however the aims will be to:

Increase drop off and pick up points near the bus stop on the school side of the road.

Shift more all day parking to the council side of Civic Drive so that less students have to cross the road.

Increase four hour parking on the school side of Civic Drive (in front of Arcare) so that more parents can pick up students there.

Once we have a draft map and more information about the proposed changes I will distribute them via the newsletter.

YEAR 12 ENGLISH ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Once again this year I had the privilege of assessing year 12 English oral presentations. All students studying year 12 English presented a persuasive speech on a recent issue. Each presentation was double marked by teaching staff, many of whom gave up their own time to attend the presentations. Feedback from teachers across all of the presentations was very positive.

CITY OF WHITTLESEA MENINGOCOCCAL IMMUNISATION PROGRAM

All Senior Campus students are being offered the Meningococcal immunisation.

This is being organised through the Health Department at the Whittlesea Council, vaccination will take place on -

17th August for Year 10 students 22nd August for Year 11 students 24th August for Year 12 students at the Senior Campus on these dates.

The cards have been distributed and parents / carers are asked to fill these out and return to the College signed even if the student is not being immunised.

Spare cards are available from the General Office, if these can be returned ASAP it would be appreciated.

If you have any queries, please contact Cathy Cranfield on 9407 9700.
