He stressed that raising small dollar contributions is key. As an example, he described the project where apparel students created dresses and shorts for boys and girls at an orphanage in Haiti. Alumni who have never contributed money in the last 5 years were informed of the Haiti project and have been asked to help pay for various materials. Modest goal were exceeded.

• During Inauguration week for the new president, President Kaler went on a campus crawl. Eight hours over two days. President Kaler stopped by each college. He went to Rapson (for CDes). Mai submitted a grant request for $1000 to Student Unions and Activities to receive money for our board from the Coca-Cola grants. College News, Events and Updates: Students are asked to stay updated on CDes affiliated Student organizations for their major so that we don’t plan events on the same day or duplicate events. to partnerships with corporate communities-- wide strides for future and faster benefits.

o UMN was given an A+ ranking for being a sustainable campus. Next steps are to work on becoming a net zero campus.

• Four areas Tom sees the college focusing on in the future: 1. Public Interest Design— Working with the second phase of disaster responses 2. Geo-Design— Using geographical information as a basis for making design choices. 3. Experience Design—Virtual Reality Lab use could be integrated with Carlson School of

Management and College of Design students to aide and assist in research regarding human response to different stimuli.

4. Service Design—Most design disciplines are about designing tangible things, but we are moving into the design of systems, procedures, protocols, organizations, government, K-12/education, etc.

• The Dean’s Reception for admitted students & parents is on February 25 in McNeal or Rapson depending on major.

o The Dean’s Reception will include major sessions, facility and residence tours, etc.

o The purpose is making sure, prospective students know what the major they have been accepted to is actually about. Hearing from alumni and current students is crucial and very helpful for prospective students.

o The students coming for these events are still deciding on schools, so this event should help them determine if the U is the right place for them.

• Welcome phone calls to prospective students using online tool to call from home –February

o This helps boost the number of students in certain disciplines and/or number of honor students attending CDes in the upcoming year

o Application numbers are down for Fall 2012 and lately students are gravitating towards “conventional majors” (i.e.: business, science, etc)

• Lori Swenson will contact you if you’ve signed up for any volunteering, but contact either Lori Swenson or Lori Mollberg with any questions you might have.

• Details / how to prepare for your role / Q&A / sign up (list as of Tuesday AM attached) • *corrected date* Commencement – May 12, 3 PM, Mariucci Arena

College of Design Student & Alumni Board Meeting Minutes: January 31, 2012

5:40 Open Seats - planning, Lori Timing: Nominations for new board members will run January – April 2012. We will vote on new members in April to begin terms next fall 2012. There are several seats that have come open on the board. Board information and applications online at: http://www.design.umn.edu/alumni_friends/join/ (bottom of page)

o Attached to the agenda. o Anyone with a 2012 at the end of his or her name is scheduled to be ending. o A summary of open seats will be put together. o Looking specifically for sophomores and juniors since student terms are 2 years

long. o Also looking for alumni candidates who are wanting to help promote our

mission of enhancing the transition from college to career o Recommend DSAB to those you know who would be a good fit because it’s

more effective if the message comes from a friend as opposed to University personnel.

o By April, the executive board will be meeting for conference call to review nominees.

College to Career updates • D7 Speakers confirmed to date, sample illustration for trading cards passed around

o Design in 7 will be April 4th which is a Wednesday night. o Refer to the handout you received— it lists speakers we currently have and

then those we are still looking for. Handout also has information on spring DSAB events.

o Student graphic designer has been hired for illustrating the “trading cards” this year. They feature an illustration of each presenter.

• Graphic Design program sponsored by DSAB: Best Pitch, February 29, 7 PM, McNeal Hall o See promo attached to agenda. o Graphic designers invited to talk about advice on pitching their ideas. (Four

confirmed presenters.) o Interesting and beneficial for students, although targeted at graphic and

interactive students. o Firms represented are: Tilka Design, Clockwork, Yamamoto, and LaBreche.

• College to Career request from Charlie – HOUS panel - request for panelist recommendations

o In the early stages of assembling a panel. o Hope to have a wide variety of careers within Housing and have a diverse mix of

recent grads as presenters. o Potential date is March 20th because the first selected date interferes with an

Architecture event.
