The Postgraduate Research Student Colloquium for 2010 will be held on the 3rd and 4th November at the Crowne Plaza Parramatta. This is an excellent opportunity for all candidates to present their work to date and to request feedback from staff and their peers.

Presentation at the Colloquium is mandatory for Higher Degree Research Candidates. All candidates who have completed their Confirmation of Candidature are required to present at the Colloquium as part of their candidature. If for some reason you are not able to attend please contact Prof. Bobby Banerjee, Associate Dean (Research) as soon as possible.

All candidates presenting will be required to provide an abstract of their presentation by the 31st August 2010 to Judy Foster.

All candidates and staff are encouraged to attend and provide constructive feedback.

3 Minute Thesis CompetitionThe inaugural College 3 Minute Thesis Competition took place on Tuesday 15th June and was attended by many academics and students. It turned out to be a lively event. The College of Business winners were Laura Luo, Ryan Gould and Zahid Hasan. The winners were awarded $500 to spend on research expenses. Congratulations!!

Innovation and Industry Studies Group

New Study on Trades and Technical Staff in Australian R&D.Dr Phillip Toner and Dr Richard Woolley have recently completed a research project commissioned by DEEWR, The Role and Contribution of Tradespeople and Technicians in the Australian R&D Workforce. The project has attracted much international attention and in June, Phil was invited to present the findings of this bench-mark study to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, in Paris in June. He also presented the findings at a seminar in the Business School at King’s College, London. In follow-up to this work the OECD has agreed to be an international partner with CInIS for the development and submission to the ARC for a Linkage grant in 2011.

CInIS to Convene an International Workshop on ‘Inter Asian Connections’The Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) at the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) have appointed Professor Tim Turpin and Professor V.V. Krishna (Visiting Professor at CInIS) to convene an international workshop in Singapore in December on the role of the social and humanities researchers in regional innovation. The Workshop Regional Knowledge Hubs in Asia: the Social Sciences and Humanities in Science and TechnologyHuman Capital, will bring together scholars from seven countries in the region.

CInIS Engaged with new ASEAN Skills Mobility Project Professor Tim Turpin, together with Associate Professor Robyn Iredale from the ANU and Professor Charles Stahl from University of Newcastle have been successful in winning a new contract from the ASEAN Secretariat to undertake a study of the progress across ASEAN member countries toward the ‘free-flow’ of skills for trade in services. This work builds on earlier studies carried out through CInIS on the status of skills recognition arrangements across the region. The study will focus mainly on mobility under GATS Mode4 and the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA).

CInIS Project Report on VET and Australian InnovationDr Rob Dalitz presented a general overview to a national conference in Perth in July of findings to date of a new CInIS study, funded by the national Council for Vocational Education Research, into the relationship between VET and Australian innovation. The study VET and the Diffusion and Implementation of Innovation is focused on innovation and training three industry sectors: Mining, solar energy, and the games industry.

Research in Health Organisation and Management

RHOaM is a newly created subgroup within CInIS. This is a group of 17 affiliated researchers across UWS aim to build a strong national and international reputation through collaboration across colleges and across universities. This group directly supports 7 PhD candidates who all study in the area of Health Organisation and Management.

Some of their recent grant funding activities include a successful tender of providers of health services evaluation, with the Department of Health and Aging. This cross-college team of researchers are now the preferred team for any upcoming health service evaluation and include team members from medicine, nursing, public health, health informatics, health economics and business.
