Ingram School of Engineering ADDITIONS: EE 5398 Topics in Electrical Engineering. (3-0) This course will cover advanced topics in electrical engineering that cannot fit into a regular course in the curriculum. Registration requires instructor's approval. Justification: The Special Topics in Electrical Engineering course enables the introduction of temporary courses whose content is gaining relevance for current students, but so far, such content has not been developed as a single topic or subject. It also allows the program to determine the appropriateness and applicability of the subject before committing that course to a permanent course number. EE 5398A Antenna Theory, Design, and Applications. (3-0) This course covers the basic theory, design and applications of antennas. The topics include antenna radiation, fundamental parameters of antennas, linear wire antennas, loop antennas, antenna arrays, long-periodic antennas, horn antennas, microstrip antennas and modern nano-antennas. Restricted to students enrolled in MS Engineering program or enrolled in MS Physics, MS Math, MS Computer Science, or MS Technology Management programs with instructor consent. Justification: With the recent great advances in electronics and information technology, it is very important to advance antenna technology at the same time. Traditional antennas can no longer meet our communication demands. However, in our graduate program, we do not have a course to respond to this demand. This course will teach students basic antenna theory, design tools, and applications, which will establish a solid foundation for the students to understand and design a new generation of antennas. EE 5398B Electronic Materials and Beyond for Sustainable Energy. (3-0) This course covers the basic science and technology for sustainable energy from the view of materials, where electronic materials are highly emphasized. The topics include solar cells, thermoelectrics, batteries, supercapacitors, artificial photosynthesis, fuel cells, biomass and nuclear energy. Restricted to students enrolled in MS Engineering program or enrolled in MS Physics, MS Math, MS Computer Science, or MS Technology Management programs with instructor consent. Justification: Sustainable/clean/green energy has attracted vast attention from academy and industry. It also represents one of the most critical issues globally today. The job opportunities in this area are expected to increase continually in the coming decade. However, in our graduate program, we do not have a course to respond to this demand. This course will give students an understanding of future energy technologies. EE 5398C Multimedia Signal Processing. (3-0) This course covers theory and applications of digital signal processing to multimedia signals, including speech, audio, image, and video. Key concepts and algorithms are discussed first, followed by a review of relevant industry standards. Hardware architectures and real-time implementation concepts appropriate for multimedia signals are also included. Restricted to students enrolled in MS Engineering program or enrolled in MS Physics, MS Math, MS Computer

Science, or MS Technology Management programs with instructor consent. Justification: The course prepares students in multimedia signal processing, an area that is key to continuing technological advancements in consumer and industry applications. It provides necessary background in constituent multimedia technologies including speech, audio, image, and video, thereby offering students an opportunity to select one of these areas for their Master’s thesis or project. IE 5398 Topics in Industrial Engineering. (3-0) This course will cover advanced topics in industrial engineering that cannot be fitted into a regular course in the curriculum. Registration requires instructor's approval. Justification: The Special Topics in Industrial Engineering course enables the introduction of temporary courses whose content is gaining relevance for current students, but so far, such content has not been developed as a single topic or subject. It also allows the program to determine the appropriateness and applicability of the subject before committing that course to a permanent course number. IE 5398A Healthcare Systems Engineering. (3-0) This course provides an introduction into healthcare delivery with particular attention to the application of systems engineering techniques. Topics include the organization of healthcare systems, characteristics of US healthcare, decision-making in the healthcare environment, health informatics, and performance measurement tools. Student project involves integration and application of systems engineering methodologies. Restricted to students enrolled in MS Engineering program or enrolled in MS Physics, MS Math, MS Computer Science, or MS Technology Management programs with instructor consent. Justification: The current graduate Industrial Engineering curriculum lacks a complete course in healthcare systems engineering. This course prepares students to state, formulate, analyze, and interpret issues related to healthcare systems. IE 5398B Response Surface Methodologies. (3-0) This course continues the examination of the design and analysis of controlled experiments, demonstrating how design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodologies (RSM) are used in product optimization and process improvement. Topics include factorial and fractional factorial designs, steepest ascent, fitting response surfaces, variance-optimal design, and mixture experiments. Restricted to students enrolled in MS Engineering program or enrolled in MS Physics, MS Math, MS Computer Science, or MS Technology Management programs with instructor consent. Justification: The current graduate Industrial Engineering curriculum lacks of a complete course in response surface methodologies. This course prepares students to optimize products and improve processes using designed experiments. MFGE 5398 Topics in Manufacturing Engineering. (3-1) This course will cover advanced topics in manufacturing engineering that cannot be fitted into a regular course in the curriculum. Justification: The Special Topics in Manufacturing Engineering course enables the introduction of temporary courses whose content is gaining relevance for current students, but so far, such content has not been developed as a single topic or
