History of the White Coat

The Professionalism Ceremony is a rite of passage for students in the College of Allied Health Professions to begin their professional program or clinical encounters with patients. The ceremony focuses on professionalism, encompassing the concepts of ethical behavior, compassionate care, and service to others. During this ceremony, we give students their first white coat and they recite an oath to remind them of the high standards expected of them.

The reception of the white coat is an acknowledgement by the student of a unique privilege and responsibility to enter the lives of patients in a special and honored way. The white coat conveys an unspoken message that the wearer is dedicated to the highest principles of respect, competency, service, and integrity. The White Coat Ceremony, first introduced in 1993, has since become a tradition at medical schools throughout the US. Several other professional groups also utilize the ceremony as a way to convey the principles of professionalism to students beginning their health care education.

Pledge of a Healthcare Professional

From this day forward, I vow to always conduct myself in a manner consistent with the expectations of the profession I have chosen.

I will treat my patients, coworkers, teachers and fellow students with respect. I pledge to uphold the highest standards of professional and personal integrity and, through my words and actions, encourage others to do the same. I will hold sacred the professional confidences shared with me, and maintain sensitivity to ethnic or culturally based beliefs. I will enter into professional discussions with an open mind and a collegial spirit. I promise to honor the patients I will serve, and my profession, by striving for the highest level of competence in my discipline for as long as I practice. I will be a contributing member of the community of health professions scholars, and enrich the classroom and clinic with my reasoned ideas and opinions. I will contribute to the professional advancement of others by sharing innovative methods of practice and mentoring those who would gain from my knowledge and experiences.

I will abide by the laws and the code of ethics of my profession, and by the Honor Code of the College of Allied Health Professions. I will consistently behave in a way that brings honor upon my College, my University and my discipline. From this day forward, I am a professional, and may my thoughts, words and deeds forever proclaim this fact to the society I pledge to serve.
