The College at Southwestern trains students to “Know Truth, Defend Truth, and Share Truth.” Our students are prepared to engage cultural issues with the truth they know, share truth with those who are searching, and defend truth against skeptical attacks with robust critical thinking. It’s the kind of thinking that changes the world.

Come to the College at Southwestern to discover a truth worth knowing, a truth worth defending and a truth worth sharing.

Welcome!

Thank you for joining us for our Sixth Annual Regional Home School College Night! This is the only regional college event in Texas specifically designed for homeschool-ers by homeschoolers, and we are so glad you’re here!

We are excited to be able to host an event that brings home school families and college representatives together in one place! We hope that you will gain much from this informative evening.

Please take your time browsing the exhibit hall. Use this opportunity to meet the recruiters from the colleges that you are most interested in learning about, and then visit with others to see what they have to offer. It is wise to have several prospective colleges in mind that you are interested in attending, and not set your sights on just one or two.

Because home schools in Texas are considered private schools, your requirements for graduation might differ from what various colleges require for their incoming Freshmen. Therefore, it is very important for homeschooling parents to start reviewing colleges well ahead of graduation to make sure that their students will have the minimum number of courses/credits that their colleges of choice require for admission. It is important to note that each college has its own set of requirements, so it is best to compare the course requirements from various colleges that interest you most, and use that as a guide for planning your high school coursework.

We encourage you to talk with the recruiters and ask them all the questions you might have regarding their requirements for incoming Freshmen, financial aid, schol-arships, etc.

We ask the Lord’s blessing over the evening and over every family represented, each college, recruiter, speaker, and volunteer. We pray that you will go home encouraged and equipped with the information you need to get you started planning your next steps toward graduation and beyond.

Thank you for helping to make tonight a success!

Blessings,

The HEART of Texas [email protected]

Speaking Session Descriptions

College 101: Q&A Panel with Public/Private College RepresentativesRepresentatives from Dallas Baptist University, Mary Hardin Baylor, University of North Texas, and Texas A&M Commerce and Moderator

This is your chance to have your questions answered by a panel of representatives from both public and private colleges and universities.

“Straight Talk About College”Dave Novotny - CollegePlus!

Many students go to college and end up buried in debt, take too much time to earn their degree, and are still unsure of their purpose in life when they graduate. Your student can obtain a fully accredited degree, with no debt, in less than four years, and graduate certain of their life purpose - prepared and trained to enter the next stage of their life journey. Find out how.

“How to Fund College”Taryn Anderson - Director of Financial Aid, University of Dallas

The big question in the minds of many home school families is: How can we afford to send our child to college? What are the options for a child who isn’t a National Merit Scholar? What about a family with more than one child in college? What kind of help is available, and how can you access it? Taryn Anderson, Director of Financial Aid at University of Dallas, will help guide you through the maze of college financing options. She will explain the difference between grants, scholarships, and loans, and schools determine who is eligible for financial aid.

“Opportunity of a Lifetime - How Do I Attend One of the U.S. Service Academies?”Representatives from the 5 Service Academies & Congressional Offices

High school and middle school students and their parents can learn more about the first-class education available at our country’s service academies. Meet representatives from each of the 5 service academies, who will discuss the requirements for admission as well as the appointment process. A brief DVD highlighting each academy will be shown, and the session will conclude with a question and answer period. Homeschoolers interested in military affairs, defense, leadership, or public service are encouraged to attend!

Speaking Session Descriptions

“Don’t Count on a Christian College to Get a Biblical Worldview”Dr. Marlene McMillan

Young people are leaving the faith at alarming rates including those attending Christian Colleges. Why? The Colleges believe they are doing the best job they can. Parents are trying but the culture is promoting an anti-Christian bias and most young people are ill-prepared for what they will face. The fact that we are losing our young people means that our best has not been good enough and it is time for a course correction. If you don’t have a firm foundation of Biblical thinking and reasoning at home, you should not expect to get it elsewhere. You cannot convey what you do not have. Come learn what a Biblical worldview is and how one is established from Dr. Marlene McMillan, homeschool pioneer, mother of seven who has taught how what the Bible says about Law, Government, History, Economics and Education applies to daily life in Study Groups for over 20 years and now through her books, audios and International teaching.

“Free College at Your Fingertips”Jean Burk - College Prep Genius

Are you ready to make $500 an hour? Although it sounds too good to be true, it’s possible to earn this much in scholarships for college. Author, Jean Burk, will teach you two important concepts: how to get into the college of your choice and how to find the scholarships to pay for it. You will learn methods of receiving substantial scholarships that go beyond tuition and may include room and board, graduate school, and money to study abroad! Unlock the keys to finding free college at your fingertips!

“Choosing the Right Major”Jason Hale - Texas Tech University

With so many options how there, how do you know what major to choose in college? Understanding that a college degree is important, this session will walk you through the process of choosing a major that is right for you! Undecided about what to major in? Don’t worry, most students are. Hear about tools that you can use to narrow down your choice.

“Better Together: Education & Ministry”Brian Downey - The King’s University at Gateway

You don’t have to choose between your faith and your education. Come hear a dynamic presentation that makes the case for choosing both an excellent education and an opportunity to use your gifts to minister to those around you.

In order to see, they had to cover their eyes.

In a poverty stricken country with a 40% unemployment rate, poor

eyesight isn’t just a problem, it’s a life threatening condition. Without

money for glasses, many vision-impaired Kenyans can’t find work, and

no work means no food. So when a group of Baylor students and

professors travelled to the Nyakach Plateau on a medical mission, they

came bearing adjustable eyeglasses. Glasses that allowed villagers,

both nearsighted and far, to see their way to a brighter future.
