UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA Top-ranked Oklahoma won its fifth consecu- tive conference title Saturday night, placing first at the 2016 MPSF Conference Champi- onship in Palo Alto, Calif., with a team score of 448.050. Stanford was 2nd with 444.65, California 3rd at 435.55 and Air Force 4th with 429.20 In addition to the team title, three Sooners claimed individual conference champion- ships, with junior Allan Bower winning the all-around (90.100), senior Kanji Oyama claiming his third straight vault title (15.400) and freshman Yul Moldauer taking parallel bars (16.100). The Sooners started the night on floor led by a 15.500 from junior Colin Van Wicklen. Sophomore Hunter Justus also topped the 15- point mark, scoring 15.200 in the leadoff po- sition, while Oyama and Moldauer both con- tributed 14.750s. OU moved to pommel horse and Bower paced the Sooners with a 15.050. Oklahoma also got a 14.550 from senior Sergey Resnick and a 14.400 from Moldauer. At the end of the second rotation, OU faced something it hadn’t seen all year; the Sooners sat in third place and trailed first by 2.500 points. Competing on rings, OU turned in a team score of 75.900 to eat into the Cardinal lead. Justus paced the Sooners, turning in a career- best 15.500. Thao Hoang (15.450), Oyama (15.100) and junior Reese Rickett (15.000). On to vault Oyama set the tone for the rota- tion with a stuck landing and a 15.400. Bower turned in a 15.300 and Van Wicklen added a 15.050 of his own. Senior Josh Yee led off the set with a 14.950. If the Sooners were heating up in rotations three and four, they were fully on fire in the fifth. On parallel bars all five OU competitors scored at least 14.900 en route to an NCAA- record 77.000. Moldauer led the way with a career-best 16.100 that marked the nation’s highest score of the year on the event. OU also saw a 15.600 from Bower, a career-best 15.350 from Oyama and a 15.050 from Justus. After their p-bars explosion, the Sooners had vaulted into the lead by more than two full points. OU finished on high bar as Freshman Levi Anderson paced OU with a 15.050. Moldauer and Van Wicklen also turned in solid routines with a 14.950 and 14.850, respectively. STANFORD UNIVERSITY Despite holding onto the lead through the first four events, No. 2 Stanford was unable to hold on as No. 1 Oklahoma claimed their fifth straight MPSF title Saturday afternoon at Burnham Pavilion. On vault Robert Neff and Grant Brecken- ridge both posted scores just shy of their ca- reer bests. Taylor Seaton led the Cardinal with a 15.200. The Cardinal stepped up to the parallel bars led by Akash Modi with a 15.450 followed up with Dennis Zaremski’s 15.400 and Brian Knott’s 15.000. As a team, Stanford posted a 75.450 for its second-best score of the season to lead the meet by 2.700 after two events. Heading to the high bar Grant Breckenridge led off the event for the Cardinal, only to post the best score of the day in the event as well as career-best score of 15.250. Taylor Seaton also stepped up to post a career-best 15.150 while taking second in the event on the day. Headed to floor next, Akash Modi led the day with a 15.650 score that helped propel the Cardinal, though Oklahoma claimed the team event with the second and third best scores on the day. Jacob Barrus’ career-best 15.050 helped send the Cardinal to a 1.000 lead after four results. The turning point on the day came when Oklahoma set an NCAA team record of 77.000 on parallel bars in the next event, top- ping the former record of 76.900 held by Stanford on February 6, 2016. The Cardinal posted a 71.700 on pommel horse in the rota- tion, but the damage was done as the Sooners took a 4.300 lead headed into the final event. The Cardinal moved to the rings in the final event of the meet where Dennis Zaremski posted a 15.550 to win the event on the day while Akash Modi put up a season-best 14.800. The effort wasn’t enough though as the Sooners finished the meet with a 448.050 team score to Stanford’s 444.650 and clinch their fifth straight MPSF title. In the all-around Akash Modi took second place in the meet with a 89.800 overall score. The meet is the first NCAA meet of the year that Modi has not taken home the all-around title in.
